Analyst suggests Nokia may turn to Windows Phone

wp7c6

Adding somewhat to earlier speculation, Ashok Kumar, an analyst with Rodman & Renshaw, has suggested Nokia may have to turn to Windows Phone 7 as their next generation smartphone platform if their Symbian-based smartphones continue to fail to gain traction, claiming “the odds are stacked against the survival of Symbian.”

Speculation already exist for a Nokia Windows Phone 7 device, and like most of the older generation smartphone OS’s have seen a drop in market share recently, by as much as 4.5% between Q1 2009 and Q1 2010.

Calling Windows Phone 7 a “a wild card”, he still however went on to predict a mobile world dominated by iPhone and Android.

Does this analyst know any more or less than most of his rather inaccurate colleagues?  Let us know your opinion below.

A mobile world dominated by either a power-mad tyrant or a stealth data-mining OS, hmmm decisions, decisions….o.0

Where there is smoke there is fire. The observation is not really a stretch but based on what i'd consider obvious.

It makes total sense given the obvious slow death of anything Symbian. It's utter failure in the USA is the future it will see worldwide. WP7 will be great on smaller Kin-like devices (not just top-of-the-line smartphones) which Nokia seems to flourish creating.

Moving to Android imho would be another obvious possibility but that could totally erode Nokia further as a me-too product among tekkies. It would be a little late to the party and empty handed.

After WP7 ships and especially if Apple goes multi-carrier Android will level off. They didn't buy Palm so what other do they have? None really.

Well I wouldn't mind nokia picking up WP7 that's just more options for me considering symbian has never been something I even thought about getting. If I had to pick between Google and Apple of course google all the way but I'd like to see Microsoft soar. Let's face it when you have the same makers creating your desktop OS and mobile OS the possibilities of how they interact is endless and I think they are finally thinking that way.

  • Analyst ^3

This 'analyst'' and you guys really know nothing, Nokia has revamped Symbian completely with the new Symbian ^3 platform that will see the daylight in July, when Nokia N8 smartphone with 12 megapix camera and HDMI support will be out. It beats hands down IPhone 4G and Android phones. Symbian will take over th US market :D

      riiiiiiiiiiight… u wish ;)

Did you analysts know that worldwide, in Q1, Nokia's smarphone marketshare grew from 40% to 46%. What is this talk about slow death?

    • chinch

Symbian marketshare dropped almost 5% in Q1 and the slide will be more and more.

Nevermind Windows Phone 7 will be storming the world late 2010 and iPhone will be multicarrier sooner than later (the latest when 4G rolls out in the USA in 2011) and cheaper Android devices (hopefully) will soon appear.

  • Andrew

Well…. if so, i think Androind is a better option for Nokia

  • NuShrike

Riiight. Bet on an unproven OS with unproven featureset with unproven release date over incumbent OS that's still over 40% in domination and MeeGo that's simmering quite well. Even then, Android or webOS would be more sane choice than Wimpy7s.

    Time to short this guy.
