US Cellular HTC Touch Pro 2 ship without Opera Mobile?

US Cellular has just released their version of the HTC Touch Pro 2, and appears to have some significant differences compared to the versions released on the other carriers.

Vid Review and Tutorials have published this short video showing the important differences above.

Of course we do not have the device ourselves to verify it does in fact ship without Opera Mobile, but if true this would be a significant omission, as even the new version of Pocket IE is still significantly slower than Opera Mobile on older generation hardware.

Do you have a US Cellular HTC Touch Pro 2? Does it in fact ship without Opera Mobile?  Let us know in the comments below.

They probably pay less for it because they don't have to license Opera. You can find it on XDA though.

    a) Skyfire is miles better. I used to use both Skyfire and Opera Mobile, there's really no contest. Skyfire looks kind of ugly and it's annoying how sometimes you'll want to view a mobile version of a site and it'll take you to the normal desktop version – but it's much easier to browse IMO.
    b) You can download Opera to any WM phone from any variety of sites like XDA or MoDaCo.
    c) Even better, you can download the latest beta off Opera's website.

    d) Conclusion: Who cares, if someone is on US Cellular then they obviously have a good reason for doing so. The lack of a free program you can find anywhere is a non-issue.

Ultimately you are correct Jos, but it still ruins the out of the box experience. And a newcomer to Winmo probably would not know to download Opera or Skyfire. The most they *might* do is look for a mobile version of Firefox… And as far as Beta versions of Opera from Opera's website or the plethora of Opera mobile versions circulating XDA, unless you get the one made for your device, you'll be missing key usability features, like pinch to zoom on the HD2, or jog dial based zooming on newer HTC devices, or smotth optical joystick scrolling on the X1, etc.

Pfft, well if you buy a WM device expecting a good out of box experience you're going to be let down. Unless maybe if your device has the latest TF3D/Sense like the HD2, and even that's arguable.

At any rate, everyone should do themselves a favour and download Skyfire. Maybe if they get get enough users then some manufacturers might actually start shipping their phones with Skyfire over Opera. Plus, Skyfire is one thing I know all Pre/iPhone/Android users wish they had but they currently don't – that's gotta be worth something, right? :P
