Is this Windows Mobile 7?

wm72 wm71

A kind tipster send us this screen shots of what purports to be Windows Mobile 7. The latest inside rumours put the OS as being available to OEM’s by the end of 2009 and out on devices by Spring 2010.

From what I have heard so far, it sounds worth the wait.

Keep a close eye on WMPoweruser.com (RSS feed here) for the latest Windows Mobile (7 and other) news.

  • If it’s not a psd mockup, wm7 will be a great upgrade :)

It looks…. different but strangely I like it. Give it some more transparency (of course using openGL h/w acceleration throughout whole GUI) and I’m sold.

Hopefully MS will release this for ALL compatible devices or at least make all wm6.5 devices wm7 updateable.

why on earth would the makers of directx use opengl? that would be retarded

    Unknown Reply:

Microsoft use opengl for everything as it does different things, it isnt the first time using opengl all the screen savers from windows xp to 7 are in opengl.

Cant really tell too much from that, if its real or not but doesnt look that different, still the same old icons for builtin apps. Not going to start getting concerned with WM7 just yet, 6.5 is still yet to be released.

Aint those icon-slide strangely similar to the mac/iphone slides? Like photos, music and so on? I’m not sure, but I seriously doubt this will be windows 7, it aint neutral enough. Just look at the red glowing border and the wallpaper, is it really the Microsoft-look?

    [Reply]

    wreiad Reply:

YES! The icons have a cover-flow layout and look like iPhone icons. I seriously hope this is fake.

Worked out what was bugging me that mkes it looks fake
    1 it isnt (shiny)
2 the second icon in the scroller looks fake as it is not transparent
3 the signal and battery icon are swapped
    4 has a photoshped feel

  • zellbz:

Well if they remove to black bottom bar from the whole OS then that would be a big improvement and it seems like this is gonna be widget based to fill up the center………

    [Reply]

  • pauloke:

This looks very heavy influenced by touchflo3d.

Would be more useful if the tab switcher was where the clock is – easier to reach with finger.

It appears they have moved the signal bar back up top (used to be opposite side to the battery bar) and replaced it with the volume bar.

If this is true (appears to be based on some truth) then they are making good progress. Keep it up. Cant wait to see what is under the bonnet.

  • -G-:

I cant wait for WM7, but I REALLY hope that the WM 6.5 devices are upgradable to WM7, devices like the HTC superstar (which i’m thinking of getting).

    yes thats the one!
    the Superstar! :)

I think this might be a concept. Alot of it looks like the earlier leaked photos of early mockups, but with a red color. Also the top bar looks oddly Androidish.

  • jatin:

that looks like pointui 2 with a different theme and some modifications

Where is the start button? I’m surprised Microsoft would remove that.

Looks like a pointui skin judging by the contacts & phone button plus the middle button.

Okay now I certinely believer after seeing the new pic.. But why have they ditched the windows flag??

Well, they mandated the windows button, so why waste screen real estate on it?

Well we’ll see as time presses on. I heard there will a beta later this year:
    http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1908

But judging from the Live Mesh ad, I still don’t think that change remove the soft flag. Other than that, the homescreen layout is also different:

Oh well. I guess things happen

  • Wishmaster:

I think those are just concept pics of what wm7 GUI is supposed to look like.

It is similar to first pics of wm6.5. They too were inconsistent(see the lower bar) but were just ilustration of what it is supposed to be in the final version so I think that we will see windows flag again  after all they wouldn’t ditch their logo if they want wm7 to be part of bigger ecosystem.

  • Craig S:

It’s obvious that they were focusing on the integration of Standard and Professional, which is why they weren’t prepared for the “Touch-friendly” tsunami. These concepts look great for a Q or BlackJack but not a Touch HD

    admin Reply:

I think this is very true. Everything is still based on scrolling and clicking and hierarchical lists. It does not seem to make good use of the freedom of a large 2D canvas.

    [Reply]

    wreiad Reply:

Well the left photo certinely looks optimised for touch-based devices with it’s maps app, but the second screen really does look old. At best, it looks like a skin of the old version 5 standard screen.

  • wreiad:

I wonder if this was leaked in reponse to iPhone 3.0..

    [Reply]

  • wreiad:

You know Admin, we’re seeing some inconsistencies with these photos just like the Windows Mobile 6.5 leak, which were confirmed to be concepts. The 2nd photo’s bottom indicators have been switched. The magnifying glass and 3G icons are different. The 1st photo has a battery indicator at the bottom left, while the 2nd has a volume indicator instead, and there’s a signal indicator at the top bar. I’m gonna go ahead and conclude that these photos are either early concepts, or fake.

Given that even WM 6.5 has not settled down yet, I will call it as concepts.

So far these look about the same as what was “leaked” of WM7 two years ago… http://gizmodo.com/341287/windows-mobile-7-details-leaked-+-multi+touch-motion-gestures

and here is an old article about what it is supposed to do… http://news.softpedia.com/news/Microsoft-Windows-Mobile-7-0-Preview-or-Simple-Mockup-75751.shtml

If you ask me the look of it hasent changed much in two years, but I suspect they have been working on the guts more than the final look, and if these are real leaks, they are alpha. Like the honeycomb of 6.5, we should see a lot of changes from here to release and what I am excited about is how they are going to implement the GUI with the functions. From my understanding, and if the old articles hold any truth, we should be getting a lot more than just a new skin with WM7, but a new concept of mobile computing built from the ground up.

    Peter Reply:

That article clearly states January 6, 2008 which was 1 year and 2 months ago, not nearly 2 years.

I was scrambling to find something close to what I read two years ago, and that was close. If you search hard enough you could probably find it. It had at least a dozen screen shots and several pages about multi touch gestures, and even using the camera as an optical censer for added gesture recognition. The point is I recognize the design from a while ago.

So this link doesn’t help with my two year argument  , but it does have a lot of info of possible WM7 features, so all of you who like to dream, here you go. Notice that there is a Zune player

Although getting a facelift, it is obvious wanting to capture a consumer oriented design but still too focused on technical features. It will not make a sensational difference from current Windows Mobile. If this is the final look, it will not succeed (I do not say fail because as long as you have cash to burn, nothing will fail).

  • duchski:

Again, if the pictures are real it proves Microsoft is not serious about world domination, excuse me, Smartphone domination. It’s all about the interface and speed and home picture on the right still has the big clock bar, status bar and them mothing in the middle like Smartphones offer miles of screen real estate that should be left untouched. One thing that is revolutionary though, at least in MS standards, is the lack of the Start button. I do not think it is necessary but it has always been integral part of GUI in all WM releases.

    [Reply]

  • santod:

reply to duchski’s comment, The new standard for “Windows Phones” will be that all devices have a hardware START button. That should eliminate the need for one on-screen, as shown in the screenshots.

An important thing which has not been mentioned yet: There are no zoom in/out buttons in the maps application.
This could mean that it’s running on a device with multitouch screen…

    [Reply]

  • It’s nothing that looks like windows at all. You would think there would be some continuity between their products. I’m thinking it’s not real.

  • Mr. Reeee:

Sure looks like a bad copy of the iPhone UI, run through a blender.

That’s unsurprising, since Microsoft does little else other than copy or steal ideas from other developers. AND do it badly.

iPhone OS X 1.0 was light years ahead of WinMo. iPhone 3.0 puts WinMo on par with cuneiform.

Like it or not, Apple is Microsoft’s R&D department.

  • I call BS. I think this is a fake. First, there is absolutely no sign of the Windows logo, which as never been missing from any build of Windows, like ever. It’s part of their branding.

Second, it’s a radical departure from the styling they are setting up for 6.5. Microsoft moves in smaller steps, traditionally. Just look at the evolution of Big Windows. The biggest jump was from 3.1 to ‘95 — and that wasn’t as big of a jump as this is compared to WM6.5.

  • Billiam:

seriously, if this is real it truly shows that MS has absolutely no creativity or interest in doing anything that advances customer base usability…

    pathetic and expected.

I think this are screens from a couple of years ago, around 2005. I remember Cnet showing a few of them, they had the same UI elements/design as this ones. I also noticed in one of the screens, number 17, that they show an icon for Cingular Media store, a company that became At&T at the end of 2006. So everything seems to indicate this might had been what Winmo7 looked like a few years ago, I don't believe it will look anything like that today, at least i hope so. In addition to that the media player has nothing to do with the Zune HD UI, which we now know will be part of windows mobile 7.

    [Reply]

  • So, how many of you switched over already to windows 7 today? Is it the samo samo Microsft blue screen of death or did they finally come out with something worthwhile…might be time for them by now. 7 is my lucky number so I will try to get the download done soon.
