Windows Mobile 6.5 build 23037 brings easily re-arrangeble start menu

Video courtesy of Youtube denizen Swulaki.

Some-one must have lit a serious fire under the Windows Mobile Dev team, as the progress from one Windows Mobile 6.5 build to the other seems pretty astounding.

The latest build, 23037 finally brings easy to re-arrange icons to the start menu, unlike the clunky “Move to top”  menu that popped up previously when you tapped and held a icon.  The animation also appears pretty nice also.

With a rate of progress like this all I can say is Keep it up Microsoft.

That feature has been here since somewhere in 2300X, though not in all builds.

  • I still find it funny that this is the first UI revision at all ever since the softkeybar was born in WM5 in 2005. Glad to see progress though. Keep it up. Now that everything is bigger, make them look nicer please. And remake comm manager, PIM apps, and control panel applets like wifi and connection manager. I still dont get what the whole "this connection connects to work/internet" deal is. Make it simple like desktop window's network manager.

WM2003 had a fairly similar UI, with PocketPC 2000 being the biggest difference…

Bear in mind this is still fairly early development, and I suspect it'll get pretty after it works (what's the point in pretty if it does nothing?). The WM default Comm Manager is crap, though most OEMs supplement it…

I'm sure MS are remaking a lot of things (and I hope they're doing media player as well as your list!), just be patient :p

True. I just wonder how much will get into 6.5r2 and how much will go into 7. At this point, what even is the purpose of 6.5r2?

I think 6.5.X and 7 are going to run side by side (though there may be another one instead of 6.5.1 given how far 7 has been pushed back) on different hardware levels, so I suspect everything will go in to 6.5.X.

Also, WM7 is essentially a rewrite, so all the core applications will have to be rewritten. There are currently WM7 builds around, though they're very alpha, and most current hardware can't run it anyway.

  • since it's said that the real touch friendly version of WM6.5 won't ship until next year all I can say is WM6.5 R2 is looking better with every new build

Hey, just to clarify, I have 23034.5.3.0 and I can arrange icons… So I dont think its something brought in from 23037…

Also, why does MS do this? Why not just release WM7 already :-/… 6.5 sucks…

Thery are based on entirely different versions of the underlying Windows CE. 6.5 is going to be "lighter weight" and 7 will be more like Vista/7 where it requires more horsepower. WM7's development is in progress, but there's more to do since it's a new underlying kernel and so on. Why complain? If 6.5's GUI is this good, imagine how 7 is going to look!

  • I'm not sure the pace has changed. 6.5 was a lot of under-the-hood stuff. 6.5.1 is more cosmetic, as they've stated all along.

I'm not complaining I'm just saying development is a lot more than GUI. :-)

  • ask:

6.5 dosnt have a lot of under the hood changes. the major change is probably the scrolling engine. under the hood changes come in WM7
