HTC HD2 video codec support
A thread over at XDA-Developers caught my eye, so I decided to do some digging. The thread was concerning what formats would be supported by the HD2, and which would be hardware accelerated.
HTC state:
Video supported formats:
.wmv, .asf, .mp4, .3gp, .3g2, .m4v, .avi
Which some think may be misleading given the AVI support on previous devices.
In the ROM, there are two packages related to hardware accelerated graphics, DShow and mHubVO.
Judging by [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\DirectShow\Extensions], numerous formats will be at least partially hardware supported:
avi
m4a
m4v
mid
midi
rmi
mp3d
3gp
aac
awb
mp4
amr
mp3
with a few more [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Multimedia\WMPlayer\Extensions]
3gp
mp4
m4v
m4a
amr
awb
3g2
qcp
aac
avi
mid
midi
rmi
mp3d
being supported by Windows Media player.
Interestingly, the only codecs I found were for:
AAC
AMRNB Dec/Enc
AMRWB Dec
AudioFR
CCRender
ColorConversion
EVRC Dec
FltAE
FltFW
H263 Enc/Dec
H264 Dec
ID3
JPEG Dec/Emc
MJPEG Dec
MP4 (fr/fw)
MPEG4 Dec/Enc
QCELP Dec/Enc
A few of which I don’t recognise at all…
Does format support actually matter to those buying the HD2, or will you just grab a copy of Core Player or similar?

It's so easy to convert files anyway that i don't care. only having hardware acceleration for certain formats is a bit frustrating though.

MP4 is the one I'm thinking of going for. It's hardware accelerated in WMP and HTCAlbum, and is accelerated on my Touch Diamond as well..

Isn't AVI just a container format for other codecs to allow a generic way of synchronising audio and video rather than a format that can be accelerated itself?
So divx/mp4 video can be in an AVI along with mp3 audio, for example.

To be honest, formats and how they work isn't something I'm great with!
Older versions of HTCAlbum refused to play AVI files (no idea why) so it's nice that HTCAlbum thinks it can play them now!

Thanx l3v5y ! that's what I wanted to know.
As for why it matters with a CPU that fast; well, I assume if there's hardware acceleration for a codec, the battery will last longer playing it with H/W acceleration than when it's decoded with raw cpu power. Am I wrong ?

No, I'd expect that to be the case too. It's how some devices manage the very long music playtimes between charges.

Music playback isn't that taxing, and you turn the screen off… :p

From what I remember the Touch HD handles less than half the framerate on many hires videos, and I'm only talking 640×480 and the like.
Without hw acceleration there's no guarantee the HD2 will play these files without dropped frames or even stuttering.
And then there's the battery life, you don't want to have to take a spare battery with you just to watch a movie.
CorePlayer still has no hw acceleration on Qualcomm even though they've been saying for at least a year that they were 'working on it, can't say too much, NDA's don'tcha know…'
CorePLayer v2 apparently adds DirectShow, at long last, so at least what's accelerated in WMP will also be accelerated in CorePlayer, which hasn't been the case to date. Although they seem to be having trouble getting v2 out of the door.

I'm going with coreplayer or get the codec pack for WMP…..I usually go with core any way because I can equalise it the way I want my music to sound, and videos are much smoother with it too
