1000 user survey finds Windows Phone 7 UI second only to the iPhone

imageThe Windows Phone 7 user interface is pretty special, featuring a beautifully minimal design devoid of the clutter seen in other mobile operating systems.

Now, according the John Best, chief technology officer for Wescom Resources Group, a wholly owned CUSO of the Pasadena, Calif.-based, $3 billion Wescom Credit Union and a provider of mobile banking solutions, the Windows Phone 7 UI is the second most popular user interface after iPhone.

The Windows Phone Metro User Interface has recently won a patent protecting the elements of its design, increasingly copied by companies like Google in their various properties.

The survey was from a recent test of 1,000 mobile banking users performed by Wescom Resources Group.

The information is quoted in CUTimes article addressing the rise in Mobile Banking, an area increasingly important for credit unions and an area in which Windows Phone 7 is relatively under-served.

I wonder how many of those 1000 ppl have actually used the Windows Phone. I bet not all of them (by far!). Which makes this survey useless.

    • rsgx

      Agreed

It says test in the original article, which to me implies more of a focus group than a survey

Yep, a test – I would have to beleive everyone was given hands on time with each of the phones.

Most people using smartphones know what the iPhone UI looks like and how it works. The same cannot be said for WP7.

Hell, even WebOS is even more intuitive than the iPhone.

iphone has been around for 4 years

        wp7 1 year

everyone knows what an iphone looks like. noone knows wp7

I have the Bank of America App on my Win Phone 7 and it is a very
thought out, very clean app.  It allows you to check balances, make
transfers, pay bills, etc.  I rarely use the online service anymore.

      Great app.

Microsoft copies Google, most recently with Google lattitude. Most recently, they buy the PS3 with the black matte paint. It’s very syniskt to say thatsomeone copies. How did you learn to walk and talk?

    • Anonymous

funny how the original xbox didnt have black matte paint either. Oh wait..

    • http://www.about.me/AngeloGopaul Eingoluq

LOL. If you had said microsoft copied the playstation’s controller I might agree with you, but the matte black paint is such a trivial thing for an example, especially when the PS3 mimics the Xbox most of the time, but thats natural in competition. The matte black was a decision they made because of the community complaining about the shinny model.

Further more, dude, everything is relative… You can say microsoft copied google earth with virtual earth… but microsoft have been doing mapping way before google with TerraServer. So they copied them.

To me, this means that WP7 is first… beacause of the natural inflation the iPhone gets from *apple must win in design* mentality.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZWIQU6F5MNQWGAIOKNHSCSJFDE Brian

Actually, since according to the article this was a test and not just a survey I don’t think so. Also, even though the usability is good they apperently don’t think there is enough of a market to make a WP7 app – at least not yet.

      • http://twitter.com/brianchau Brian Chau

A grid of icons and nothing else is always going to be easier to use. The market really has been dumbed down!.

Exactly what I was going to say. Because of the intense media coverage of Apple products consumers think that Apple does everything best. Though the UI of iOS isn’t bad, it is icon-based and feels very dated, especially compared to WP7.

      • Anonymous

the ios ui isn dted and neither is it out-dated, itsd simply dead-dated…so so..appled-up..

As a former iPhone user and present Win Phone owner, I would describe the difference in UI as follows: iPhone is primitive, while Win Phone is simply clean. iPhone offers nothing but rows of static icons, Androids are too cluttered, BlackBerry is simply terrible, but Win Phone combines the best of iPhone (simplicity) and Android (customization and access to information without the need for opening apps).

    • rsgx

I used an iPhone for nearly 2 years prior to a WP7, same opinion is held here. Android I had for a couple days and it was shocking, like a 15 year old who just discovered Desktop X for Windows.

      • Anonymous

I’ve long held (since the purchase of my Android phone, over a year ago) that Android is merely the fulfilled expression of windows mobile! A carry-over of the initial wild-west mentality, with none of the necessary reflection of maturity. Things even Microsoft has recognized, and now shown in their WP7 platform!

        • http://www.facebook.com/richeymeister Mark Richey

That’s right! I was using Skins and home screen plugins on my WindowsMobile 4 years ago. Nothing new on Android.

lol…the UI is possibly THE best thing about WP7…far and away the best UI.

  • Doug Simmons

Lucky for you guys that the UI is so fabulous, given that you’re unable to use another. But why would you want to? Choice is overrated anyway..

True! I can eat whatever I want, from fastfood to gourmet, however, invariably, I’ll always eat what is put in from of me! LOL

To me the iPhone UI is really messy and old-fashioned.

The Metro UI is the only good thing in WP7, but it’s really good. The rest of the WP7 is only limitations and restrictions + over US-centric services and is out of interest.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sergey-Durnov/100000964100298 Sergey Durnov

Agree, for me, Metro UI was final argument in moving to WP7.

Dependant on your age (w/N.O) you will appreciate the saying “Rome wasn’t built in a day!” Yes, we may all desire that everything be available everywhere once its rolls out, but you should also appreciate the fact that they [Microsoft] are building the Foundation of  Windows Phone as they proceed, and also (in this age) respecting license holders IP as they move forward.
I mean we can all see where the use of shortcuts (in O.S building) leads; The house that Android built! LOL

      • Anonymous

actually since they stole IP its more like the house that andriod stole lol

iphone isnt even that great a UI. Its ok, but its too “constrained” to the small screen space. plus its boring based on a dock of buttons at the bottom

I love windows phone and everything that the brand encompasses, but as my contract expires I have decided to go the iphone route. i will undoubtedly get a wp one day, but as of now, microsoft has failed to compel me to do so. Basic necessities like Zune Pass aren’t even offered where I live (Canada). How can i possibly get a wp? im sorry, because i truely think its the best mobile os out there, but its just not mature enough for me quite yet. makes me sad.
