Good News: HTC to launch great new phone. Bad News: Windows Mobile not included
According to a senior executive of Telstra, HTC is going to launch a new touch phone that will be a direct competitor to iPhone and the newly released Palm Pre. In fact, Telstra’s executive after reviewing the Palm Pre at CES, said that the expected HTC phone is “better and more functional”.
Quoting the source (smarthouse.com) of this story:
The new touch phone has been developed using a combination of the Google Android operating system and Linux based software written by HTC. The screen is believed to be bigger than current offerings from HTC.
Executives from Telstra who had met with Palm at the CES Show in Las Vegas to review their new Pre offering said that the new phone from HTC was “better and more functional” they said.
“We have seen both and we believe that the new HTC phone will be a real competitor to the iPhone and the Pre which at this stage looks nice but is still not delivered to market”.
HTC executives who are at the show but not exhibiting have refused to comment on their new phone which is expected in the second quarter of 2009.
I honestly don’t know what to make out of this story. Should we expect just a Touch HD loaded with Android or something completely new? Is HTC keeping under wraps a similar Windows Mobile device? Could HTC’s flagship device for 2009, be using Android instead of Windows Mobile?
Hopefully all this questions (and many more) will be answered at Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona next month. For now though, you can tell us your thoughts using a comment.

It does sound fishy :

Who said that, the Telstra dude or Smarthouse (based on all those wacky android touch HD rumors etc)..?
Screen bigger that What ? the HD? I don’t think so. The HD is already a brick (I should know I have one) I can’t imagine a phone with a bigger screen.

i don’t see any disappointment on bad news. in the market, samsung do make a good job here by providing decent windows mobile with fast processor and high quality camera.

Android is just…… not cool. There’s no eye-popping “wow” like with iphone (and latest WM offerings) and, worse, the business features are very immature. The best thing about Android is the notification system. But a highly integrated notification system is not enough to make it really “killer.”
Am I the only one that thinks Android is a better competitor to, say, WM 2003 than WM 6.1 (let alone 6.5 and 7)?

You’re not the only one. WM users are a different breed these days. We’re not looking for iPhone competitors, we’re looking for devices that are better than the iPhone. iPhone and its competitors are a step backward.

I agree, Android in its current (and probably future) state is no match for the functionality of WM6.1, let alone 6.5 and 7.
Its immature and riding on gimmicks (notifications/open-source). It’ll only see business adoption after its ditched said gimmicks, become more business minded, and been around for a few years.

I think that the iPhone Killer hype is a bit outdated. There are much more phones out there, that are a lot better. The iPhone has been killed a while ago!
A consumer-smartphone should have a lot of online-web based (entertainment) content (like youtube, stocks, weather, LBS services etc.) and up to date hardware specs (like routable GPS, Camera, maybe a QWERTY keyboard, enough internal memory etc). Using a stylus is also outdated, so if only for this WM 6.1 isn´t that competetive anymore i.m.h.o.
My gut feeling says that either Android or the new Web OS (Palm Pre) will be up to date to the current standards, unless WM comes with an update to 6.5 or 7.0 or Apple introduces a new iPhone…
Either way, 2009 will be a great mobile year!

Considering that Android has suffered from holes like merely sending “reboot” as a SMS actually goes through a secret dodgey command line and actually reboots the phone as per the standard Linux command
‘reboot’ does, I think I am going stay well clear from Android unless sometime way in the future it has some truly needed stuff that the other phones don’t have.
