Microsoft MyPhone vs Apple’s MobileMe

Microsoft’s Myphone service may be the best part of the introduction of Windows Mobile 6.5, and its worth seeing how it stacks up to its main competitor.

As can be seen from the table above, MyPhone measures up pretty well, and is certainly a lot cheaper (note the MyPhone cost is based on the 10% risk of losing your phone/year and needing to use the remote wipe service).  In addition the main gaps in the service can be plugged by other Microsoft offerings, such as push e-mail by using Windows Live and storage by using Microsoft Mesh.

Microsoft would however have a more compelling service if it integrated all its offerings, and hopefully this is set to happen in the near future.

At present however the service is pretty good already, with no significant negatives to using it, so I urge anyone who has an unlimited data plan to install the software.

Read more about MyPhone (which works on WM 6.1 also) here.

Is there any way Microsoft could improve MyPhone (besides the obvious of increasing storage)?  Let us know in the comments below.

on my xperia x1 running 6.1 i tried to use the premium features as they have a free trail. so i turned my x1 into sleep (standbye) and went to the options on my pc. there is a text before it lets u use the functions where they send a sms to the phone (invisible sms) and the phone sends one back. but it did not work, the phone never came on like the was something happening (not sure if it does when getting these invisible sms) and there pc said it could not connect to the handset, giving options like the phone is turned off or battery has run out etc, but the phone was on and fine. so maybe these functions dont work on 6.1 or does not work on all handsets.

    ps. im in the uk

Like you said, if MS would stop acting like it was 15 different companies, and finally get its act together… then MyPhone/Hotmail/Mesh would compete better. Most lay people know about Apple Me. Just about everyone knows about Hotmail. What does MS do to introduce its new products? They start up separate sites, that don't link together, and don't offer a common installer. So of course the average lay person has no idea what Mesh is, nor do they have any idea what MyPhone is (unless they bought a 6.5 handset with the icon in the Start menu, and were able to figure it out from there). And that in my opinion is the main failing of Myphone/Hotmail/Mesh. (That and the lack of calender syncing…but I guess if you are already using 3 different services to keep your cloud data, whats the harm in adding Google's free exchange calender to the mix.)

you don't know MSFT at all, they will not treat the company as if it is one, because they gained their sucess by treating each department as if it were a seperate company/entity. So asking them to unify everything is like asking them to through away what has made and if keeping them sucessful in the marketplace.

Well that strategy may have worked in the past, but this day in age, when people expect all their gadgets and software to interact seamlessly with each other, that strategy is doomed for failure. It is the reason Zune and Windows Media Player (both on the PC and on the mobile devices) are so disparate from one another, and just another reason well integrated packages like the iPhone seem so much better.

You have to remember that a lot of the features of 6.5 appear very experimental. MS doesn't have too much experience with this sort of thing and 6.5 is the perfect opportunity to sort it all out. I have a hunch that 7 will have much more connectivity options. It would also make sense for them to gradually update and upgrade their services over the next year.

My main issue with myphone is that about 90% of my storage space has been taken by random program documents and images. this makes it totally useless. i couldn't find any obvious way of selecting specifically which folders it synced. I keep almost all my data on the storage card by the way.

Yeah– until MyPhone works with Mesh and syncs with Outlook, it's pretty useless for me (and for the average consumer, quite confusing).

It would be good if notes were backed up and editable online. Also it would be nice if it archived files to mesh, rather than integrated mesh, which I don't think would work well with the context of storing contacts and tasks. Email is covered by live mail, but it's odd that the calendar entries aren't also synced with live, but are stored on MyPhone, choice in this matter would be good as not everyone uses live mail.
