amAze free turn by turn ad supported GPS navigation – the first location-based service that makes sense

Huawei has announced today that they will be embedding LocatioNet’s "amAze" GPS navigation service on new GPS-enabled mobile handsets.

The free satellite navigation system differentiates itself from its peers by offering turn by turn voice-guided GPS navigation while still being completely free to the user. Users will be able to view and navigate over detailed maps, high-resolution satellite imagery in over 200 large cities around the world, to view weather conditions, to search for points of interest, to search in local directories and more.

The software is funded by advertising and coupons appropriate to the users route and location that are displayed when the user plans his journey.

"We are very excited to be selected by Huawei as their navigation application partner," said Meir Dan, CEO of LocatioNet. "It is yet another step in the fast evolution of GPS navigation services on mobile phones, thanks to the integration of GPS receivers into the handsets. As part of this evolution, every mobile user can have wider access not only to pure navigation services but also to a vast amount of geographical data on a worldwide basis that is made available via the wireless network. There is no need to purchase expensive dedicated personal navigation devices (PND), and there is no need to periodically update the maps. Everything is conveniently available on the mobile handset anywhere, anytime and with the most updated content that is coming in real-time from the main service servers."

The service supports over 500 handsets with Java and Windows Mobile versions. No Android or iPhone version exists as yet.

The software, which downloads maps over the air, is pretty feature packed, featuring maps, satellite data and a hybrid view, and also allows low-data modes with arrows only.

The software is available to download directly to your Windows Mobile phone by visiting wap.amazegps.com.

These programs are always good until you lose cellular service then how do you navigate? No matter how its dressed up, there’s no substitute for a proper GPS app with maps onboard.

no subsitute really? so…tell me what its like for paying for new upgrades for maps? or just the idea of having to wait months to get upgraded map info on your phone (new streets, new businesses, POI etc). i’ve been using live search gps and google (kinda switch between the two) for the 2 years that i’ve had my tilt. and i can tell u that i’ve never ONCE lost cellular service. i think you’re trying to make a non issue…an issue.

plus…i love how having cellular based gps navigation can alert me to freeway closures and detours…i’m pretty darn sure tomtom and others don’t do that. literally, that one feature saved me an hour and a half of sitting on a closed freeway coming home from a friends house one nite.

oh yeah…and what does it take up…like 4GB of memory card space? i’m sorry…but there are many ways in which internet based gps does shine over the likes of tomtom and onboard maps. especially when u have apps like live search w/ can cache maps to the card.

Yes, TomTom unfortunately does not support traffic info nor HD traffic so again you’re right.

I don’t know what PK is talking about or if he’s just being sarcastic, but TomTom and many others DO support live traffic, closures, and detours. And they handle them much better than google maps or live maps ever could. You get what you pay for in this instance (that being said I haven’t used AmAze).

Also the SD card programs use less than 1GB typically.
