Flashing Your First ROM survival Tool

Flashing your phone with a new ROM is something a lot of use power users do to get a faster, smoother and bloat free phone. The choice of flashing it is easily done by weighing the options:- risk your phone to have an all around better device or stick with your boring old phone that doesn’t ever change, and most likely has a lot of bloat ware from your carrier.

Below are the steps one need to go through to get yourself and your phone ready to flash and see both safely through the process.

Choosing the perfect ROM

This step is easy for the non HTC WM phone owners, but if your phone is an HTC phone then this could be a little challenging. Many competing ROM’s exist, and to chose between them one usually need to read a number of threads and decide by the comments which ones appear to work best. The key to remember is that you do not need to commit to only one – its easy to try many and then device which is the most suitable for you.

Reading The Directions

Most sections gives you a step by step direction on how to flash your phone. Usually following these instructions to the word will see you flashing your device reliably and safely.

Downloading the files

Most ROM’s this days are either in Zip or RAR format. To un-RAR a file all you need is winzip or any application you can use to view rar file. For zip files the built-in Windows function is fine. When you unpack it drag and drop the file to your desktop (if your using an HTC device that only has the Wrapper and the Img) or if the direction says different, follow those.

Backup

Well this is important if you want all your files back. You might need your doc’s then copy them to your memory card or computer. You might need your Massages us PIM backup for all your contact and text massages. If you just want to back up your contact, your calender, your main files and notes then just go with active sync.

Connecting the phone & Syncing it

This part is easy. Open Activesync, connect your device, have your screen on and proceed to sync it.

Get in Your Mind Right

At this point it is important is stop worrying, tell yourself “its going to be fine, once im done I will love my phone even more” and get on with it. A calm demeanor will see you less likely to brick your phone through panicky mistakes.

Flash that Badboy

Take a deep breath, have some Speed metal going in the back and Hit the Start Bottom and in 2-10min your phone will come out better than ever.

Restore

This one is the Easy part, Restore all your files.

I hope this can help the Flash phobic people

Remember flashing your ROM usually invalidates your warranty and can result in a completely unrecoverable device. Please only flash at your own risk.

Wow I thought I´d never ever see XP and the default wallpaper again. I feel somewhat sick now. Get 7 dude, please. But apart from that, nice idea!

I was going to get a new computer all around, i have 7, but not on this computer, its easier than 7 to flash a rom, and 7 is only $7 for my brother, so i asked him to get me a copy for this computer

Forgot something. You could use a tool for recording video directly on the screen next time. Also your voice is not well understandable. And because of that it might actually miss the effect you intend it to have: Bring newbies to flashing. If somebody sees that he probably won´t be this encouraged…

True, but i wanted to show how the phone looks too, because i do have a screen recording tool. I know, i have to try a little bit more to not be soo tired when im doing a Video :) but thanks for the suggestions, i always welcome that

Hey Mr Jr., thanks for the post, I'm sure it will help someone. I remember when I flashed my first ROM, that was a bit scary :) .

I noticed you never mentioned that there may be the need to use a hard SPL before the first flash. I think it's an important bit of info for first time ROM flashers.

I hope you don't take offense to my next suggestion (that's not my intent at all –I really appreciate your contributions here–). I think if you took the time to proofread and spell check your posts it would make them so much more enjoyable to read and they would look more professional.

Once again, thanks for the great post. Had I seen something like this about a year ago, it would definitely have eased my fears!

Thanks ill keep that in mind, all suggestions are always welcome, well all nicely spoken suggestions anyways. Also not all Wm phones use Hardspl thats why i said fallow the directions given to you by the source of the ROM

Great to see more editorial content rather than just news posts — keep up the good work!

I always find backing up and restoring to be the worst parts of flashing, particularly reinstalling and reconfiguring apps. I've tried Sashimi but with quite a few of my commerical apps having custom prompts when installing and rebooting the device after install, it just hasn't worked out for me, unfortunately. Then they still need to be re-registered and configured (finding out where the config and registration information is stored can take quite a while and I have quite a high app-turnover rate).

Great to see im bringing in some change, and change that people like, i will be doing more stuff like this and the Admin will be doing more news and things in that area. Well there is a all in one installer that takes me 4min to install everything back to the way it was before i flashed it, but it isnt released yet, only curtain ROM's have it.

    [Reply]

  • nice work! I wish you'd covered the flashing part a bit more. The hardSPL, etc…

    [Reply]

    WMPerson Reply:

Yes, I will remake this when i get a better camera and a tripod. Also HardSPL isnt for all phones, thats mainly why i didnt go threw that, but ill keep your suggestions in mind for next time.

HardSPL/SoftSPL/USPL is for all HTC phones (for custom ROMs at least).

    [Reply]

    WMPerson Reply:

But not all WM phones are HTC, well just most of the good ones

    [Reply]

    l3v5y Reply:

The majority of them are, and the ones with the biggest following are HTC… Maybe you could do some kind of HTC "special" with HardSPL?

    WMPerson Reply:

Well im making a post to request things that people want to hear and want me to do, since the Admin is good at getting his news out there faster than me, so i will have that in 30min and you can post all your suggestions,
