Rumour: HTC HD2 to get official Windows Mobile 7 update?
The rumour is unsourced, but MSMobiles claim to have received information which not just suggests but confirms that HTC will be releasing an official Windows Mobile 7 upgrade for the HTC HD2, which will apparently be announced as soon as Microsoft officially announces Windows Mobile 7, likely at Mobile World Congress in February 2010.
While we know the HD2 matches the Chassis 1 specs rumoured to be the minimum spec for Windows Mobile 7, HTC’s refusal to release a Windows Mobile 6.5 update for the HTC Touch HD, which easily matches the Windows Mobile 6.5 specs, would, I am sure, significantly reduce our readers confidence in this possibility.
On the other hand HTC may very well need to do this, if they intend to continue selling a Windows Mobile 6.5 device after Windows Mobile 7 is announced.

The HD2 may well have some WM7 development done on it (like the Touch Pro, HTC Wizard, HD etc) but I'm sceptical as to whether it will get WM7.

praying night and day for that to happen

Why don't HTC simply charge for an update? I'm sure that most HD2 owners would be prepared to pay for WM7 when it finally comes out and HTC could make a profit on it after they've paid off all the development that they'd have to do.

I suspect HTC will make more money out of a new device than they will out of releasing WM7 for an old one…
I also have a feeling that HD2 owners will get WM7 through XDA (and I'll try my best to get it!

that'll be good… but an official ROM cooked specifically for HD2 will always be more stable than the ones extracted from other devices.

Not going to happen. they are only showing it in feb, it wont get released till oct 2010 or later, by that time there will be a HD3 being released.

I agree with Ganondolf. If HTC HD2 is "HTC Star" (from 2009 lineup), they won't be updating HD2 to WinMo7 since it could be released in HTC Superstar. Obviously this is my opinion and I'm not basing it on any facts.
Peace

For the Touch HD:
HTC Exec: Will not having a WM 6.5 upgrade path cost us many Touch HD sales?
HTC Marketing: Probably not
HTC Exec: Then sod them
For Touch HD2:
HTC Exec: Will not having a WM 7 upgrade path cost us many Touch HD2 sales?
HTC Marketing: Probably
HTC Exec: Then we'd better give them one
As a Touch HD owner it's pretty irrelevant to me whether HTC offer an official WM 6.5 upgrade as I wouldn't use one of their ROMs anyway.
For Touch HD2 users I think the key point is whether the HD2 is capable of running WM7 properly, i.e. with full driver support.
