Samsung Omnia tops in Germany, elsewhere in Europe
We have written just recently about Samsung’s success with the Omnia, which according to Gartner was single-handedly responsible for preventing the European smartphone from shrinking. We have also seen some hints that the Omnia is doing very well indeed.
Samsung has released some data from European market research analysts GfK to underscore their great performance. According to Samsung in December the Samsung Omnia 8GB took 14.9% of the German smartphone market, ahead of Blackberry Storm at 11% and the Nokia E71 at 7.6%, and lastly the iPhone 16 GB at 7.6%. In fact the Omnia has been ruling the German Smartphone roost since November.
In fact when taken together, the 8GB and 16 GB Samsung Omnia take 18% of the smartphone market, the iPhone 8GB and 16 GB 12%. All Blackberry’s together (Bold, Storm and Curve) took 28% of the market.
In France the Omnia has 17.2% of the market, and in Italy 15%, and features in the top 3 devices in both countries. In fact in the whole of Europe the Omnia was always one of the top 10 selling handsets.
In the Ukraine Samsung’s smartphones are particularly popular, being the top-selling smartphones for the whole 2008, and also in December. In fact Samsung took a massive 27% market share and 22% by revenue. Sony Ericsson presented a distant second place at 9%, and Nokia took only 3%.
The Samsung Omnia itself, which on launch received 9 independent awards from electronics and telecommunications publications, had 4.9% of the smartphone market in the Ukraine, in contrast to the the 1.7% market share of the iPhone.
While such news will make many Windows Mobile Omnia owners happy, Samsung’s decision to move to Symbian for the Omnia HD will cast a dark cloud. It will remain to be seen which part of the Omnia’s success is due to Samsung and which is due to Windows Mobile.

It is so bad that Samsung is moving from Windows Mobile to Symbian for Omnia series.

Yeah, I would have preferred the Samsung Omnia HD to be windows mobile instead of Symbian.

The fact Samsung moved to Symbian in order to keep its next Omnia competitive may be a telling sign about how poor it is to stick with WM.
