A Windows Phone 7 update coming *before* NoDo?

Chalk this one up to “You heard it here first”, but we have been tipped that there will be a minor update released in the next few days, around the 22nd. This update will not bring any new features but will supposedly pave the way for the NoDo update which will bring cut and paste.

We have no other info, but look forward to seeing this trial run happen before the big roll out in the second week of March.

Thanks Sylar for the tip.

That seems idiotic. My would Microsoft do this to themselves? everyones going to immediately think the updates coming out early, then be disappointed when they realize they got nothing from the update. There will be tons of bad press. Seriously Microsoft? a featureless update to pave the way from a future update is laughable.

      +1

It's actually the best option for them. It won't result in bad press as it's pretty obvious in the update notes what you're updating. Ultimately this will be a positive thing for Microsoft.

      1. They get to test out the update mechanism without worrying about breaking functionality. They can see how long users take to update etc.. Then be better prepared for the next update.

      2. They can say they released 'two updates in the space of a month'.. and hopefully keep them coming regularly in future with the things we saw this week like IE9 mobile.

3.They've stated when the update will be applied, we know it's coming in March so if an update comes up in the next few days you shouldn't be expecting it to be the full update.

      • wp7telefonai

Or maybe it will bring bug fixing and NoDo will bring features? :]

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brandon-Page/726586203 Brandon Page

        1. TEST? Are you mental? if you think that there not testing in house and/or this is an actual test then something is wrong with either you or Microsoft. Testing implies it could fail. If an update thats going out to every user globally and messes up phones in any way WP7 is done. game over.
        2. You really think they would make an update just to claim "'two updates in the space of a month"? Completely pointless claim.
        3. M$ just had a huge press conference at MWC, if they didn't mention an update then thats coming before the onces they announced somethings up.

        • GP007

How about you chill out and actually wait to see if this even happens or not. They updated the Zune software to fix something in the update process, it makes sense that a phone update could fix bugs and NOT have new features at all. Like all the Service Packs for Windows, you know.

If the update states it's fixing something then people don't care. MS pushed out test updates to dev phones before the RTM back in Nov as well, a few of them iirc, so this sorta thing isn't new.

        • innfinn

how about u just STFU… you dont know shit yet and your criticizing o.0

        • http://www.ztitch.com Ztitch Developer

I'm not sure why you're so worked up. A minor update to pave way for another update is not uncommon. Particularly, the Windows Update for Windows 7 (PC).

        • Bob

Still using "M$", eh? Way to show your true colors, a$$hat.

    • http://twitter.com/argenys @argenys

I guess you would rather the NoDo update brick your phone then?

    • Wayne

IMO, if it is a patch to pave the way for the upcoming patch, there should have something to be patched. Perhaps we should hear it straight from MS directly instead.

  • schiefersoft

    just rumours, useless information

  • Bya

SO COOL ! An update that brings nothing, that's supa-great !

    I can't wait now.

Please bring this update fast :p

    • tegra2

Didn't they call this no donuts because they didn't want small updates like android (Android Donut release added mutlitouch, cdma and some bug fixes.) Now they've got 2 updates that do what Donut did. Good job.

      • http://www.facebook.com/GilbertKarl Karl Gilbert

Apparently it was due to a meeting where someone was meant to bring donuts, yet forgot. So it was an in-joke! It was NOT meant to be a parody of the similarly named Android update.

  • Wayne

    Qn:
What if I did not install this "minor" update? Can I update NoDo directly when it is available?

  • Chris

No, it will instead send Agents of Black to your doorstep ;P

  • oslik

    This is DoNo update. ;)

  • mk_mk

    another rumor, I don't care

  • lkl

One way to find out, wait and see then comment about it. Where you got to go?

  • Lennard

NoDo will not only bring cut and paste but also a performance update and CDMA support.

and better qualcomm chipsets let's not forget that

That's like music to my ears.

You all are missing the point here. If carriers are holding up NoDo, then what Microsoft is doing is a preemptive strike. They are pushing an update ahead of Nodo so carriers can "hold" that but then NoDo comes out and contractually the carriers have to push it. Shrewd move by MS if this is the case.

    • oslik

Quite childish, but it may work.

      • rsg

        How is it childish?

If it gets the update to consumers faster, then Microsoft is doing the right thing.

        Unless I've missed the point.

    • LaMar Big-Slim Cowan

I like your thinking Joseph! Great way of looking at it, unlike others. :)

  • Sempai

Actually, if this is true it's very smart – it completely gets around the issue of carriers being able to say "No" to NoDo! They're only allowed to say no to a single release right? Meaning they have to agree to release the second? So what better way to force carriers to provide "the big one" by putting out a tiny "optional" one just before it?

    • Joseph Heath Wallis

if I'm right it is exactly the kind of FU I've been waiting for microsoft to send to the carriers.

  • http://twitter.com/WinPhoneJunkies @WinPhoneJunkies

I don't get carriers. Why in the hell would they not want a update to improve th WP7 they sell? It's stupid. I wish MS would make the hardware like Apple did. The Zune hardware was second to none.

    • http://twitter.com/counterblow @counterblow

they are control freaks with inadequacy issues….all they are is a dumb pipe but they think they should be more.

    • oslik

We do know nothing for sure. Things pretty often look very different at the end of the day. I can easily imagine 10 other scenarios. We just don't know. Trust No One! ;-)

    • Brianna

It's simple. Android updates have been bricking phones so carries don't trust updates.

    • skinnypig118

It's all about money. If they don't update their existing phones as often, it will force more people to buy newer handset with better features, simple as that.

  • http://twitter.com/EJ1024 @EJ1024

Like what I said before, 4G FIRST, BEFORE WP7, CARRIERS will block this updates for sure, they want to make sure they sell the crapdroids or the slow berry. I just hope this is for the best for current owners and future owners. COPY AND PASTE, I DONT NEED IT.

  • http://twitter.com/EJ1024 @EJ1024

I want to be able to send vids that's what i need.

  • MichelHolland

If you haven't been following Android upgrades. Carriers philosophy would be to hold off on the upgrade, so if users want the new OS, they will have to buy a new phone(came with new OS).
I like iPhone strategy and I hope MS will adapt that strategy as well.

  • Roblo

With all these comments shows you the frustrations of MSs Loyalist. It has the community divided on this shit. If this update doesn't work and get delayed all hell will break loose.

  • http://twitter.com/MaulerX @MaulerX

Everybody that has an Xbox knows that Microsoft often releases "preparatory" updates to get the system prepped for a major release. Historically speaking this is something they have always done so quite frankly I don't unterstand the vitriol in some of the comments. If it does happen we should be happy as that would be a sure sign that NoDo is deffinately coming.

  • http://www.facebook.com/patrickvand Patrick Van

every WP7 blog wants to be the first what's the big deal… i've heard like 8 different dates for the release and no one blog has been right. everyone with "insider tips" and "secret sources" come on now… its just someone guess. Jan 2011, First week Feb,Feb 7, Feb 8, Feb 11, Feb 22, First week March, March 8…

Face it no one knows, thats why its a RUMOR.

  • rsg

So they should've released NoDo first, and then forced the carrier to release if before the minor update.

  • http://www.jessejjohnsom.com jesse johnson

Pushing out NoDo will be highly scrutinized, this is a way to make sure future updates are fluid before hyping a risk.

  • T.L.

Microsoft should just name a date and stop with the stupid super secret Apple shit!!! Thats how you please customers….

  • Hades32

Seems logical. This is just normal procedure for Windows Operating Systems. There are always pre-updates for Service Packs for example.

  • http://twitter.com/gfelisberto @gfelisberto
