Bell’s Samsung Omnia 2 unboxed

Howard Chui from Howard Forums have published this brief video overview of the Samsung Omnia 2, currently available on Bell’s HSDPA network, and which will soon arrive on Verizon.

While the device appears to be very functional Howard does have a point regarding confusing navigation on the device, and it is slower than the 800 Mhz processor would suggest (for reference the HD2 loads the speed test page in 15 seconds).

Like all Samsung devices however the Samsung Omnia 2 is loaded with great included software and hardware which for many will more than make up for a little bit of lag here and there.

Do any of our readers have an Omnia 2?  Let us know your impressions in the comments below.

"and it is slower than the 800 Mhz processor would suggest (for reference the HD2 loads the speed test page in 15 seconds)"

Utter nonsense. Compare it's 800 Mhz to the older HTC's 533 Mhz and you will definitely see the speed difference there, actually it seems much faster than only +- 1.5 times of the older HTC's (by "older", I mean Touch Pro 2). Yes compared to the HD2, it is more than 20% slower than you would expect from the Mhz's, but this is an unfair comparison.

While comparing it with a TP2 would be fair because it uses the same architecture, comparing it to the HD2 would be like comparing a CoreXDuo to an i7, purely on the Mhz number. It just does not work that way.

It's not for no reason they call one architecture ARMv6 and the other ARMv7 :)

  • I don't own neither of this devices, so this is just my opinion based on the many videos available.
When I'm ready to buy that's the only thing I have to choose a phone.
And I have say that the HD2 wins over the Omnia 2 hands down.

Oh sure, I'd pick HD2 over Omnia II at the moment as well. It's just that particular statement that's complete nonsense, and more importantly, a reviewer should definitely know better.

This touchwiz crud look's even more ridiculously slow on 6.5 than it did on the original 6.1 version's,it's pretty snappy with the eye candy disabled on 6.1 from what I saw….just as well we have choice with WM.

Of course it's not going to beat any HD2 snapdragon in speed, but it has it's own good point's, OLED resistive screen and stylus input, better than HTC camera, the audio adaptor with mic they give you with it is a great bit of attention to detail that's very useful for some.
It's a pity they had to go and get d-pad fan's hope's up by putting a useless single function button that look's like a d-pad, but is there to basically only fit in with their excruciatingly poor performing eye candy interface.
Personally I would buy this over an HD2 anyday, it's a nice model that could have been a great one except for a couple of omission's that would have expanded it's versatility for more user's, plus for the price, it should have a new gen cpu.
