Mobinnova ICE photoview

        

Mobinnova is a new OEM who famously won the contract for the next Sony Ericsson Xperia.

Their ICE smartphone is their first mainstream Windows Mobile device and is a pretty innovative device, featuring many attempts to do things a bit differently.

I have just received a review device from eXpansys, and will be putting the device through its paces over the next few weeks. To kick of the review here is some photos of the device’s hardware features after the break.

The front, with the screen off, is a striking black slab, and appears rather sleek.  It makes for a pretty good mirror, and the facade is hardly disturbed by the front-facing camera, earphone, dial and end call keys. It is also fetchingly framed by the chrome ring around the edge of the screen.

The back is also pretty minimalist, featuring the 3.2 megapixel camera without flash and stereo speakers. Due to the camera being a bit proud of the back the speaker grills are not covered when the device is placed flat on a table. Unfortunately this also makes it very likely the camera surround will show wear pretty quickly.

The left of the device only features a door for the mini-USB port. The attachment is with a small elastic band, and does not inspire confidence in its durability.

The right side has the easy to press volume and camera keys, and another door for the microSD card, featuring the same flimsy attachment. Of course Mobinnova should be congratulated for having an easy to replace microSD card slot which does not require taking the back off or removing the battery.

 

The bottom is devoid of any buttons, but the top features a power button and very well implemented ringer switch, and also the telescopic stylus slot. The stylus is extremely small and narrow, and very short, even when extended.

 

When compared to another back slab, the HTC Touch HD, the device is the same height, but clearly a lot narrower (and of course with a smaller screen).

The thickness is very similar, and the ICE feels and fits very well in the hand.
