New HTC WIFI Router software makes WMWifiRouter obsolete

wifirouter wifirouter2 wifirouter3 wifirouter4

You have just received news of a new piece of HTC software which is likely to make Windows Mobile users pretty happy indeed.  The app, WI-FI Router, does just that –turns your phone into a WIFI Router, and seems to me to be one of the best and simplest implementations of the idea.

The cab, which can be downloaded from this post by Noonski here, does not create a shortcut, but the app can be found under \windows\CMInternetsharing.exe.  Once a shortcut is created under \Windows\Start Menu\Programs, the worst part is over.

Now one simply need to start the app, set a WIFI WEP key, click start and connect from your computer. No further setup seems necessary at all. In essence it does the same job as the $29.99 WMWIFIRouter, and much simpler and of course cheaper.  I have a feeling this app will be a standard on most WM phones over the next few months.

See the XDA-Developer thread for more info.

    Very Cool
I have it installed and running but my laptop can’t find it (the wifi signal)

  • There should be a Control Panel entry to over come the lack of a Shortcut ;)

  • Great job!:

Why I can’t run on my HTC Diamond ? My screen is short to this app, and I can’t slide to down ?

Is this more desirable than using Internet Sharing over Bluetooth?

Yes, in that speeds are faster, and range is greater, and more devices (such as ipod touches) can participate.

WMWifiRouter will become obsolete ONLY on HTC devices and HTC ROMs. Otherwise, Samsung, LG, ASUS, Garmin etc. will still provide a viable market for the sale of WMWifiRouter.

…only on HTC devices? You do realize that HTC devices are only the most popular Windows Mobile phones…

I don’t understand why HTC’s would be more popular.
Because when i compared my Omnia to the HTC, i got much more out of it, it was faster, smaller, better on battery, and had more features and yet was cheaper. EVen though i had Samsung as well as Motos, it offered me far more bang for my buck than HTC did and it didn’t have the glitches that the HTCs had.

Sorry, but it wouldn´t work on my SE Xperia … :(
Did anyone have an idea how it works with other WM-Smarthphones such as HTC?

    Thanks

A big problem I see with this as a WMWifiRoouter killer is that its lacking most of the features of WMWifiRouter. Take a look at the site WMWifiRouter.com there is many more ways of delivering the tasty tethering goodness as well as using phone as wifi card for PC and turning PC into wifi AP via phone.

This looks like a great option if you can connect your computer / laptop via WiFi, but it’s not going to completely replace WMWifiRouter (until they add USB options). My DSL at home was out for 3 days last week and if not for the USB connection method in WMWifiRouter I would not have been able to get online with my desktop computer. Plus using the USB connection method you can charge (or at least supplement) the battery while being used, I had been connecting my laptop at work using Wifi but my battery would die VERY quickly, not to mention my phone would overheat.

Windows Mobile supports USB and Bluetooth sharing out of the box, it is only missing WiFi sharing which this adds. If you don’t have USB or Bluetooth sharing, your carrier removed it from your ROM but you can freely add it back in via a cab file. Using the built in sharing and this sharing utility, you have all 3 methods for free.

    Gotcha. Thanks!!!

And I suppose connecting on your laptop would be automatic instead of connecting through Bluetooth PAN.

  • WEP?! Might as well not even set a password. WEP was cracked forever ago. Anything less than WPA-PSK is useless.

On htc Touch Pro, which has a 480×640 resolution screen. It cannot display the entire application screen, thus the soft-key “Start” cannot be pressed to start the program. I suppose this program is designed for those device that has a longer screen resolution, such as 480×800, etc. like the htc Touch HD.

Must disagree with the line WMPoweruser, amongst other blogs have taken. Bit much, to call WMWiFiRouter ‘obsolete’. It all goes back to getting something free and then disparaging a person who has to make a living and is charging for a unique piece of software.

Surur, mind giving us some apps for free from your shop? If not, then don’t present your opinion as fact. Thank you.

    Nuke1,

As a point of fact, the “author” of WMWiFiRouter worked with the XDA-Dev community-at-large to find a way to share a phone’s 3G connection over WiFi for free. St no point in time did anyone involved in the project consent to their contributions being closed and sold for profit. Yet, after version 0.91, the “author” (I use that term in its loosest sense) clammed up, pulled all downloads of the free versions, and all of the sudden, what should appear, but a paid program from him that does exactly what people worked to make possible for free?

I support HTC in this, and I hope they destroy his business model.

so do you need tethering enable or is this something that can share the internet and get away from paying AT&T $60/month for tethering?

i think it is FREE..if i connect my phone thru bleutooth dun,and open ie. or firefox it will redirect me to a page telling me to sign up for tethering and ask if i want to sign up…when i connect thru the wifi router its good to go and doesnt redirect me..this seems to good to be true so i wont be sure its free till i get my bill in the mail..i was gonna buy the tethering pacage for 30 a month with only 5gbs so if this is free it will be pretty SWEET!!

This WMWiFiRouter application was a bit difficult to install on my HTC Diamond 2, but after a reboot the icon suddently appeared in Settings under section Connections. The router works fine for me, but I can't save my own definitions of name and WEP-key. They are set back to default-values when I reopen the application.

At last I can't find an option for shutting WMWiFiRouter off. The only way is to open task manager and shut down WMWiFiRouter there.

In WMWIFIRouter, didn't you notice the big red power button on the mains screen to shut it down? Or "options->exit" ??
If you kill it in task manager, it isn't able to reset settings back to normal before it exits

hahah love it and works excellent and using my phone 3G connection makes it more faster than other public wifi stores like Borders bookstores and other public wifi. Also my wifi is more secure than using those free public wifi places. Iphone, Droid or android can't even do this. Windows Mobile Wins again. :-)
