Besides working on Windows Mobile 7, some portion of Microsoft’s mobile engineers are continuing to work on Windows Mobile 6.5, brining it up to date with technologies like capacitive screens and making the UI more palatable to this generation of smartphone users.

The latest build is build 28002, which has been dubbed Windows Mobile 6.5.3 (yes, I don’t know what happened to 6.5.2 either).  Its not clear what has changed, but as usual the UI again shows some more polish, especially in the controls, as can be seen in the clock alarm setting screen.  It is also reported to be faster than before, which is always a welcome change.

Read more about this build in this XDA-Developers thread, and some more information on the build numbering scheme at FuzeMobility here.

Thanks DavidK for the tip.

    Correct. Sorry, fixed.

  • Still looks like a draft! I actually prefer 6.5 to this unbalanced mess. But if they try changing all the elements including text boxes, bakcground, etc; this could be really good!

I can't understand why they keep those ugly freaking buttons. The indented "square" ones was a thousand times better, and even the plain text was better looking.

Either these aren't final and they'll look great when it's released or you'll be able to install a skin to make it look good. I'm not too worried about sinkable items. It's the poor layout of the settings that worries me.

The indented square ones are a skin, not the MS default.

    Oh, I see, that's good.

  • Do we have an official release date yet? I've heard it'll be out early next year but i don't know the source. If it's true then they don't have very long to finish it.

yeah, so I've heard too and I think it's going to be on time becauser MSFT seems to be on time since lately. I wish my phone was working so I could give this a run…..

Woohoo looking forward to flashing my TouchPro with the new release of TAEL Rom ;)
I think Microsoft focuses on the MSM7xxx chipsets which are – unfortunately – widely used. Many users noticed a speed improvement with those 23xxx builds (I did too with 23420).

As always I hope somebody from the WinMo-team reads this, here are a few suggestions:
-More unified settings. The new bar that replaces the tabs is really well suited for this, plus one can use gestures. So for me it wouldn´t be a problem to have multiple settings-pages to flick through. Just keep the "personal", "system" and "connections" for each of those collected pages.
-Better task-manager showing program-icons (please also for standard-apps like calendar, which normally don´t show an icon!) and also display a close-button for each app. I´m not too much into coding but a friend is, and I´m sure you could do this within one or two weeks (maximum). Yes, I know there are extremely few people working on 6.5
-Marketplace: Add alternative payment options. Especially micropayment (where you call a number which costs you a certain amount of money) would be perfectly suited for small amounts of money (many things I want to buy are just 2.99 or 0.99 – but I can´t pay, I don´t have a frakin credit card and I won´t get me one. And there are a lot of people thinking like me, really)
-Refresh the look of the messaging-app a bit! It looks so freaking old…. :(

Except from those points I love the improvements being made :)

The Touch Pro is one of the main WM6.5 development devices.

The lack of icon in task-manager isn't task managers fault, it's the application lacking an icon (yes, the lnks have one, but the exe doesn't).
