Desktop Marketplace for Windows Mobile goes live, WM 6.0, 6.1 client coming soon
It seems Phase 2 of Marketplace for Windows Mobile is on us, with the he Windows Mobile Developer Blog announcing:
Starting today, Windows phone customers can browse, buy and download applications online at the Windows Marketplace for Mobile site. The selected applications are delivered wirelessly to the customer’s Windows phone and install the next time the Windows Marketplace client runs on the device. This creates another way for customers to easily find and purchase applications and gives developers a whole new level of exposure.
The website can be found at marketplace.windowsphone.com and allows one to buy apps which are then downloaded over the air next time you run Marketplace. No side-loading is allowed yet.
The update also brings the next level of security for apps which allows apps to be tied to hardware.
Some time later this month Marketplace will also be extended to Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1. At present there is also no evidence of the ability to switch to Marketplaces from other countries.

wmpoweruser dude, plz check Skyfire browser with HD2 I wanna see How's work
[Reply]
I can see "Select Catalog" drop down which lists all the countries and allowed me to switch between countries. I'm staying in Singapore and able to browse contents from various other countries. Number of applications are also increasing.

can you download/buy the apps of the other regions? if that works then i guess a marketplace app update might be available soon.
[Reply]
This sucks, it imposes the same region limitations as the mobile version of Marketplace.
Dumb… take your Marketplace and shove it Microsoft. You'd have been better of not creating an app store, this way you're just inviting criticism.
And when are we going to see some new and useful stuff added? For the last two months the same freaking four apps are being 'showcased'.

Did you check "Select Catalog"? You can switch region. Why you people are always providing wrong information about Microsoft?

What you are describing is nowhere to be found… and don't make generalization, you have no idea who I am and whether or not I distribute false info about Microsoft.
There's no way to select a catalog, there's no way to trick it by changing the country in your LiveID profile. You can get it to show you all the apps on the desktop version, but you can't fool the mobile client into downloading them if they're not availalble in your locale.
I'm not providing wrong information – there's been countless negative reviews of the Marketplace, even in reviews that were positive on WM6.5 as a whole – go find me a single review that praises the Marketplace and then I'll concede.

It's not there… this isn't the best laid out site but I've looked thoroughly and it's just not there.
Please stop pushing the issue, Marketplace is a turd as it is stands.

Jos… It looks like you have not looked into it deep. "Select Catalog" EXISTS and even I'm able to switch the catalog after sign in. Since I'm using a phone with version 6.1 I couldn't test it.
Can some one test it and let everyone know about it.

Well, I'm afraid I see no such thing – this is in Canada and I'm logged into my LiveID and I positively see no such thing in any of the corners.
Whatever, I've basically given up on Marketplace. I just fired it up right now and it says there's a new update that I have to download or quit the program, except the download fails at about 70% every single time. Nice, huh?

It looks like you are using marketplace from your hand phone. This thread is for "Desktop Marketplace for Windows Mobile". Not for mobile marketplace.

this doesn't seem to be what Arunagiri GT is facing, he can select different catalogs. also have you tried to change your location from inside your live ID details? maybe it's using that to choose your location, or you can look for that "select catalog" drop down list on the page.

I just took another look on the website and low and behold there goes the "select Catalog" at the bottom right. how daft are you to look around the page and understand how it works? I take it you're the type to not read manuals

Lennard, relax.
I saw the ’select catalog’ link at the bottom right. I was able to use it and browse the US version of the Marketplace. Apps everywhere. Everything seemed fine.
Then I was asked to log in with my Windows Live account. Wham: back to my local Marketplace and its six apps. See post nr.5 below. The ’select catalog’ menu disappears when you’re logged in, did you notice that?
O, I tried. I tried to trick the Marketplace. I signed out again, so the ’select catalog’ link came back; I changed the region, tried to buy an app from the US store, then had to log in again of course. After which the buying process just crashed.
I take it you’re the type to not test something to the very end before you shout ‘hey, it works!’.

I could use the 'select catalog' menu when I first visited the Marketplace, but now that I've logged in, it's gone… and I'm stuck with my local marketplace and its six (6!) apps again. Bummer.

I'm able to see "Select Catalog" dropdown even after "Sign in".
[Reply]
wow…their website sucks. The "links" aren't actually links (so it makes looking at multiple apps not easy as I can't open in new tab). Also, there is no way to search by price. When you view an application, it doesn't always take you back to the page you were on before (the same "results" page…you may be back at the top of the results). Then again, MS has always been horrible at website design.

could by any chance give us an example of a "link" that is not a "link" on the website please? because I want to see it.
and Iike the minimalist design and also the fact that it borrows it's layout from the zune software/team

well the design is neat, but that thing about the links is bugging me aswell.
if they 'fixed' that then it would be a great site.

I'm still asking, which links on the site are not real links? I'm using IE8 and every link that looks like a link are actually a link. I haven't seen one link that looks like a link that isn't a link.
so where should I look? on the site?

the 'links' to the individual app. Like when you hover over an app there's a box surrounding it, when you click it it goes to the page about the particular app, but you can't open it up in a seperate tab (using scrollwheel/middle mouse button).

ok, now I understand, but I've met a number of websites (can't remember them off the top of my head right now) that doesn't allow you to open the links in seperate tabs.
So how the hell I am able to actually download anything from there????!!!!!!
Competely dumb retard has "designed" this crap.
I find myspace app for free but there's NO WAY to get it!!!

are you logged in? also did you read that it only downloads from your phone (you have to open up the marketplace app, then it will download it)?
[Reply]
Guys I'm not an idiot.
I visit http://www.marketplace.windowsphone.com
Search for myspace app, open it and there's no fucking way to set it to dwonload or do
ANYTHING with that. No link, no option. Just an app description.
Of course I visit it from the PHONE and I'm logged IN.
Dumb retards design these things. Idiots!!!!!!!

You're right, it took me a while to figure out how to get stuff from that site and no matter what some might want to believe I'm not some techno-noob.
It took me a few minutes but I figured it out. You have to sign in both on the desktop client and the mobile client… of course once you punch in your username it will revert your crappy local marketplace.

You're not supposed to visit that site from the phone… That site is made for desktop use, why would you want to go to that site instead of downloading apps from the marketplace app?

Readers please try this link and not the one mentioned by doministry.

Well mr intelligent
so help here how to download anything!
I don't have marketplace app, I use WM 6.1.
[Reply]
this is why I said to read the article next time, it's not out for WM6.1 yet, at the moment it's only for WM6.5. it will be coming to 6.1 soon though. that bit of information is even in the title of the article. I hope you start reading the articles first before you post or try out something from the article post.

Ok. I will explain again:
there is a website with the above website.
Whether I enter this from the phone or a desktop,
I get all the content displayed exept the download link.
They even display an email of developer/person..
So in this context it's all confusing. And not functional.
Even when the app is free! That is my point.

"No side-loading is allowed yet."
You can browse and purchase apps on the web portal, but you can only download them on device (this is an attempt to stop piracy as most of the CAB files aren't protected at all!)

No one is doing WM apps anymore because no one buys WM apps anymore. Catch-22.
