Solopalmari are in the process of publishing detailed reviews of the HTC HD2, and in the process have published the first pictures and video taken by the 5 megapixel camera.
They note while they were not blown away with the quality, it was broadly in line with that of HTC’s other 5 megapixel cameras.
Here is the video example:

HTC devices are known for shaky-video and poor camera quality. The first models to receive anything above an average rating would be the Diamond and TP2.

Ive got a Nokia N95 8GB here and the pictures are no better than this, so i fail to see why these are 'even worse than expected'.

Don't know how about N95, but even the old N82 performs MUCH better than this. Such photo results simply don't suit Leo at all.

The standard N95-1 picture and video quality is much better than this, although the pictures do suffer from over-compression. The N95 8GB doesn't have a lens cover, but I thought that it should still look pretty good unless the lens is completely scratched to bits.
Cameras have been the biggest let-down on HTC devices for me.
And czbird, the N82 does take even better pictures especially in low light conditions with the xenon flash.

The camera quality is better than previous devices, but its still awful with all that shake. Come on HTC, you can make everyother part of your devices work fine, but why make such bad cameras?

The pics look just horrible. If this is how they look with the final software, then the phone could just as well have no camera at all. I don't get it, what's the point of spending developer resources on introducing millions of camera options and optimising the software, and then the end result looks like this? The quality is just unaccetable.

If you call this unacceptable, then pictures from other devices must be waaaay better then this. I've never seen a phone with a great camera (compared to a real one) çause a phone is just not suited to have one. In my opinion the pictures are acceptable.
Why don't you people buy a real camera?

Try a SonyEricsson Satio for the same price, if not inferior, and then speak. HTC is bad with cameras, it's not a new thing and it's not a secret.

They dont look that bad to me. A bit out of focus i guess. I suppose compared to some of the pictures i have from my old N95 8GB they arent so good, but its hard to compare without side-by-side comparison of the same shot. The video is a little shakey, but looks clear and sharp, ive seen much much worse.

really?
all of this over a camera!? a cell phone camera at that!?
i agree with LTB, buy a real camera!

I watch the video and frame rate was 500 !! WTF..
However, the phone lacks anti-shake feature but the video looks decent

I wonder if you guys would complain about the poor call quality on a Nikon…
[Reply]
Hmm, I guess u will get better quality with the final rom, in most cases software changement improves the quality!
So lets hope that with the final rom the quality becomes better

With these results, you can't transform shit in gold. That's for sure.

The quality looks fine to me. I only use my camera for taking pictures of notes or signs and things i need to read later. If i wanted to take a decent picture of something i wouldn't use a phone anyway. same for video.

You guys just takin' about the camera >>> maybe the camera is bad , but what about the divice ??? i think its great , don't u????? and better than iphone 3gs
[Reply]
Yeah, but people expect more than that, its no longer about it just being a phone, and that big lovelly screen may be all ok, but those pics gonna look shit on it.

if these pictures represent the final quality of the camera, I will definitely NOT spend 600€ for only a bigger screen and a faster (hence more battery-consuming) processor… For a lesser price the Samsung Omnia 2 or Omnia Pro seem to be a much better choice….
What a shame…..

Seems like we have a winnnnner. Although I love the thin HD2, I'm not sure I can live with such a crappy camera :S
I use my phone as a camera A LOT, when im out with friends or whatever, just taking spontaneous pics…hmm
N900 has a good OS & UI & Hardware…it's thicker but it has a physical keyboard…
I would advice you all to check it out profoundly.
