HTC Touch Diamond outselling iPhone 3G (in the Netherlands)
We have seen some evidence that Europe (and Japan) is not quite as receptive to Apple’s crippled smartphone as America is, and now we have a further report to support this.
Tweakers.net reports that the HTC Touch Diamond is outselling the iPhone 3G at a healthy clip in the Netherlands. While the iPhone started strong, with 35 000 sold within the first month after its release in July, sales slowed down considerably and have only reached 60 000 after 3 months. T-Mobile now only expect to sell 100 000 in total some time next year.
In contrast sales of the HTC Touch Diamond have also been strong, and HTC is confident of selling 100 000 this year into the Dutch market. Mark Moons of HTC Benelux says “That will happen before the end of the year.” Moons think the success is due to two factors. “First of mobile Internet. The unlimited internet for a tenner per month, the interest in smart phones in the Netherlands helped enormously. Also the Touch Diamond is much smaller than previous models and it seemed more like the ‘ordinary’ mobile phones, which people always had.”
While this area of localized success does not necessarily reflect on the likely global sales ratio, it does show that in more mature markets Apple’s iPhone will not necessarily displace the competition as easily as has been assumed by many of its fans.

You guys are delusional. Where in that article does it say the Diamond IS outselling the iPHONE?
Try again!

Did you read the article – the iPhone started strong, but then petered out, while the Touch Diamond is selling well, and will hit 100 00 very soon.

Admin, I believe josesxi’s comment was asking a valid question that you still haven’t answered.
Several facts were given – the Iphone has sold 60,000 units after 3 months, and is only on pace currently to breach 100,000 sometime in 2009.
The Diamond is ON PACE to sell 100,000 before year end ‘08. But, without the actual number sold in 3 months, or currently sold, it’s impossible to say that at this time, MORE Diamonds have been sold than the Iphone.
Capice?

While if one had to be pedantic your logic is sound, the source article of course explicitly says : “The HTC Touch Diamond in the Netherlands sells better than the iPhone 3G.” Thats in black and white. While one could argue they did not give all the information they had to explain how they came to their conclusions, their assertion is pretty clear.
Secondly the relevant quotes from the article clearly shows a different level of confidence in the sales of the two devices.
T-Mobile hopes to sell one hundred thousand there, but (spokeswoman Priscilla Tomasoa of T-Mobile) Tomasoa do not know when. “Sometime next year, I treasure.”
vs
The Touch Diamond reached that milestone of one hundred thousand soon, says director Mark Moons of HTC Benelux. “That happens before the end of the year.”
Now you may not be happy with the conclusions of tweaker.net, but you should probably go and take it up with them. Do you have any evidence to the contrary?
Lastly of course outselling does not mean sold more, it means currently selling faster, e.g. even if the iPhone was ahead in total numbers, if the Diamond was selling 20 000 per month and the iPhone 15 000 per month the Diamond is still outselling the iPhone, and will eventually overtake the installed base.
Capice?

My apologies… I was reading the wording wrong, as was josesxi.
I wasn’t reading it as meaning CURRENTLY outselling… I was reading it as outselling in amount currently sold, with which I found no proof.
I won’t take it up with tweaker, but they certainly could have been a little clearer!

No need tot take it up with Tweakers, Ken, I’m right here. In the reactions of the original article, the same discussion took place (in Dutch), as well as every other article my article was quoted (however Tweakers is the most visited telecomsite in the Netherlands, so it was the biggest discussion). The main point is that the Diamond will sell 100,000 before the year’s end (and I think that moment will be quite soon), while the iPhone will reach that point months later. Both sources didn’t want to say exact numbers to this date – because they don’t know. However, I’ve spoken to both sources more often and they both know they will be held to their words, meaning they won’t say a thing that turns out to be untrue. The truth is: I don’t know if the Diamond is outselling the iPhone in the Netherlands on a day-to-day basis, I do know the Diamond reaches the milestone of 100,000 (which is really a lot in the Netherlands, which has 16 million inhabitants) a lot sooner.

Thanks, Arnoud. And you’re right… 100,000 Diamond users out of only 16 million? Impressive, to say the least. It’s a SWEET phone, of course, and that’s why.
