Full MIX09 Windows Mobile 6.5 presentation – the honeycomb is dead

STANDBY="Loading Windows Media Player components..." TYPE="application/x-oleobject">

For readers eager to learn more about Windows Mobile 6.5, this hour-long video is an essential watch.  Some tidbits of note is that the honeycomb, after negative feedback, has been killed off, and widgets may be cross compatible between IE and Opera Mobile.

  • Wow… I kinda liked the honeycomb. I must have been in the minority. However, I must admit, I didn’t want the honeycomb as a start replacement. To me, I would have preferred it locked onto a hardware button. Like an app button. But then again, if I had my way, all new devices would have at least as many buttons as the Sprint Mogul or Xperia X1. If I wanted a touch-screen ONLY phone, I would have bought a damn iphone. Give me fricking buttons and a d-pad!

  • The honeycomb is gone but the icons still have the same arrangement.

honeycomb is not gone… just the outline of each honeycomb is. lol. not that I care though since I like the honeycomb layout. I really think they should make it so you can scroll from the beginning and it takes you to the bottom of the startmenu instead of having to go through the whole thing especially since the scrolling only takes you page by page. What if the program I want to start is at the bottom? I have to go through 4 pages of icons to get to the program I want? Sounds annoying. They should let you come from behind too. (hahaha)

Great presentation. I am ready for a phone with 6.5. If anyone knows when Verizon will have one, put it on the net.

  • The honey comb graphics are just that… a graphic. They’re experimenting with the design. The layout hasn’t changed. Just the graphic. It’s very easy to do. I’ve replaced the honey comb background with just a semi-transparent file a long time ago (as to reveal the background) and I replaced the “highlighter” graphic file with a circular bubble.

The thing that is REALLY cool about the honeycomb menu is that it is COMPLETELY customizable. You can easily resize the icons (1 big icon per screen) or a bunch of little tiny icons. I can see some really bright minds creating some really awesome stuff with this.

Sure you have to scroll through 4 pages of icons to find what you want… but the start menu is always unorganized at first. Just like the original start menu, start off by creating some themed folders and organize it yourself. The “Settings” folder has already been organized by their respective “tabs” in the later releases (Personal, System, Comm).

The only bad thing is that you lose your “Most Recently Opened” menu. The Smartphone version overcame this by having displaying a window of icons of the last 8 recently opened programs, with a left softkey as “All Programs” which linked to the full fledged start menu. It was a welcome edition to the smartphone edition of Windows Mobile… and I’m sure they could easily implement something like that as well… or simply just have the top 2 rows of icons dedicated for recently opened icons.

  • I too miss the Most Recent Programs(MRU). Microsoft can implement this feature in honeycomb, by showing 5 recent programs at the top then favorites and then the rest of the icons.

Is it just me or is this presentation SOO unprofessional?!
They are literally all over the place with the slideshows and demos…
I am neutral with Windows Mobile because I’ve never used a WM device but I have an iPod Touch and that is amazing. AGAIN, im not here to start a war.
