Office Mobile 2010 coming to Windows Mobile 6.5
It seems Office Mobile 2010 will be coming to Windows Mobile 6.5 as an update at some point.
The FAQ for Office 2010 Beta makes reference to a mobile version of the software which will be compatible with the file formats used by the new office suite.
Of note is that the FAQ says that Windows Mobile 6.5 will be exclusively supported, meaning Windows Mobile 6.1 will not receive the update.

It shouldnt. This should be made to work only with WM7. They should be writing their in house apps to match the look and feel of WM7, not this outdated stopgap/atrocity that is 6.5

I'm quite sure that they would be able to port the WM6.5 version to WM7 in order to take advantage of WM7's new improvements.
Or… maybe not… considering that the flick to scroll in WM6.5 works in some Microsoft apps like File Explorer but not others like My Phone's settings page. And how they sometimes have soft key menus with one option in them… and how when on the lock screen the phone ringing screen is different from your device is unlocked…
Microsoft lacks consistency and UI planning… I hope Office Mobile 2010 will actually support all the new features in Office 2010 (as seen in the tech preview), but I somehow really really doubt that. I mean… right now, I can't even edit powerpoints on my phone?!

That's such a weird one, isn't it? You have to wonder if they do any sort of pre-planning over in Redmond. In case you didn't know though, you can use a program like Chobit's SmartLock so your phone locks before ringing, so you always get the nice slider call screen even if your device is unlocked.

See, what makes it even more troubling is that Microsoft has no problems doing good UIs – look at Windows 7 and the ZuneHD, even the Xbox interface has always looked more slick than the Playstation's IMO. For whatever reason they just didn't/don't give a crap about Windows Mobile, but they can do good and coherent UIs if they want to do so, which I think is the only reason people are still waiting for the overdue WM7

Hopefully they'll finally introduce decent Word/Excel/PPT rendering in OM 2010, along with a functional IMAP client.
As it stands, the iPhone has a vastly more useful viewer for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF than WM. Content creation, which is supposedly WM's strength, is pretty much useless (formatting goes to hell– and if I can't generate a final-output document on the phone that I can send to someone, then why not just use a note to store plain-text… which one could do on an iPhone too).

SoftMaker Office costs $80. Compare that to $0 for the iPhone's built-in viewers, and $9 for QuickOffice Mobile, which lets you do document/spreadsheet/etc. editing and creation on the iPhone (and with a much smoother UI than SoftMaker (which can't really work without a stylus, even on a huge screen), at that).
