HTC Leak – all the pictures and our analysis
Here’s our own analysis of today’s major leak.
Below are 3 navigation-centred Windows Mobile devices, in the second being a dual GSM and CDMA device, a first for HTC. The Iolite has already been leaked earlier by eXpansys, so its likely this device will be announced at Mobile World Congress in February. The Twin shares the same styling as the Iolite, implying the release will also be around the same time. The Magnet is clearly a later model, so likely due sometime in H2 2009.

The Topaz is clearly and updated HTC Touch Diamond and therefore only likely to appear on AT&T towards the end of the year. It should be released elsewhere by mid-year after the anniversary of the HTC Touch Diamond release in May 2008. Of note is that the screen is clearly WVGA, which should go far to improve the typing experience on the device. Of note is that the Topaz and AT&T Topaz do not have 3.5mm headphone jacks, while the Topaz C clearly has.

The Cetrine bears the same styling as the Topaz C, but again lacks the headphone jack.

The Barium appears to be a slight refresh of the HTC Fuze for AT&T, and therefore due late this year.

The Jasper C appears similarly to be a Touch Pro refresh for Sprint, again likely due towards Q3 2009.

The Rhodium and Tungsten devices in CDMA and HSDPA versions appear to be the long awaited HTC Touch HD Pro. Of note is that there does not appear to be a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the device. The Touch Pro followed the Touch Diamond only by a few months, which suggests the HTC Touch HD Pro devices are also likely to come out very soon, making it another possible Mobile World Congress announcement.

The Maple, Willow and Cedar are Windows Mobile Standard devices.

The Beryl is a low-cost handheld which updates the HTC Jade/HTC Touch Viva already released. This means QVGA and likely EDGE.

The Firestone and Whitestone are both 2 media centric devices, with large WVGA screens and 3.5 mm headphone jacks. The Whitestone is clearly more visual orientated, with its kickstand, suggesting it may possibly have a technology like mobile digital TV built-in. The rather thick design suggests the same.

The Thoth is of course the Athena refresh.

Clearly the devices below are Android devices. On WMPoweruser.com, the less said the better, but one thing is clear – the rumours that 50% of HTC’s line-up in 2009 will be Android devices is clearly false.

By “slight refresh” for the Barium, Rhodium, and Tungsten, I hope you also mean to include the change to WVGA (D-pad-less front panel a-la Touch HD).

Thanks guys. This clears up a lot. Hope they will have one of these devices running 6.5.

Isn’t the Barium the AT&T variant of the other upcoming phones? It looks the same to me.

1. How do we know all (or most) of these phones run winmo?
2. WVGA will worsen the typing experience, unless the screen size is 3+ in. diag.
3. I hope that Barium is extremely prototype-y. Neon just doesn’t work for superphones :p
Bottom line, I don’t regret a single penny spent on my Fuze

Well aside from Android on the G1 and upcoming Sapphire family, what other mobile OS has HTC dealt with? There’s no way any would run the iPhone OS, and certainly not Palm’s new webOS (HTC stated its upcoming phones would be better than the Pre).
I would be surprised if the new WVGA screens are any smaller than 3.2″; HTC knows it got a lot of people’s attention with the HD’s 3.8″ screen, so that will be a likely target size.
Keep in mind these are merely device design pictures. We have no idea about the timeline, which means some or many of these could be launched with WM6.5 or even WM7. And besides, there’s no point in regretting buying the Fuze anyway, cause these devices might not even be released until the end of the year (owing to carrier delays, etc).

I didn’t even mention the iphone os or the web os. We don’t know which ones will have win mo and which ones will have android.
That’s why the statement “the rumours that 50% of HTC’s line-up in 2009 will be Android devices is clearly false” is invalid, or premature at best.
If you look at photos of touch pro and xperia next to each other, you see that the xperia’s screen, which has larger area, is narrower. So even my statement about minimum 3+ in. is actually not enough. I don’t want to do the math now, but even a 3.2 in. screen won’t “go far to improve the typing experience.”
In portrait mode, the typing experience itself will be the same. The advantage is that less of the screen is covered. But that’d be an overall experience, not a typing experience. In landscape mode, either there will be more keys to the side, or less of the screen will be shown. So there will be either little to no effect, or an unwelcoming side effect. A larger wide-screen will give you more space to work with, but not necessarily a better typing experience.
Of course we have no idea when these devices are coming out. That’s why I said I don’t regret getting a Fuze. I don’t see what you are getting at with your last paragraph, if that were a reply to my comment on the Fuze.
Oh, one last thing, if the device HTC (or whoever) is thinking any one of those phones up there are “better” than the Pre, they’re significantly underestimating the value of one-handed qwerty keypads. I’ve used both, and the only reason I prefer a side-slider is because of the screen size. Of course, the better-than-pre could really be better, and since more competition=better for me, I wouldn’t mind that.

UGH… only one phone in the Android section has a qwerty keyboard, and it’s got the worst side-slide keyboard of the bunch (4 rows instead of 5).
HTC: take the Barium, Rhodium, or Tungsten. Put a dpad on face, in the middle of the button cluster. Put android on it. Try to put a tilt screen on it. Give it decent battery and wifi. I’ll buy it!
Given a choice between the G1 and the Memphis… I’ll only buy the Memphis if it has significantly better battery life.
And, please, quit it with the chin-phones. The Hero looks laughably bad.

some decent designs there! just hope the internals (perfomance) match up to some of the competitors !
i vowed not to buy HTC untill they sort their video drivers out! the guys at xda devs are the only reason why i stick to htc
i had envisaged a diamond sized full screen device would be in there!

Wouldn’t the “chin” on the Jasper C most likely indicate that it is an Android phone? Especially since the Tungsten W is the probable Touch HD Pro for Sprint and the successor to the Sprint Touch Pro.
It makes sense, since every other HTC Android phone shares a similar “chin” design aesthetic… but I have no way of knowing for sure.

I would love for a Touch HD – without a keyboard to come out for Sprint. The Diamond was a fiasco – bad battery life – connectivity release issues, connectivity poor in the same locations as the previous Touch, heat up issues, wretched bluetooth quality. I ended up going to my old HTC touch which is a year older but has better signal quality, bluetooth quality and battery life.
If they do come out with a Touch HD with no keyboard for Sprint I would GLADLY trade the camera for just the flash – the flash is extremely useful when using vjcandella or other flashlight apps which enable you to use the flash as a flashlight – with minimal battery drain! THe camera is more likely going to restrict where I can use the phone – e.g. courtrooms, military complexes, gyms, clubs, research labs, etc. Again if they offered a choice of models – one with the camera (which takes poor pictures) or one with the flash which is great as a flashlight I bet more people would opt for the flashlight.

I prefer an HTC on Android plaform to iPhone or BlackBerry. Android is more open and perspective than "snobist" Mac.
