New Windows Mobile 6.5 screenshots show iPhone-like text selection UI – means capacitive screens?

Another interesting article popped up on our Page 2 site today.  This one, by Ark_Mage2 shows Windows Mobile 6.5 build 2193, and while the main theme was that of large, easy to tap buttons and other UI elements, one screenshot in particular caught my attention.

This screen shows text being selected, and a floating window with a zoomed version of the text being shown.  The UI is very reminiscent (ignoring the lack of eye candy which I am sure MS will add later) of the iPhone’s solution for its lack of a stylus, and to me serves to further confirm the arrival of Windows Mobile 6.5 devices with capacitive screens.

    Good find.

OMG, please skin all the elements in ONE style. Why not a slightly transparent, slightly glossy box with rounded corners? That would fit the rest (soft-menus; elements found in contacts, file explorer etc).
    Nevertheless a welcome approach Microsoft!

Well, that’s winmo 7 :p These are early leaks anyway. I don’t think we’ll get everything we want with 6.5. Right now it should have more transition animations but I don’t think we’ll see windows mobile with system wide animations until 7.

Why do more finger friendly menus mean capacitive screens are coming? More finger friendly menus make all types of screens more finger friendly, including resistive screens.

Resistive screens dont need all these shenanigans to make precise selections.

Resistive screens do need these shenanigans if you’re using a finger and not a stylus, right? And if you’re trying to compete with the iPhone without the added cost of capacitive screens.

Capacitive/resistive, jeez.. so much speculation on such a trivial matter.

I just want to say… For the love of all things holy, I hope they do not encourage hardware manufacturers to dump the stylus just to be more “apple like.” That would be a sad, sad day. You can do a “capacitive” stylus. And I hope that any manufacturer that goes capacitive, for whatever reason, includes one.

Oh, makes since. i was wondering why capacitive screens too. So you guys are saying, our screens arent very accurate without a stylus so therefore they need to make 6.5 finger friendly and have it super easy to navigate. Very interesting, who thought 6.5 would come this far???
