HTC Leo actually HTC Firestone – has capacitive screen after all
We have seen a lot of conflicting rumours about the HTC Leo, and the latest one does little but add fuel to the fire. The ai.rs blog claims to have the full specs of the HTC Leo, and the device is a corker, with a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, 4.3 inch capacitive screen and a whole 320 megabytes of RAM.
We have also heard independent reports that the device will also feature a compass, making it the device with the specs to beat this year at least.

If the specs are correct, this thing is going to be huge.
But if it really features a flash and a compass, I’ll be the first one in line to buy one.

By the way: Either the specs are wrong or the Leo is not the phone on the picture.
The screen is only 4.0-4.1″ (if you resize the picture according to the specs) and there’s no flash on the back.

Yeah so the specs don’t match the picture, but the pic looks a lot like HTC’s last-gen industrial design (e.g. Touch Diamond) anyway, so could be off.
Also, if the screen is 4.3″, it’d have to have a pretty small bezel. The dimensions suggest it’s noticeably smaller than the Toshiba TG01, which has a 4.1″ screen.

Yes, I also think that there is something very wrong with the specs. HTC firestone was meant to have a 3.6 inch screen. You just can’t fit in 4.3 inch screen … Otherwise such a phone (even with 3.x inch screen) would be my dream for this year

Well, almost– those specs (pasted below) also include 1 GB of flash, with 512 MB of fast flash, whereas this has only 512 MB total.

It has Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, and the MS BT stack should be supported. Interestingly, for the Touch Pro 2 (and only TP2, not TD2), HTC for some reason switched from its usual combo of Texas Instruments BT chip/MS stack to a Broadcom BT chip with the Widcomm stack, which is much more fully-featured than the MS stack. But I presume it could run the MS stack if needed.
Also interesting is that the CSR BlueCore BT chip recommended by MS (if these specs are real) is the chip Apple uses in the iPhone/3G. I don’t think any mainstream WM phone has used this series (though there was a Mio phone with a BlueCore 4 back in 2007).
These Leo specs should meet the accelerometer requirement too, as it has a 3-axis accelerometer, and the sensor in the Touch Diamond is rated at 100 Hz and 1.22mg resolution, so presumably this would be similar.
That said, it might not actually deliver that kind of performance, as I came across some posts on Android dev forums about the sensor in the G1 (AKM AK8976A – 3-axis accelerometer + digital compass) being very inconsistent, with sampling rates varying from 5-125 Hz and a high degree of error, thus requiring additional processing in apps (Kalman filters, etc.) to clean up the input data.
This is basically an issue only because, just like on the iPhone, people are building all sorts of interesting apps using accelerometers on Android, beyond just screen rotation and shaking, whereas WM devs haven’t dug too deeply into accelerometers yet- presumably due to the lack of a built-in sensor API (which won’t be fixed until WM7).

I should clarify the last point– there are many WM apps up on XDA-Devs with accelerometer support (like the ones listed here: http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=1320), but there are far more on other platforms due to the ease of integrating the functionality into apps (with API support).

On most counts, yes. A link would be helpful though.
If the phone dimensions are smaller than the Toshiba, then and only then will I get this phone. 4.3in otherwise is quite frankly ridiculous. I don’t know what HTC is thinking. My cousin had a Touch HD and he always complained that it was a tad large and consequently bulky in his pocket. I thought the Toshiba TG01 (with a 4.1in screen) would be a nightmare and then HTC comes up with this.
Really, I do hope it is smaller than the Toshiba.

OK, after having checked like rad did before me (thanks!), the Toshiba and Leo respectively have:
129 x 70 x 9.9 mm – Toshiba TG01
121 x 67 x 11 mm – HTC Leo/Firestone
In other words, the Leo is significantly smaller with a large screen at the expense of having about 2mm thickness.
Sounds perfect!

Tbh, they’d be shooting themselves in the foot by lacking such an obvious advantage of the Snapdragon processor. This seems like their flagship device, so it only makes sense, considering that 4.3in screen and the ample room around the side of the handset.
This thing is thinner than my Diamond though!

Oh sorry, for some reason I took your comment to be 720p video decoding ability. Tbh, I would be satisfied with VGA (DVD/640×480) recording @ 30FPS on MP4 format. Like the Nokias on the market. Anything above would be a bonus, like the Sammy Omnia II’s D1 (720×480) resolution recording.
As for 720p video decoding, I’m sure a lot of people would buy this over the Toshiba with this distinct and obvious advantage over the Tosh.
Anyone know if the connection would be ext-USB for the HDTV-out?
