More Windows Mobile 7 goodness
Here are some more shots showing the Windows Mobile 7 UI as presented in the built-in apps.
The first screen would also be the first to show the look of the Windows Mobile Marketplace. As can be seen it will also play a role in promoting Microsoft’s online services, which likely due to anti-trust reasons Microsoft is reluctant to ship pre-installed with their devices.
The IM app uses an attractive UI (no sign of Windows 3.1 here) and features contact pictures.
The last picture of of the Zune UI.
While these screen shots raises concerns with me regarding navigation and task switching (possibly alleviated by hard buttons) it is however clear that any concerns regarding the cosmetics of the user interface will be laid well to rest.

Hah! I told you about the orb! I mean, why would they just ditch it after the Live Mesh ad? The screenshots are beautiful, but again, inconsistent, perhaps showing that these are from earlier builds or just simple concepts. I’m still excited either way. I hope they keep the homescreen.

Damn, those apps means these concepts are recent. Microsoft has serious trouble with the fact that they’re trying to fit one OS on a million different form factors. This will sell to a lot of entry-level consumers who don’t care, but for people that love using a lot of features on their big-screen Omnia or TouchPro2, these look a bit underwhelming. Also reminds me of how they called the XP UI “Fisher-Price”
I appreciate the update of common controls to something more modern-looking though, and I’m sure this’ll look great by the time it actually comes out (like 6.5 did on a Fuze in the MIX09 vid)

I’ve always hated the menus on Zune players. Why not model the new service after the desktop software? That thing stomps all over iTunes in the design department. At the very least, make it look like Mobile Marketplace.

It looks nice, but I really hope that the touchscreen version looks different. Personally, I’m not too keen on the orb; I liked the start menu at the top, and I liked the “Windows-ish” feel to Windows Mobile. It’s nice, but it’s just not my idea of a Windows mobile device.

I kinda wish they would just ditch the 2 softkeys at the bottom. If its a non-touchscreen with a D pad, have the center button pull up a multidirectional semi-trasparent 4 way quick menu. It just takes up alot of real estate.

They can’t ditch the 2 softkeys.

Unless you 2 have excellent, viable alternatives, they really can’t ditch the soft keys.

You didn’t give an explanation. iPhone and Pre don’t have softkeys. Windows Mobile before version 5 didn’t have softkeys. I’m just asking you what happens if they remove the softkeys.

They can’t ditch them because that’s just how Windows mobile is. Ditching them would be creating something entirely new, or copying the competitors, and I don’t believe either “solution” to be viable at this time. Not if they want to keep marketshare and stay relevant. They have their own way of doing things, so it’s not the same with every OS. The iPhone clearly has some implementation of softkeys through it’s use of icons at the bottom, so I don’t know what you’re talking about. The Pre is built by Palm, so they don’t have to worry about how their OS will look on different form-factors like a smartphone with the Dash’s form-factor for example. It’s also built for quite specific hardware. I don’t know what the big deal is with keeping softkeys. They make your options obvious when you’re viewing a program. Saving real screen estate? What the hell the softkeys block you from displaying that is so important? I really don’t get it.

My bad, I thought you actually had some reason they couldn’t remove the softkeys, but you’re just saying like them. As I said, Pocket PC 2003 Professional on my phone didn’t have any, so they wouldn’t be copying anyone – you could even argue that they were copying Symbian or J2ME when they put softkeys in. As for your other points, iPhone’s icons are just icons (not softkeys), and Web OS will be on more than just the Pre (which basically does have Dash’s form factor except that the keyboard slides).
If you like them that’s OK, I never said keeping them was a big deal. I just thought you had a reason they couldn’t go.

I still don’t understand. Why do you keep saying that Pocket PC 2003 lacked softkeys as a reason? All this time I was thinking that everything after Pocket PC 2003 was an evolution of it. Looks like I was wrong. Again, the iPhone’s bottom icons are obviously some implementation of softkeys because they do roughly the same thing. What I meant by “form-factor” is that the Pre is a touchscreen device, while the Dash is a non-touchscreen device. Again, the Pre also has a gesture area that gives shortcuts. You still haven’t given any good reason why they should go, or again, offered any viable alternatives to the softkeys. They’re here to stay.
The more Zune UI on there, the better IMO. Exceptionally one-handed frindly.

Interestingly, that picture on the far left reminds me quite a bit of Motorola’s old UI on the RAZR and variants, right down to the font!

This is starting to look better and better each time new pics are revealed.

“Hard buttons?” Don’t you know it’s illegal to put hard buttons on phones anymore…

Does anybody think that windows mobile 7 could be release ths year? I know Microsoft said that it would be released next year, but they also said that windows desktop 7 would be released next year aswell. I mean could the HTC Firestone or Superstar be a WM7 phone? Why would HTC release a Tegra phone late this year and then another in spring of next year.

I think at this stage the OS choice has already been baked into upcoming devices, but that does not exclude an upgrade in the future after release.

Why don´t you note a news source??? You could have done those in Photoshop as well….
