HTC Touch Pro video out – shockingly good!
The HTC Touch Pro has TV-out functionality, which can only be accessed by buying a special cable. This probably means most buyers will never be aware how good this feature really is, and how well HTC has implemented it.
Fortuanately sub69 from xda-developers.com has put up a post describing in pictures how well this function really works.
To use the video out you need this cable. When you plug it in you get the option to choose between NTSC and PAL. The device also automatically rotate to landscape mode.

A shortcut screen then pops up, giving you quick access to applications which benefit particularly from the bigger screen, such as Powerpoint Mobile for presentations and the Youtube player.

More after the break.
The applications display particularly well on screen, and where the UI is designed for portrait, like the Youtube player, the device rotates to portrait automatically.

The Pictures and Video viewer.

A photo displayed on screen.

A movie being played in Coreplayer. The 700 Mb Divx movie apparently plays perfectly using DirectDraw, with no perceptible slow down.

Opera Mobile 9.5 on the big screen. Pretty good.

Logmein Remote Desktop displayed on the big screen.

Logmein zoomed in.

sub69 also reports when receiving a phone call the phone is placed in Speakerphone mode, and the audio automatically gets routed through the TV. A potential issue is that the screen stays lit all the time when the video cable is plugged in, making an extra power input essential when watching a movie for example.
Potential usage scenarios would be displaying movies while traveling on a hotel TV, similarly displaying video from Slingbox on a bigger screen, Powerpoint presentations of course, and showing photos to the family on a big screen.
The video-out cable is available on Expansys for £16.99.

what could be good about analaog video output these days? It has even lower resolution than Diamond’s native 640×480. You can use it to see photos in very low quality or watch videos all the same but I doubt that you could really work with Opera as small font won’t be legible at all. Maybe some sites with big pictures and text if you need them

As you suggested, putting your video on a big screen, putting photos or presentations on a big screen etc. I think it would be pretty useful to the right person.

I guess I’m gonna use it with myvu. (http://www.myvu.com/)
can someone confirm if it works?
[Reply]
I dont see why it wont work with those video glasses (the work with NTSC and PAL, and so do the glasses) but I am not sure what connector the myvu uses. Their site is very light on info, and most of the products seemed designed for the iPod.

I received the cabe roday. I thought it worked great. The only disappointment I had was that the TV would not play the video, only the audio worked. I have Sprint. Maybe they are blocking TV video. Does anyone know how to get the TV feature to display the video? If it is beng blocked, there must be a way to chnage a setting.
Thanks

I had the same problem and was disappointed by that as well. Otherwise, the cable worked great. If you find a way around that problem, let me know.

Is TV-out a supported feature on the CDMA HTC Touch Pro? If so, you need to complain directly to Sprint/HTC.

Hey Nelson,
Where did you buy your cable..I can’t find it anywhere!
Thanks

I got my cable at http://www.expansys-usa.com. Again, if any one knows how to get the TV feed to work please post it to this forum. The TV feed audio passes but not the video, otherwise the cable works great for the games, weather, GPS, etc.

Expansys is a not too good about delivering their stuff. I paid for this same cable 4 months ago and have been nagging them ever since to deliver the goods or refund my $

I noticed in the manual that came on the DVD, that it will not work with Sprint TV
>The Video Out feature cannot be used with Sprint TV.
When you plug in the Video Out cable accessory to your device, you will not be able to play music files from
the TouchFLO 3D Sprint Music tab.
• It is recommended that you use an audio accessory (not the Video Out cable accessory) such as the wired headset when you want to listen to music on your device.

I just got a tv-out adapter from ebay that actually has a few other functions and an extra RCA cable. WORKS AWESOME. At first I thought the audio was crap but then read the instructions and found out that you should turn your volume on the phone volume all the way up and do any adjusting of the volume on the tv.
I just came here to compare the quality of the picture and I’d have to say the ebay super-adapter (forgot what it was called exactly) that I bought seems to have a somewhat better picture (and no vertical lines like displayed in first pic above) …but that could just be from different TV’s or maybe something else. The built-in microphone amp on this thing is seriously powerful too…although in some cases it picked up TOO well and people on the other line would ask about stuff that was going on in the room, such as a TV playing quitely or dog barking way off in the distance. The only problem with it is it’s pricey, at about double the cost of the TV only cables. I’d still recommend it FWIW.

I am sure our readers would appreciate a product name or link?
[Reply]
I thought I posted it here but maybe not..
I found it through the website of http://www.watchmystuffplease.com which apparently is just a link back to ebay. The adapter was called “super-multi-adapter” for touch pro. I don’t normally make recommendations, but I suppose anyone can just read the feedback on ebay.

Or maybe it’s better to do without any wires. There should exist some devices attachable to the phone and to TV and so providing wireless job. The question is “where”
[Reply]
In picture 7 above, in which you show the opera browser, is the smaller black body text on the page readable, or not? Also, same question for the remote desktop session.
Thanks

I tried to order that cable from Cablesmith on ebay but all I got was the confirmation that PayPal paid him. Nothing after that. No communication, no response to emails, and obviously no cable. Filed dispute with PayPal and keeping the details up to date on http://www.myspace.com/ebayscammed

I too had problem with cablesmith. I sent four emails with no response. Even warned him of action I will take, he kept silence. Tried to call him, nobody picked the phone. However, after taking the dispute to paypal and claiming my money back, paypal followed and the guy sent cable within two weeks.

The one I got from cablesmith worked great for me. He had a close family member pass away and just didn't take care of business stuff for a couple of weeks. When I finally got the device I noticed it seemed to give an audible hum on the TV, but I read the instructions provided and was able to take care of it by putting the volume on the phone all the way up with the TV volume down a bit. All functions work perfectly as advertised.

I know the tv-out cable is all cracked up to be..well atleast to me since dont got internet @ home so its perfect to just have it on my tv. But how do i set up dat youtube application? been looking for it!!!

i just won a touch pro on ebay, cant wait to get the cable and try this out – id love to get the HD2 but its way too much money. HTC really knows how to make tech-savy phones – now its just a matter of choosing android2.0 over windows mobile 7… im too much of a windows mobile fan to give up the OS

I had the HTC Fuze, now I got the Pure. The TV out app does not come with the HTC Pure. I really would like to get it. Any thoughts?
