Acer could launch its own App store

undefined

Acer is considering doing what HTC wont – launching its own Windows Mobile app store.

At a London press event yesterday, Acer’s senior corporate VP and smart handheld president Aymar de Lencquesaing told Mobile Entertainment  that Acer is examining the viability of an app store, which would be accessible from its new range of Windows Mobile devices.

Although no firm decision has been made, Acer would be joining the likes of Nokia and Samsung, who have been attempting to emulate the success of the Apple App store.

The main roadblock to manufacturers monetizing their end users are carrier resistance to being disintermediated.  While Acer, unlike HTC, do not have many carrier partners yet and are therefore free-er to implement features like App and Music stores, Acer’s ambition of becoming a major smartphone force will be difficult to achieve without the distribution power of the larger carriers like Vodafone, who have no intention of becoming big dumb pipes.
