Analyst MIC predicts 80 million Windows Phones will be sold in 2012

While we have not given up hoping for significant growth in Windows Phone market share, we have reconciled ourselves to the idea that it will be a slow slog over many years. According to Taiwan’s Institute for Information Industry think tank Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) however Windows Phone 7 will win 13% market share in 2012, grabbing 79.82 million handset sales from a total of 614 million.

The growth it appears is expected to come primarily from RIM and Symbian, with RIM dropping to 8.6% market share. Android however is expected to increase from 46% to 50% market share, while iOS will grow to 19%.

The overall market is expected to grow 35.8% from 452 million smartphones in 2011 to 614 million in 2012. Much of the growth is expected to happen in the under $300 low-end segment of the market.

Yes. More countries are going to be reached by WP so the market share will increase. But it doesn’t mean we will see so much more WP phones in our street.

Microsoft is patient, but I think we all hope that Apollo phones will be able to fight head to head with the iPhone 5 and Android superphones.

I agree global market share could explode if tango is what we think it is. However us market share could still stagnate or increase by a much smaller amount depending on how many carriers push wp7 this year.

That would be awesome. Those wwho would say nope I would say think positively and help make it happen and lets see where we are at the end of 2012. Instead of only carping about windows phone isnt lets praise the progress first and then work on helping MS get closer to where it needs to be. Apollo should hopefully go a long ways toards getting MS to 13% marketshare if it comes out when MS says it will and if its a real advance in the os which its being touted to be.

I don’t even know if that would be logistically possible. They’d have to ramp up production quite heavily I think. I mean, after all these weeks of reports that the Lumia seems a top selling phone in Europe and WP is still below 1% in many of these markets.

It could happen, but it doesn’t seem to be based on anything we’ve seen so far. The percentages that have dropped from RIM and Symbian don’t seem to have come en masse to WP compared to Android and iPhone and I see no huge reason why it would change except a growing presence in the low-end market.
We’ll see. I just want them to sell enough to survive in the market!

Starting frow low numbers amazing growth percentages are easy to reach. Not so starting from 30-40% market share.

At the end of the day, who cares. As long as Microsoft and the hardware manufacturers keep doing what they are doing and produce for me, the best platform, so I may keep upgrading etc. I don’t care if Google and Apple have a larger market share, each to his own.

Analysts like this should not be put in charge of anything important for fear they’ll harm themselves or others. Windows Phone is not even hoped to support even dual-core phones before Q4, and even that looks iffy. Quad-core phones are shipping since last year with high-end graphics capabilities that rival the PS3, and there will be at least four different platforms with quad-core (and scores of different phones) in 2012. Dual-core is becoming a low-end smartphone.

WP7 is going to wade into this and take 13 percent market share with their single-core phone OS? How? By giving away 80 million unlocked phones for free? Microsoft has a lot of money to throw at this problem. They don’t have that much money.
