HTC HD2 not that great for OpenGLES? – Update, actually works.

The Leo has had a lot of hype surrounding the processor, and it really should be something special, but the videos below show a different story.

It may well be just an issue of configuration, but so far it looks like the Leo is less good than the Diamond…

Clearly this isn’t ideal with a lot of frames skipped and a generally laggy feeling operation.

I’ll keep you posted as and when anything changes.

The video below is with a slightly different configuration, and clearly shows the HD2 can perform well!

Hey, compare to this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2htj8r1gWgc&fe...

The Leo is jerkier, and nowhere near as smooth.

    Thanks NaKrul,
I already gave the engagement ring to HD2, Just waiting for the wedding when it comes to USA. and when I saw the video I said OH NO! give me the ring back. But thanks to your link you save me from running away to Omnia II

and you can’t really use those videos, the devices have a smaller resolution and those apps aren’t designed for a snapdragon.

They're designed for OpenGLES 1/1.1 which should be supported on the HD2, and it's a two year old processor!

If I had an HD/Diamond2/Pro2 I'm sure it would be the same.

OpenGL ES 2.0 was NEVER designed to be compatible with OpenGL ES 1.x unlike the desktop. Blame Khronos (the OpenGL ES standard people) for causing endless compatibility issues by catering to the lowest hardware denominator.

Good thing PowerVR took the high path and built compatibility for 1.x. Others: HTC/Qualcomm/ATI looks like it has decent backwards compatibility with nits, Samsung: ZERO.

Oh yeah, let's use that little old excuse that if it was not design for that processor, resolution or OS, it has all the right to fail…
Pleeeaaaseeeee, get over it, we are talking about a snapdragoon cpu 1GHz!!! If it runs smoothly for diamond's processor, it has the right to run also smooth on the Leo processor…
Once again the prof that HTC always left something behind on their devices

    Actually… Just uploading a new video…

I think it may be the way we're using the hardware, not the hardware itself….

    Check the last video… :D

Also, you know how Manila and those other OpenGL things run really smooth?

    Strangerx Reply:

because they're designed to run on OpenGL ES 2.0. I've read alot on the xda-devs about the HD2 not 'supporting' OpenGL ES 1.0/1.1.

    NuShrike Reply:

This can be entirely blamed on the newer OpenGL ES 2.0 hardware in the SnapDragon which was never designed to support OpenGL ES v1.x. This is described fully in the OpenGL ES 2.0 standard.

So all OpenGL ES v1.x software WILL NOT transition smoothly to OGLESv2 hardware. Thanks Khronos!

Can we see the specs at the end? I tested my HD2 and got:

    alpha tex: 129943
torus (3k triangles) one light: 84115
    color blending: 124764
    sub texture: 84409

This was with wwe stock rom and the phone running for 3days 16hrs without a reboot.

    My HD2 just gave 0 for everything… :s

    Trying to see why.

that can happen sometimes. You may have to reboot or just try again. I noticed in the video they weren't getting the numbers either. I imagine they would have gotten 0's too.

Did you look at the video link from Nakrul (first post here)?

Yeah? can you now be objective with your comments for the benefit of every user?
or do you have an agenda against HTC?
Same test. HD2 runs smooth, and beats the HD. The HD has the same processor of TP/ Diamond.

HD2 doesn't run smooth in that video. It's jerky and horrible. It may render the objects moving faster, but it skips a bucketload of frames.

I have to disagree here. It does lag every now and then, but it's generally smoother than the HD and it is clearly running in high framrate

OMG I was so shocked, finally the last video made me believe in Snapdragon again ^^

If the rumor that MSMobiles.com spread – the HD2 gets an OFFICIAL WInMo 7 upgrade – I will definetely buy it.
Anyone here who has got some insider-information to confirm this? I mean WinMo 7 isn´t even official yet but I´m pretty sure Microsoft keeps HTC constantly up-to-date about the progress on WM7.

    l3v5y Reply:

As HTC is the largest WM6.X OEM, I'd be surprised if they weren't on daily builds from MS… I'm sure they'll have WM7 working on the HD2, but whether it gets released I'm less sure about.

lol ! The last video to the previous one is like a Geforce GTX280 to a Geforce 2 !

only if hardware acceleration in windows mobile had reached the same consistency as that of desktop…

    l3v5y Reply:

Some WM6.5 builds are using hardware acceleration for some things like the start menu…

Does the shipping build on Leo have it ?

Just wondering, what was this "slightly different configuration" that fixed the SpinTheBottle lag issue? I've got an HD2, have tried all various settings including hard resets and drivers from the 1.48 rom, but no luck :|

It's a code level change, using a slightly different configuration of the EGLdisplay…
