Locus OS – cool location-based mobile OS UI from Microsoft

Istartedsomething.com noticed this cool concept UI by Barton Smith, an Australian designer, which shows what a location-based user interface would look like on a mobile device.

It seems to have elements to Zune and Android widgets and even TouchFlo3D.

It seems pretty lustworthy to me.  What do our readers think? Let us know below.

now if they actually used this in real life instead of showing off what they can do, but don't then MS would have a real winner on there hands. The only thing I don't like is the Zune menu system, it kinda throws the rest of the OS out the door, but it is still better then what we have today.

  • Inspired from: Zune, Android, Surface, iPhone & webOS. Result: quite cool

According to the creator, it was designed before those things, thus no inspiration. It only seems to have been inspired by Media Center and Surface.

oh, didn't even go that far.

And he also just slapped on the Microsoft name for effect.. This has nothing to do with Microsoft >_>

please God let this be windows mobile 7 !!!!

This would be cool even if it sits on top of everything else unifying all screensa and devices via the cloud.

Interesting specs listed at the above site.

It's not from Microsoft, the guy just put their name on it. Also, I see nothing original about this to make it more lustworthy than the Zune twist UO or Bumptop or whatever else it 'borrows from'.

We really can't confirm or deny it at this point.

  • That's one the best concepts I have seen, it actually seems to bridge the gap between design and usability very well. MS will NEVER do this, that's be too smart a move for them ;) but I must say I'd love a location based desktop.

Preferably one that would automatically load said desktop when I got to a location, e.g. my car's bluetooth or my home's/uni's wifi… if the phone noticed that and switched profile I'd love it. Then alerts could be set to remind me of specific tasks the next time I was at a location- e.g. "Remind me of task… the next time I am at…. Home location"

This would be groundbreaking, I just can't see it happening now :(

I wouldn't be so sure. Zune HD, Xbox etc. seemed to be going in the right direction. MS Courier concept seemed pretty slick.

Now, mix that with the FUSE group at MS and the Orion Project at MS… then the above seems like it could have been designed by MS specs.

It's possible… although, I might agree that that isn't what we'll see next week at WMC. lol

i would leave windows and android if this came out :)
just have their apps… WHY CANT WE ALL JUST GET ALONG!! :)

  • Microsoft, please let Locus and not Photon be the codename for Windows Mobile 7. Or just drop 7 and give me Locus. Such a sleek and elegant UI. Looks perfect for Tablets.

I'd like the UI on the HP Tablet. Kind of like an updated Origami?

It seems like it would need a serious sized screen for use, and we haven't seen the dialer or contact, or SMS apps.

Tie in the location aware, with zigbee or z-wave lights? and appliances? And home security systems?

what i find interesting is that there appears to be a battery icon and a signal icon alongside a carrier name along the top of the UI. Very phone like.
