SonyEricsson ends partnership with HTC

According to the Chinese Commercial Times report, SonyEricsson will switch its current Windows Mobile partner as soon as the company’s current Windows Mobile device – XPERIA X1 – ends its business cycle.
Sony Ericsson will however continue expanding its Windows Mobile portfolio with Mobinnova, the Taiwanese company responsible for imate Ultimate 8502 and 9502. Mobinnova, has just recently released their flagship device, a dual screen Windows Mobile phone, whose information can be found here.
The reasons behind this break up, has not yet been revealed, but one possibility would be cost cutting, since Mobinnova should be a much cheaper partner to work with. It does shows though a commitment to Windows Mobile so one, can only hope for Sony Ericsson to continue the great effort they did with XPERIA X1.
If you can think any other reason, why this seemingly fine partnership ended don’t forget to drop in a comment.

Possibly due to the release of the Touch HD. They’re been compared against each other in several reviews, with the HD coming out on top. Having tested both devices myself, I’m in agreement with the majority and now own a HD.
Not only that, the HD is selling like preverbial hot cakes. Its feature set and (almost) iPhone identical form factor are a winning combo, it’s the closest competition the iPhones had yet and many are referring to it as an “iPhone killer”.
In my testing of the X1 I found it to be less than I’d hoped for/overhyped. The keyboard was mediocre with not enough travel, the screen was recessed and resolution was too high for its size, and althought the build was solid it wasn’t consistent. Also I couldn’t help feeling that a larger part of the price was paying for the SonyEriccsson name when compared with the HD.

I can’t see how X1 and HD are competitors. X1 vs Touch Pro, yes. Touch HD vs iPhone vs Omnia, yes. But mixing the two groups? I think they are aimed at different target audience. One group says “Look at me, I’m shiny and you can show me off at a party, chicks digg shiny”, the other says “I can actually be practical am designed for a user that can use more than one finger at a time”. Just my point of view.

Horrible design & support = SE.
& also, the worst loser in Win Mobile game is Nokia…
The worst thing I ever saw was: Nokia acquired Symbian.
Who cares about that terrible buggy OS, Symbian now?

I agree. I wish I knew how to fix it….

As a prospective purchaser of the X1 this doesn’t fill me with confidence. If they are ending the relationship so soon they must have had issues along the product development cycle, and therefore the product could be sub-standard.
@x1 vs HD convo: I love keyboards on cells, but the HD has almost swayed me. Just once I would like shiny-and-chicks-dig associated with a WinMob device.

I’ll wait for HD+

simple
HTC didnt make the best device as SE requested, so they wanna move to a company that does what it says it’l do
HTC products as we all know have to have some shortcomings!

HTC deliberately makes Xperia lower class than HD. Even the prototype of xperia has 2 speakers, how come the final build has only 1 speaker?! I will see how is the X1’s design made from 2009, whether HTC makes some improvement or not! no more paint peeling and cracking!!!!

do some research on the x1 using google type in “x1 cracked casing”. An X1 owner myself am experiencing the problem too. HTC poor quality?? Can you put a price on damaged reputation to SE?
[Reply]
I ‘m sorry to hear that you are also experiencing the same problem. Could you tell us where your X1 developed cracks?

the crack on my x1 is right near the volume button – near the battery compartment. So far it looks as if the crack near the stylus is the more common one out of the 2… went to carphone warehouse in the UK today and they will not honour warranty – information regarding this seems to be thin and Sony Ericsson are not admitting there is a problem which makes it even more difficult to claim for us European customers.. Will be sending it to Sony ericsson directly on Monday and will keep you guys informed as to the progress. Very poor customer service, considering over £500 was paid for the item in the first place!

ok been a while since my last update with the x1 issues.. As predicted went to the carphone warehouse service centre (they deal with repairs even if you didnt buy the phone from them). The girl at the repair desk was completely useless and accused me of damaging the handset -even when i tried to explain that the handset had been treated with the utmost care and bought in loads of evidence printed from forums and websites! As predicted correctly they are ill-advised and ill prepared to deal with these sorts of queries… Anyway after being turned away from them, ive decided to send it off directly to the sony ericsson service centre and have written a letter explaining the problem. Its ridiculous from Sony ericsson, not to even acknowledge there is a design fault with the x1s. The main problem is that the handset appeals to only a niche sector of the mobile phone market – hence sales are slow, hence issues trickle in slowly to them.. watch this space to find out what happens next

Been a while since i updated this, if anyone out there is still reading! Sent direct to sony ericsson – service was very slow, had to chase them everyday for an eta, i believe, had I not done that it would have taken even longer – anyway finally received it on saturday gone – took approximately 9 working days so just under two weeks. its been returned to me, all as good as new, except back plate has got a long scratch on the back, but they are returning a new back cover to me.. so eventually resolved what a nightmare! They still havent admitted there is a problem so good to all you out there.
