13 min video of the HTC Trophy/Mazaa running Mango

Eldar from Mobile-review.com have published this 13 min review of the device he calls the HTC Mazaa running Mango.

The video gives a good look at the speed of multi-tasking, the linked inbox feature and also Bing Vision searches.

Unfortunately its all in Russian, so we can not quite discern his opinions, but in the linked article he notes that he is generally positive about Mango, but rather that jumping ahead of other mobile operating systems he feels it is really only what the release version should have been, and that Windows Phone will take 5 years to catch up.  I think he is being a bit pessimistic :)

If he think it will take them five years to get competitive with iOS and Android he’s nuts. Theyve managed to do it in two years, and we still don’t know what the other 400ish new features are.

A few months ago, I was hell bent on replacing my Omnia 7 with the iPhone 5 in the near future because I was very unhappy with Microsoft’s slow as molasses approach in updating the OS, but I’m not so sure that will happen now. I’ve since managed able to install NoDo, and with the announcement of Mango last week with all its feature packed enhancements, and after seeing this video, WP7 is now turning out to be the OS I hoped it would be when I jumped on board last October.

I think 5 years is crazy. Both Android and iPhone’s upgrades over past few years have been fairly obvious things – nothing completely whacky. Tethering is the one issue for me. Get that into Mango and (alongside the other 499 features) you’re competitive. Honestly I think by the time Apollo rolls around with Windows Phone 8 they will be competitive. Mango is already feature complete, soon it will be code complete and moving into testing phase.

Joe Belfiore has already stated in the past (in a channel 9 interview sometime around MIX) that his team is already looking at the NEXT update that will happen next year. 12 months from now WP will be better than Android and iPhone.

By the time Mango ships, it will be better than both those platforms.

It will have the same integration and polish of iOS and better usability and features of both combined, save a few here and there.

He’s not pessimistic, he hates Nokia, so obviously Windows Phone will get some of that hate.

If you don’t know Eldar, ask Nokia fans about him.

Have to wonder how all these MS haters always manage to get their hands on MS products and the pro-MS sites dont even get an invite!

In this rewiev he says that Mango has many interesting features that he likes. He also shows some prototype bags – IE crash, formatting issues, lack of Flash support, but notes that IE works superfast.

I’ve said this a few times to all the WP haters on other sites etc when they keep bringing up that BS about MS being “late to the game” and “playing catchup” but i’ll say it yet again. It’s easyer to “catch up” than it is to “stay ahead”, people seem to think iOS and Android will keep innovating and adding loads of new things with each update but that’s total BS.

MS will catch up with the others with Mango and even be ahead in some areas, like with the new live tile system and IE9s GPU acceleration. Come 2012 all 3 platforms will be neck and neck when it comes to features, you can bet on it. MS will have the chance to come out with some more innovative stuff in WP8 and make iOS5 and Android 2.4/2.5 or w/e the hell it’ll be, look old.

Oh my God I never cease to be amazed at how angry MS can make me. This is an OS and a set of features that really starts to make itself stand out as a great platform on which great applications and services can be built and yet……..
They get one of the most important apps – the portal to most things – THE BROWSER SOOOOOO WRONG!

Can someone explain to MS that a browser needs to reflow text when you increase the size of the text ! People increase the font size through “pinch and stretch” and “double tap” actions to make reading easier NOT HARDER!

If you have to scroll across now as well as up and down you have just made the experience fall back in functionality by upto 3 years!!!!

MS I want to buy your phone but do you really need to be told this stuff !????

I just wonder if you miss such a basic feature then I am concerned about investing and seeing other basic errors like this. Using Opera mobile on WM 6.5 gets this right so how is it that you can’t learn from your competitors?

    • Anonymous

I used to think as you do and was very concerned that I’d miss text reflow when I made the jump from my HD2 to an Omnia 7. However, I haven’t missed text reflow once since switching and actually found it incredibly annoying when I recently had to use my HD2 for a month.

Pinch zooming in WP7 is just so good and so smooth that there’s really no need for text reflow. IE is also a lot faster than Opera Mobile and one of the main reasons for that is that it doesn’t have to constantly work to reformat the screen as the size of the font changes.

    • Monkey D Black

um, I think opera or HTC holds the patents to that. Not Microsoft. and it wouldn’t be advisable for them to just infringe on someone else’s patent. and their mobile and devices division does not have that much money to be licensing patents from other people that can wait

  • AS147

It looks like they make the same reflow of text error in book reading as well !
Would it be so hard to reflow the text of a book so that the text doesn’t fall off the end of the screen ? It looks like some school kid programmed this piece and doesn’t do the OS justice.

  • AS147

Very slick and VERY fast – excellent and even though there are not many PDA platforms out there that support Adobe flash out of the box is there no chance that MS could further differentiate itself by providing this also. I suspect it would be a big selling point. I realise flash is a resource hog but with the specs of PDA’s today can that still be the reason?

  • http://fxfp.com/ Alex F.

He’s surprisingly positive in that video – but also cannot help but rant about missing Flash support ;-)

  • zzz

5 years to catch up in what? It is not being too pessimistic if you are talking about market share in terms of sales or user base. In terms of OS features and overall usability, Mango puts WP7 on top this year.

Putting aside what WP can’t do for a moment, give me a call when iOS or Android can do what WP can do today.

things i learned from the video:
    1. unlike others who know eldar hates nokia or wp7, i dont understand a singleword he said.
    2. OS is much more smoother and impressively faster and fluid.
    3. IE9 is damn fast…fast enough to make other browsers shit on there respective users :)
    4. The OS is obviously ready, as it is available to people outside “microsoft comfort zone”
    5. The device looks sexy.
    6. If he can have it on his device, why not me…I have paid for the OS, I need it now ans so does a few million people who actually love and showed there support to microsoft.
    7. I love the way this whole thing is shaping up except, carriers in India have data caps as low as 2GB per month, so I am not sure if I can use the OS t its full capacity as does other people.
    8. If the OS is so much baked, why can’t people who have carrier free devices not getting the updates, what is stopping microsoft from sending them the updates?

People and mod if you agree with me, please do something…..the old giant needs to wake up

Actually, Mango is quite buggy at the moment. Bing Vision crashed on me a few time for instance.
