All of the next wave of Windows Phone 7 Mango devices will run Qualcomm processors

Qualcomm has let it be known that for the immediate future, all new Mango devices will still run on Qualcomm’s processors.

“Qualcomm has a long history of working closely with Microsoft and we continue to support the launches of new Windows Phones based on our Snapdragon processors. We are excited about this next Windows Phone Mango release that will leverage the synergy of our highly integrated second generation Snapdragon solution and Microsoft’s Windows Phone software,” said Steve Mollenkopf, executive vice president and group.

Working on a very closed and consistent platform has allowed Microsoft to wring performance out of the more than 2 year old Snapdragon processors which still beat dual core 1.4 Ghz devices running Android.

On the other hand having more chipset OEMS to chose from will give Windows Phone manufacturers more bargaining power and allow greater differentiation of devices around features and form factors, so in the long term Microsoft’s close partnership with Qualcomm is not sustainable.

ST-Ericsson has already said they expect to power a number of Nokia’s Windows Phone 7 handsets, most of which are coming next year.

“Working on a very closed and consistent platform has allowed Microsoft to wring performance out of the more than 2 year old Snapdragon processors which still beat dual core 1.4 Ghz devices running Android.”

It didn’t really. Sure, WP was a lot more fluid but that had nothing to do with the processor as such – simply the fact that Android was not optimized for an architecture. Show me an Android handset that can playback “real” HD video and I’ll show you a bunch of WP devices that can’t.

I get what you are saying, but I can’t help but feel like everything is a wang measuring contest in the world of Android.

At this point, is there really any practical value to having dual cores in a smartphone, other than to say “look how big my processor is” (or to throw more horsepower at an otherwise inefficient OS)?

Don’t underestimate the value of optimization of existing hardware. The XBOX and PS3 aren’t exactly cutting edge hardware these days, and the games coming out today look vastly superior to the ones released 4 years ago.

Pardon my confusion here, but if, as you state, 1Ghz WP7 ‘optimized’ does beat 1.4Ghz Dual-Core Android ‘unoptimized’ what point are you trying to make?

“Sure, WP was a lot more fluid but that had nothing to do with the processor as such – simply the fact that Android was not optimized for an architecture”
Yes, and android wasn’t optimised for these processors because it is aimed to work on such a wide variety of hardware. Hense Microsoft is getting a benefit, for time the being, from focusing on this narrow line of CPUs. Your basically agreeing with Sururs point here.

What’s that meant to mean? There’s plenty of andoid handsets that can’t either. Also not sure what this has to do with Qualcomm CPUs.

Well I’m not sure that having more chipset OEMs would be better, I think Microsoft is trying to ensure that we still get the same user experience on every windows phone, and if partnership with ST-ericsson is indeed coming eventually, they’re probably testing the processors right now. On a consumer level, I don’t see much of a difference between having one OEM and more than one though.

Yes, but manufacturers (like Nokia) tends to prefer to work on processors they know and for which they taylored their hardware componenents.

Having WinPhone running (optimized) on more platforms will help to get more windows phones on the market.

maybe, but then again, I was talking from the point of view of a consumer.

Stop peddling lies. Nothing in that quote even alludes to the fact that all new WP7 phones will have to run on Snapdragon.

why 2nd and not 3rd gen Snapdragons?

I really want an absolute high-end Windows Phone for godes sake. MS better make sure the OEMs deliver, I really would be pissed if we get inferior hardware again.

32 GB storage should be there, front facing camara, high resolution, good displays, 4G, gyroscope, NFC etc…

Regardless of whether I need it or not, its their responsibility to give consumers the choice. If I have dollars to burn for no reason, then I can live with it.

I’d rather they spend time optimising the OS than just chucking the fastest dual-core one in there. Who really needs all that power? I’d much rather have longer battery life.

what’s the point in using dual core processors???? ….. I prefer a ‘solo core’ instead of double….. ‘solo’ means double battery time….. and we want to carry our phones without going out with the charger in our pockets! ….. bring a solo core so we can have double battery timeeeee!!!!!
