Virgin HTC HD2 made official
![]()
We have already posted about this handset showing up on Virgin Mobile, and then thought it was unusual. It turns out the HCT HD2 is the first HTC handset to be carried by Virgin Mobile, and on a very compelling package also.
The handset is free on a £30/month 24 month contract and comes with 800 minutes and , free text messages and unlimited data with a 3GB fair use cap. This certainly much more generous than Vodafone for example, with heir 500 MB fair use cap.
As an added bonus, existing Virgin Media customers with home services such as broadband and TV will also get two months free, as well as unlimited calls to other Virgin Mobiles.

Virgin Media Brings Mobile Entertainment to Life with HTC
- New partnership with HTC sees HTC HD2 kick start range of high-end data-enabled handsets
- Two months free and unlimited calls to other Virgin Mobiles exclusively for Virgin Media customers
Virgin Media has today announced a new UK partnership with HTC Corp., a leading smartphone designer, which will see the cutting-edge HTC HD2 smartphone added to its range of handsets. The HTC HD2 is the first HTC branded phone to be made available through Virgin Media, and marks the start of an expanding range of high-end handsets perfect for consumers looking for the best possible mobile internet and entertainment experience on the go.
The HTC HD2 is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, making it perfect for enjoying high-quality video and music on the move. Featuring a massive 4.3 inch touch screen with a 480×800 high resolution display, the HD2’s sharp and ultra-responsive capacitive screen brings web pages and other content to life with incredible clarity and control.
The Windows Mobile based HD2 also features ‘HTC Sense’ – HTC’s unique design philosophy that delivers a mobile experience that is focused squarely on the user. The HTC HD2 features popular social networking applications, such as Facebook and Twitter, and enables users to expand its functionality with a wide range of applications from Windows Marketplace. At just 11mm thin, the slim HD2 also houses a 5 megapixel camera with a dual LED flash.
Jonathan Kini, director of mobile at Virgin Media said, “The HTC HD2 is a stunning handset and the first-ever HTC-branded phone ranged by Virgin Media. Its launch kick starts a new range of high-end handsets coming to Virgin Media, perfect for mobile internet, social networking and entertainment on the go. We are delighted to be able to offer the HD2 through one of the best and most competitive deals in the market.”
Jon French, executive director of HTC UK, Ireland and South Africa, said, “HTC is known for producing great phones that offer consumers a unique mobile experience. Our close relationship with Virgin Media continues to grow, and we are pleased to be able to help it to kick off the New Year with such a fantastic deal.”

I don’t associate Virgin Mobile with high-end smartphones, but I may have been mistaken. Coolsmartphone has just noticed the premier Windows Mobile smartphone on the network, and at pretty reasonable prices also.
Virgin Mobile seems to be the only network still offering 12 month contracts, and even the 18 month contracts are run cheaper than O2’s for the same minutes and period.

HTC HD2 now available online from O2 UK
According to Coolsmartphone the HTC HD2 has taken a while to become available online on O2, but if you want to pick one up now, you can certainly pop over there and give it a try.
The handset has been in extremely short supply, so the recent arrival may indicate new shipments being received by retailers.
The HTC HD2 is available from free to £250 on 18 and 24 month plans, with likely the best plan being the 400 minute £30 per month 18 month plan with an inclusive unlimited internet bolt-on with the handset costing £150.

Confirmed – Xperia X2 officially dropped by Vodafone
We have now received an official confirmation from a Sony Ericsson spokesperson that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, which was meant to be exclusive to Vodafone UK, has now been officially dropped.
The statement reads as follows:
Sony Ericsson can confirm that the X2 will not be released by Vodafone in the UK. The delivery date of the product has slipped due to extended testing and the product, which was exclusive to Vodafone in the UK, no longer fits within their planned portfolio. The handset is available in other Sony Ericsson markets however. Sony Ericsson is disappointed not to make this phone available to consumers in the UK but in 2010 the company will be offering a number of innovative, stand-out products in the market.
While most of our readers will not miss the device, it is of note that at present there is no Windows Mobile phone with an 8 megapixel camera, and that the Xperia X2 corrected most of the deficiencies of the X1, meaning its loss will leave somewhat of a hole in the whole Windows Mobile ecosystem.
Given Sony Ericsson’s history with the X1 and X2, would our readers trust them with another handset? Let us know below.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 dropped by Vodafone
We have been able to confirm that the much delayed Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, which was meant to be exclusive to Vodafone UK, has now been officially dropped.
In an e-mail circulated internally yesterday, staff were told the handset will no longer be sold by the carrier.
This move is likely to be a nail in the coffin for the troubled handset, which has seen an ever lengthening route to market, and we will likely see any already manufactured stock being sold off by small dealers, as we have seen yesterday.
We will ping our Sony Ericsson rep for comment, but I think its relatively safe to say:
Xperia X2 – RIP 4-1-2010

Final word on HTC HD2 and Vodafone?
We have just been pinged by our HTC rep with this statement regarding the HTC HD2 and Vodafone UK:
Following its availability in November 2009, we have been extremely pleased by the strong sales and positive feedback from Vodafone about the HTC HD2. Vodafone’s strategy continues to be to provide the HD2 as part of its broad portfolio. The HD2 will continue to be available through Vodafone for consumer sales via www.vodafone.co.uk and for enterprise customers.
Looking at Vodafone’s site, the phone is certainly in their Business shop but its nowhere to be found on their consumer side, so this may not be the final word after all. I am sure many readers will however be happy that there is at least some route to ordering the phone on their favourite carrier.
