44% of current and prospective US smartphone owners considering Windows Phone 7

imagePress Release: According to Connected Intelligence, a service from The NPD Group that analyses the confluence of connected devices, access, and content, Android is the preferred operating system (OS) among current smartphone owners and those who intend to buy a new smartphone in the next six months. Android not only generates more interest than any other OS (63 percent), but it is also the platform consumers were “most interested in” (36 percent).

“The Android juggernaut continues, and that’s not great news for some of their OS competitors,” said Linda Barrabee, research director for Connected Intelligence. “For example, one-third of BlackBerry smartphone owners are most interested in Android for their next smartphone purchase. That said, Android is also experiencing continued competition from Apple’s popular iPhone, as well as some nascent competition from Windows Phone 7.”

According to Connected Intelligence’s “Android: Variation and Value-Add” report, Android market momentum is unquestionable — comprising at least half of all smartphone purchases for the past three quarters; however, Android’s continued market dominance is in no way guaranteed. In fact, 44 percent of smartphone owners, and those who intend to buy one, are considering purchasing a Windows Phone 7 (WP7) device.

Even so, there are a number of hurdles. For example, 45 percent of consumers are still not aware of Windows Phone 7. Furthermore among the 50 percent of consumers who plan to purchase a smartphone in the next six months, but who are not interested in Windows Phone 7, the most popular reason given also centered on lack of awareness (i.e., 46 percent felt they “don’t know enough about it”). The second most offered reason was OS ecosystem lock-in (i.e., 21 percent said they have “too much time or money invested in another smartphone OS.”)

“Windows Phone 7 has a way to go before consumers really understand what it is,” Barrabee said. “But with the right marketing mojo, apps portfolio, and feature-rich hardware, Microsoft could certainly improve its standing and chip away at Android’s dominant market position.”

I think 80% don’t know what live tiles are good for….almost everyone who doesn’t consider WP7 at all have never played with it.

Friends of mine think they’re just bigger icons and likened it to those telephones with huge buttons.  One has bitten of the poison apple and the other is a robosexual.  As you can imagine, we have nice discussions …

Well, they are correct to certain degrees that tiles are just “icons” that launches the respective apps, ain’t they? But is just that tiles are also capable to show information beside just a “dead” icon.

man I’ve had a Sister and 4 friends need knew phones in the past 6 months.  I tried to convince all of them to give WP a try.  My Sister went EVO 3D andother Friend went EVO 3D another friend went EVO Classic, 1 Friend iPhone and the last is definitley getting a Windows Phone just as soon as one with a KB comes to Verizon.  I’m not pushy with it just say show/tell them what features WP7 has.

Well it’s a fact that when I pull out my Omnia 7 everyone are staring and asking me WTF is that? Android? That’s the cold truth :( but when I lend my phone to some one for a minute … that person is converted for life :D 3 of my closest friends are waiting for Nokia to show up in BG and that’s it :) so good marketing should do the trick ;)

The sad thing is most people are just followers…they hate to think, they hate to make decisions, they hate to fall out of line, they hate to invent, they hate to change, they hate to disagree, they hate to prove something, they hate the feel to deliver…

most people I have seen reject WP7 are those who feel like they probably can’t justify their decision within their group of friends where everyone has either an iPhone or a Dumbdroid…and everyone is pushing everyone else to get the same phone to be able to use the same apps and do the same things…

Last but not least, Microsoft’s name isn’t exactly appealing to yound lads either…Apple is the coolest thing the world has ever seen with amazing features. Apple has invented the mp3 player with the iPod, iCloud will bring a totally new technology to earth, iPad is the modern PC, iMessage is the first IM,  etc. etc…

Microsoft has been a company that has always decided to go substance over flash. They have never put their main resources in eye candy but rather in functionality. Thats cool as long as you UNDERSTAND those functionalities and extensions and compatibilities etc. Most people take Windows and Office for granted and don’t even realize that Microsoft is there. If they knew the XBox franchise is from Microsoft, they probably would have never bought it in the first place. Its cool to have Apple products but more disturbing…its cool to hate Microsoft, the evil empire (so they say).

sad, sad world where superficiality prevails…

Not really true. I had a Omnia 7, and I switched to SGS 2. Why? Because Android is indeed much more powerful than the current WP7. Not a fan boy, but is facts. The current WP7 can’t even do Whatsapp until Mango, and that’s only the tip of the ice berg of what WP7 can’t do as compared to other rival OSes out there.

“45 percent of consumers are still not aware of Windows Phone 7″ ….. That’s because 90% of the sales people in the stores keep pushing Android…no surprise there.
