Cracks on XPERIA X1 plastic casing

There seems to be something wrong with Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X1, as users from all over the world are reporting finding cracks on their brand new phones. I know that many of you already knew this by now, but since users at xda-developers.com are preparing to send a generic mail to Sony Ericsson, it is obvious that the situation with the cracks only got worse.

Furthermore, as Sony Ericsson and HTC just recently announced that they will end their partnership in the near future, this raises suspicions as to the reasons of this termination. Was the XPERIA X1 so badly build that made Sony Ericsson to take such a decision? We won’t know for sure, until an official statement from any company is released.

In the meantime, if you own an X1 check the plastic casing on it for any cracks and if you are unlucky and find cracks, join the rest of the upset users at xda-developers.com. If on the other hand, you are considering buying an X1, have in mind that the most reported model is the silver and thus be aware!

This is unacceptable for a device of this nature. If this is not resolved by Sony Ericsson soon, they will lose the remaining fans they have from the P990 debacle and the ones they had won over with this otherwise excellent device!

PS. I hope the black X1s without cracks don’t suddenly develop some in a few months!

I’m not going to consider either brand unless the situation is clear. Remember X1 is built by HTC. Sony said they’ll release another high-ender ~May, so I’m going to hold my breath for a little while. 6.5 device is around the corner.

I got a Samsung Epix, which is lost… it is not good anyway. It has *very* *very* poor audio quality with a headphone jack. I got a pair of Shure SE420 and they sounded like crap (very heavy background noise still noticable with 50% max output with an ext. volume control) on the Epix. Stay away from Epix if you’re a heavy music listener…

Sony is probably one of the top portable-audio brand, but my personal preference is Creative Zen X-Fi… an absolute knock out of ANY sony devices.

For phone my expectations are lowered, but still… Seriously, Only 3.2 MP camera (there are ones with 12mp camera, and even sony itself got one w/ 8mp cam), only 65k color screen, looks like a brick (even bigger than HTC Fuze), easily cracks, no official touch-flo when made by HTC, lack of good driver (qvga video vs reg. vga video), unfair pricing for U.S. customers, unreliable wi-fi connection…

For Sony it is more like a tragidy, but for HTC, their nature is not so vague — good or evil, there is no excuse for making such crappy device, and I ain’t going to buy it. I honor the spirit of a team more than individual effort since I’m in software engineering industry. This is no team effort, this is just some spit-outs of 2 competitors that do not get alone. HTC takes a bigger blame because it is making the base-stone. Being a smart-ass and at the same time making base stone is not going to work (period). Imagine a friend (previously rival) made you a very comfy chair as birthday present, but when you went to bathroom he kick on the legs of the chair so they will break. He then put the $2000 laptop you just bought on the chair so you can enjoy. Now you’re done in the bathroom and about to sit down on the chair to enjoy your laptop.

There are certain values even in the business world we should not tackle with. The value of being a smart ass is definately not one of them. One might be able to fool a partner, but he cannot escape the questioning of (future) customers.

I think Sony is desparate, with its consoles beaten by Nintendo, phones by Nokia, walkman by Apple/etc… I think it was a desparate move to go to HTC. Now that they have tasted the bitterness, I wonder if they’re desparate enough to roll out anything good in the next few months.

Sucking on the loyalty of the most loyal customers is the last thing one would do, even for a dying business.

There is no consipiracy! It is a definite problem with the X1! Most of us take excellent care of our devices especially since we all know one day they will end up on eBay. I had the BLACK originally (which was sent in error) and later got the SILVER that I wanted. I loved the look of the SILVER but then the cracks started to show up, the 5 second lags got noticeably more frequent and other cosmetic defects started to show. The device looked like it was falling apart after only 2 weeks!!!

I said I would never go back to the TOUCH PRO…well–GUESS WHAT!!

  • Yes! this is just a conspiracy! And I mean we all planned it all over the world joined our hands with our other hands holding our Xperias with cracks mostly on the exact same location. Which is near the volume down button. A slit that goes through and through the back of the battery case behind the battery cover. Yes! We conspire! We created back casings and specially manufactured cracked ones. So we can protest to change our damn 900$ phone. What could be more fun than this? Every powerful forces and people in the Earth attempted the world to be as one but failed, yet we did. Hurray! P.S. mine’s 08W46 crack’s at the conspired volume down button consipired after 2 months of sleek silver model. I had a micromini detonator that teared my crackspot right after 2 months of using. Geez what can I say. It worked out.

my silver X1 has developed same crack under volume control after 4 weeks.
never fall, never hit, or any thing to make crack.
when you pull battery up, you see that it has to crack because it’s too thin and slim plastic!

just have to say, damn you SE! King phone in damned case!

This is true for my silver Xperia has develop crack today (10th April-2009). I bought it in February 2009. The crack is at the corner of battery near to the camera and the volume control button. I have brought it to the the attention of SONY Ericsson, service centre. And I hope that they would acknowledge it, and replace it with a new and different batch. My guess is that they are using a cheap plastic that would not be able to take the stress, thus crack. Couple the heat that has been generated by the battery, it will accelerate and reduce the lifetime of the plactic, ie reduce the allowable stress of the plastic. It seems that Sony Ericsson has decided not to use HTC anymore for the production of Xperia. I think there is quality issue on the Sony Ericsson Xperia models

I have sent my complain to SE service centre and they are laying claim that such crack are subjected to excess forces. They have mentioned that they would give me a discount for the plastic body and request that let them knows which service centre I am going to. I am quite furious that they insinuate that I have subjected my phone to excessive force that is why it cracked. They are not admitting that there are design flaws. And mentioned in Malaysia there has not been any complain so far. And I am the first one. If anyone from Malaysia who has the similar problem let’s get together and see what we can do about it collectively.
