30 Windows Phones in Q3 2010? Must be Windows Phone 7!

The Strange Steve Ballmer quotes are coming out of India thick and fast. The latest, reported by Techtickerblog, is from a presentation by Steve Ballmer at the Microsoft IndiMix 2010 conference where he showed a slide claiming 50 Windows Mobile smartphones in 2009, and a full 30 coming in Q3 2010.

30 smartphones so close to the end of the year can only suggest the launch of Windows Phone 7 in the quarter, which is certainly much earlier than we expect. On the other hand, Steve did say he was going to accelerate things…

Anyone with a link to a video of the keynote would be much appreciated.

What a fiasco, and a farce!!!!

Anybody who thinks Ballmer is unfit to lead Microsoft now has their proof.

Ballmer quoted the wrong figure. He quoted Windows Mobile combined with Windows Phone 7. Wouldn't you expect that Ballmer would know how many Windows Phone 7 units MS expects to sell? Nope.

Yes. So you've got to calculate the expected decline of Windows Mobile, then subtract that figure from 30 million, and you get the expected number of Windows Phone 7 handsets.

Keep in mind that Windows Mobile has been holding steady in unit sales (it just declines as a percentage of the total growing smartphone market). Then you get a very low figure of expected WP7 sales.

But why didn't Ballmer not know? He should have those numbers in the top of his head.

My friend, who's quite close to the WP7 launch, has hinted at a moved up timetable for launch. Seems like Steve is starting to let the cat out of the bag.

Keep in mind how they measure what a "phone" is. Touch Pro 2 (Sprint), Touch Pro 2 (verizon), Touch Pro 2 (unlocked), touch pro 2 (t-mobile), tilt 2 (at&t) constitute 5 phones when we all know its just 1 made to work on different carriers. So that might mean there are only 6 phones coming out with 5 different models each.

The ONLY reason Windows phone OS is in decline, is because EVERYONE who gives a crap about having a great product for which they can CHOOSE, whatever carrier and whatever phone hardware they wish, is waiting for WPH7. It makes perfect sense actually. An early launch would be just the kind of stimulus that MS needs. Anyone predicting that WinPh7 will be failure, hasn't seen it or is totally blind, dumb, or pure Apple fanboy. Keep the blinders on, because the sleeping giant has awakened. I hope this rumor is true.
