Samsung Omnia Pro B7610 vs HTC Touch Pro 2

So the final score is 3 draws, 5 for the HTC Touch Pro 2 and 11 to the Samsung Omnia.

Of course a simple score can never really tell one which device to get, and it could be one feature, like the 5 row keyboard for example on the Touch Pro 2 which trumps all the other advantages of the Samsung Omnia Pro, but it certainly seems HTC has got some pretty steep competition.

With both devices likely to be widely available, at least in Europe, we are faced with a difficult choice.

Which one will you chose?  Let us know in the comments.

Edit: I thought I would explain the one controversial choice – TF3D 2 vs TouchWiz 2.  While I love TF3D HTC has always refused to allow 3rd party extensions that would make it even more useful, such as a Tasks tab for example.  This is in stark contrast with Samsung, who are very welcoming of developers and encourage 3rd party widgets, and have even set up a widget store, like SE’s Xperia panels store, but likely to me much more active. This is much closer to the traditional Today screen model than TF3D and deserves the point.

    what is their problems!
HTC, Toshiba, Samsung always left out USA 3G on their latest phone!
Sony, Acer, Pharos have no problems including USA 3G on their phone! 900/1900/2100 hsdpa or 850/1900/2100 hsdpa !

Video editor, DLNA, Digital Natural Sound Engine

seems to be more usable and functional than the HTC BS. DLNA is real functionality versus who really uses their phone for conference calls?

Omnia Pro wins hands down for most of the real technology. Too bad neither steps up to Cortex level. In fact, the “Omnia HD” has the better cpu/gpu (if not screen) than the Omnia Pro on a OS that can actually take advantage of it. Bit of a shame.

  • I’ve got to point out that while the Samsung phone doesn’t have xda support it does have OEM-developer support (to date I’ve got yet to find out how to submit development questions to HTC). Samsun supports develoeprs through http://innovator.samsungmobile.com for all of the operating systems that they support (Symbian, Windows Mobile,…).

Are you serious? in what ways is touchwiz2 better than tf3d2??
And not giving a point to touch pro for “hiding” the fm app doesn’t make a lot of sense either.

But I do agree that the omnia pro is a formidable competitor

me, I don’t think I can do away with xda-devs :p stuck with htc :(

The reason is actually for Joel’s reason above – Samsung actually supports 3rd party widgets, while HTC has always refused any supported 3rd party extension to TF3D.

    [Reply]

    dave s Reply:

Then it should read “3rd party support” or something
Purely from a usability standpoint–assuming both devices are targeting business users–tf3d2 will murder touchwiz2

Oh, and being “much closer to traditional Today screen” isn’t always a good thing. spb mobile shell looks nothing like a traditional today screen, but it’s widely popular (hint: ease of use + efficiency)
Besides, you can either switch back and forth to the traditional today screen, or even add a tab for that to tf3d2

The FM Radio function can be enabled with a .CAB file that’s floating around on the XDA-Dev site so that should have been a draw. XDA-Dev site support aside, Samsung got some things right with this phone(Non-Qualcomm CPU, 3.5 MM headphone jack, AMOLED screen) and deserve some credit for that. Not trying to knock HTC but they’ve been making the same design choices that have continued to hampered their products for years.

Interesting that there was nothing about the forward facing vidcam that the TP2 has ~ think skype calling, VIDoIP, etc…also, is the Samsung better in res than the 800×480 on the TP2?

    [Reply]

    Chris Reply:

As far as I know, there is absolutely no VOIP software that can take advanage of the front facing camera.

And screen resolution is the same on both devices…WVGA=800×480

    [Reply]

    Joel Johnson Reply:

There’s no standard API for front facing cameras. Also here in the USA if you have a front facing cam you can only use it to call all people on the same carrier as you for astronomical rates which some what prohibits their use. Not only are they not a deal breaker, in many cases they are useless.

    Ok,

    Touchwiz2 vs. TouchFLO 3D = Touchwiz win?

Dude, let’s take the first gen comparison. TouchWiz vs TouchFLO. Come on, even though that was back then in the day, I’d say it was pretty even. Touchwiz is newer too. Take TouchFLO 3D and throw it against TouchWiz, and TouchWiz DIES. Now the 2.0 ver of TouchFLO3D? Come on. Every review site has given a huge thumbsup to HTC from the start, and for you to say that TouchWiz will take the cake is ridiculous.

I believe more people feel LG’s S-Class > Samsung’s Touchwiz, and if people left and right are putting TouchFLO 3D on their WinMo phones, then I think it’s pretty obvious who the winner is.

i fully agree that the preference for the joke that is the touchwiz UI is laughable at best. that MUST be a typo, you cant be serious about that. ive had both HTC devices and the omnia and the only thing touchwiz is good for is shortening your battery life by 3/4 and making winmo even more fiddly than it already is. wasnt it just yesterday that you posted a video of the “new” touchwiz here where almost everybody commented on how sluggish and slow the UI response was? and dont get me started on aestethics, with the bubblegum asian style and font chaos of the samsung vs the understated elegance of the touchflo UI…

bottom line: to give that piece of crap the preference over the increasingly attractive and MUCH deeper touchflo that now goes to the calendar level, unifies messaging, call and email histories and whatnot…that MUST be a typo.

and i say that as someone who makes it a point to not buy HTC anymore (because of the crappy CPU and camera performance) until they get their stuff sorted out. but the UI certainly is NOT the problem with HTC right now.

    Strangis Reply:

Agreed 100%. The Samsung is looking almost tempting enough to break my “no new phone until WM7″ rule, though the first thing I would do is kill that HORRIBLE TouchWiz interface, and try something like PointUI or Mobile Shell so I can at least get close to the TouchFlo feel.

Even without the ability for 3rd party tabs, TouchFlo is easily the best mobile UI out there, and gets better with every iteration. This includes all non-WM smartphone except for maybe the Pre which is pretty impressive after playing with one for a day.

I hope HTC manages to get their act together in time for WM7. I think they grew too big too fast, and if they don’t smarten up, they’re gonna lose a lot of former fans.

No Doubt, Omnia Pro is better than Pro 2, HTC always make mistake by not listening customer demand features (Amoled, 3,5 mm port, higher cpu etc), thanks for giving weak point for your competitor HTC

  • Chris:

Interestingly, I just tried this chart with the X1 and the TP2, and it came out to a draw. The only controversial decisions could be the fact that I gave the X1 the frequency edge b/c it has US 3G a la X1a, and the fact that I drew on the UI since the X1 gets new panels sporadically, and will likely get many more with the upcoming X2, but the TP2 will never (as has always been HTC’s policy) get an official Touch Flo update.

  • SD:

The Omnia might not have XDA support, but it will have sites dedicated to it, for sure.

I’m starting to lean more and more towards the Sammy. It’s about time HTC got slapped in the face with the reality that we consumers have other choices.

I have literally been dreaming about the day i can get the Touch Pro 2 here in the USA. Even though I was cursing them for not including a flash, not improving the camera, and not using a better CPU. It looks like Samsung took care of all of that and then some (even put in a 3.5 mm jack).

Boy it sure is too bad the screen doesn’t tilt on that Sammy. If it had a 5 row (offset) keyboard and tilting screen this decision wouldn’t even be close.

I hope to see both of these devices with USA 3G in the near future. Perhaps I can only make a decision after seeing them both in person.

Touch Pro2 for the main reason it will be on T-Mobile US 3G. T-Mobile has taken good care of me, service has been top notch and my G1 will be very happy with my wife. And I like what I see in TouchFlow 3D, Straight Talk, the contact/phone integration and the tilt screen.

The shoot-out is NOT complete until you include total RAM and RAM available for apps after the boot (incl. mfg specific UI).

I’m afraid that in this regard Omnia Pro falls on it’s face, if the rumors are true.

It has c. half the RAM of of TP2.

If that is true, it’s not a true heavy use business phone. That RAM just is NOT enough for a modern WM phone with an added RAM hungry skin UI layer.

I do like HTC, bu i must agree that the absence of both the 3.5 jack and a camera with flash makes me slowly go away from this brand.

A touch Pro II without flash and without 3.5 jack is a shame and also in my opinion a terrible marketing mistake.

Even if you are strong, you cannot play with ur customers like HTC currently does for a long time.

Btw, this Samsung Omina Pro really looks great. To replace my Touch HD in August would be perfect!

the onli diff between op n tp2 is the cam.
apart frm that though they r claiming a dedicated graphics chip, there isnt any…its something similar to x1,which is what evn the tp2 has.
secondly htc are the leaders in winMo customization and u mite hav guessed hw impeccable is tp2 in usage and in every other aspect….
finally the most imp aspect : hardware
omnia pro has onli 135mb ram which is half that of tp2…so maybe it wont be so fluid as tp2 and not much multitaskin wud be possibl…so the tp2 is a clear winner[except for a cam though i dont think its such a concern]
watch out for the xperia2 it has same specs at tp2 as of nw apart from 8 mp cam…so until the rumoured 512 mb ram, 800mhz processor on x2 come true ,,,the TP2 is the king of winmo…

June 24th HTC will be having a confrence.
@sarkis…man really lukin forward for it,hoping HTC opt for snapdragon n amoled screen or maybe evn a tegra chipset…HTC rule \\m//

i have a feeling that ROM is not fully finished yet but all in all the interface seems pretty snappy.. not overly snappy for a 800 Mhz proc. but i like already what i see.

The dual-led flash is certainly something i like and something that HTC never delivered.. that’s why this year i will choose Omnia instead of TP2.. so.. HTC lost two customers in my family because we can’t stand any more HTC underdeliverance.

I’ve already committed to the Touch Pro 2 so this new option has come too late for me. The Omia Pro does appear to be better spec’d on some important areas (CPU speed / memory / display) although it has come out a little later so should be better (not much later I admit). If I were making my decision now I believe I’d still go with the HTC for the following:-

    1. I’ve had three htc phones to date and I’ve been very happy with them. I’m sure Samsung are fine also though.
    2. The keyboard is great – numbers having their own row is wonderful compared to the tytn II and I like the tilting screen (I can put it down on the train table and watch stuff rather than having to hold it for an hour).
    3. I think it’s a better looking phone (looks do count to a degree for me and that just my personal opinion in the end)
    4. XDA support!

XDA support has been very useful as I now have FM radio on my Touch Pro 2 thanks to them (the touch pro 2 has FM radio but isn’t shipped with the app – dunno why).

Both look like great phones though – that’s why Windows Mobile is nice, it’s not one size fits all.

Granted, HTC devices have the benefit of XDA, which is probably the largest Windows Mobile Support Community (and PPC Geeks for cdma devices), but the Omnia has several growing communities too. Just check out the Omnia sub-forum on Modaco, and you will see that it is very active. They already have tons of roms with windows 6.5 just like the htc communities.

I've got an omnia 1 and it has way better specs than the touch pro 1 but the touch pro 1 is better, it just feels better. Touch flow will kick TouchWiz his ass anytime. and most important the smasung omnia 1 and 2 are slow it might have a faster CPU but its slow real slow. HTC also scores in teh area's where you use the smartphonme for its no a camera or something like that, so who cares about all the colors you screen has. You want to type messege real fast, fast internet and a good speaker phone thats whats important for a phone if you ask me ;)

For me y i would prefer Omnia Pro over TP2

Omnia Pro has dedicated task switcher, a key on the left to switch between your Work and Life profiles.

Buttons assigned for messages, calendar, notes and the phone search function.

Much superior video support (even though DivX support out of the box, CorePlayer & TCPMP plays videos with much lesser skipped frames), the TP2 still has the Processor for which they don't provide proper graphics driver.

An app to overclock the phone processor (CPU frequency settings – High, Normal, Low and Auto).
Evry day usability very smooth. I've experienced it already with Diamond & Omnia. Omnia way better than Diamond in daily usability, even with Spb Mobile Shell 3.5 installed. Response is excellent. Note: Omnia has less RAM than Diamond.

1 GB internal mem, i can install all the aps in internal memory.

Rest of the features i'll find out l8tr.

The 3,5mm port, the AMOLED Display, the better CPU AND 100 € (at least in Germany) cheaper than the HTC made my decision.

Biggest drawback for me: no XDA Support :(

The Samsung Omnia pro is definitely better than the HTC… I used to own a TytN2 and HTC never released decent graphical drivers for it, that's really a shame; I'll never buy HTC devices again – especially when they are becoming so inferior to the direct competitors.
