Another look at the NoDo update

Winrumors.com have posted another video of NoDo in action on a Windows Phone 7 handset with a leaked ROM.

They note that the update succeeds in the stated aims of bringing cut and paste, faster load times and better app search, but also noted that they were disappointed in the implementation of copy and paste, finding for example that pictures are selectable but could not be copied, and that accessing the copy and paste functionality can be tricky at times.

Some of the complains may not be valid seeing as though he's laying it down and using it that way and we all know there's an issue with that on certain phones.

    • creamhackered

I actually tried both ways and it was the same regardless. However, I wouldn't be surprised if this is an issue with the Mozart sensitivity. I haven't got another device to test NoDo on yet but will re-evaluate once it's fully distributed.

Is this really worth talking about? Now I guess the complaint (short coming) is no one likes the way C&P has been implemented in WP7.

    • wreiad

Pretty much. On iOS, there's a magnifying glass to help you actually see what you're selecting. On Windows phone, I can hardly see what I'm trying to select.. My finger's in the way and it doesn't show where you're up to. Come on.. It's incredibly flawed and nigh useless. I just don't like what we have to work with for the time being.

      • AhTiong

Agree…. It appears to me that MS is just patching holes on WP7…. If MS planned correctly in the first place, without using their so-called Sense links, I guess things will look better.

  • TriAxis

So wonder what happens if you press and hold a picture. Is there a copy option in the menu? I doubt it, but that would be nice. I guess this is more Text only Copy/Paste. But it would be nice to be able to move pictures around on the phone, and not to rely on the Zune software.

    • http://twitter.com/Luisraul924 @Luisraul924

      Agreed

    • Brianna

You get a "save picture" option.

  • simbadogg

if that is still the final of "improved search" for marketplace, it still sucks. you should be able to simply pick (swipe, use the metro layout theme for christs sake), whether you want to see an app, a song, or something else. If i'm looking for an application, i just dont want to see albums, artists, or songs in the results. what does msft not understand bout this? kinda makes you wonder if everyone at msft is actually using their wp7 phones yet. because i think that would be one glaring annoyance after using the platform for more than a week

    • Brianna

You can, but you have to first be in that section. For example, if I am in the "apps" section and hit search, the results will only be apps and if I am in the "music" section, the results will only be in music.

Apparently, Tom didn't do enough research in this one.

Landscape controls in browser and universal system search ..nuff said..

    • frank

Stop saying nuff said. You knew those were not in the update. Why complain now? Nuff said.

      • http://twitter.com/mayor4reel @mayor4reel

its called an opinion "frank"….of course i knew they werent in the update..those were just the two things I wanted personally..

    • TriAxis

I for one am glad there isn't any landscape controls. I like the fact that the bottom menu and URL bars disappears when I go into landscape mode. This gives you a larger screen to browse with.

      • AhTiong

But no way to allow user to enter URL, until you rotate it back to portrait mode again? That's another dumb idea from MS, just like the not saving of camera settings.

      • wreiad

It could be done like the Zune HD's ui, where the text box is hidden and only a transparent bar is visible at the bottom. The bar has the tabs, back button, and search, and you just tap it for the box.

        http://hjxvzw.blu.livefilestore.com/y1p75NAzxc59r

It should be that way so everytime I want to go to another website or access my tabs, I don't have to keep changing the orientation, especially when watching videos. They at least seem to be headed in that direction with IE9 [Minus the transparency].
        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YKC7c-ZLcA

I have a beef with ui decisions like this, since I have a Focus. I don't like it how buttons are so far apart that I have to keep shifting the phone in my hand to get to them.

        http://hjxvzw.blu.livefilestore.com/y1p75NAzxc59r

To adjust the volume on my Zune, all I do is press a button and swipe to my heart's content. Most of the time, I don't even have to look at the screen.
        http://hjxvzw.blu.livefilestore.com/y1p8saL3F_w2Q

With my Focus, the buttons are positioned all the way at the top of the screen. The Zune implementation was better. Better yet, why not just have the buttons at the side of the device on either side of the screen. Having them at the top doesn't make any sense. My Zune HD's screen may not be big, but I loved how it maintained one-handed-usability and was so easy to use. The biggest mistake with Windows phone could have easily been adding the search and back buttons, compared to how the Zune HD's ui works.

        • http://twitter.com/mayor4reel @mayor4reel

I love your analogies especially with the landscape controls…its just surprising Microsoft couldn't incorporate the best UI design features from the zune hd even though it was the basis for the metro UI.

  • AhTiong

According to the video, It appears that when resuming the game, it is not resuming to where you last stop at. It went back to the main menu instead. Is that normal?

    • JHP

That is up to the game developer…

I have not heard anywhere about copying a calendar appointment and pasting it to another day. Any light on that one?

Task switcher, is the most important missing option, with multitasking msft can sell more phones by having task switcher, majority of my co workers are BlackBerry users, and everybody is waiting for multitasking before abandoning RIM OS. HONESTLY majority of people DON'T need copy and paste, all they do is share the page. On the other hand its nice to have it.hd7
