Another Windows Phone 7 demo from ReMix 2010

Here is another video showing a Windows Phone 7 demo at Remix 2010. There is nothing particularly new shown, but the demo impresses with its smoothness and responsiveness, which brings the staid Metro UI alive, and also the real impression of an integrated experience which rivals HTC Sense easily.

Anyone else being slowly won over by Windows Phone 7? Let us know below.

what device is that in the demo? doesn't look like the Asus to me…

    • GP007

That's what I was wondering, it looks different. Maybe the LG dev device that devs are getting?

  • efjay

    Its laggy.

you must have these super eyes people are talking about

He's right, I'll be there day one to pick up a WP7 but there's some noticable lag for certain hubs… e.g. the people hub. There's a long enough delay between the selection of the hub and it opening that it's very noticable. I'm sure that's something that'll be sped up with time, afterall it must have to pull in a lot of data about status updates etc before opening.

What concerns me more though is the UI, I believe whilst I love it a lot of people are going to find it too complex. I say this because yesterday at the Apple store (my Dad bought an iPad and wanted assistance) the staff couldn't figure out how to use the Zuen despite some interest- these people are familiar with device UIs, albeit from Apple and I wonder if people have the patience to figure out MS's new design choices (see: Kin reviews).

        • GP007

Teens, or just people who are interested in teh Kin can find their way around it easy. And seriously the Apple people couldn't figure out how to use the Zune UI? REally? That's just sad. Anyone who's used a Xbox360 can use a Zune UI, anyone who's used the Zune UI can use WP7, hell if you've even used Media Center you can use all the others. They share the same UI elements and overall structure. I don't worry about peoples ability to learn the WP7 UI, that's why we have manuals. If people can use the piss poor dumbphone UI's SE, nokia and co use right now, using WP7 shouldn't be a problem at all.

As for the People hub taking a bit longer to load, I think that's got more to do with the sheer number of contacts and all the data it's pulling/refreshing from things like FB/Live/MySpace etc. The more "feeds" you have setup for it the more it's gotta do. It only makes sense that it'll load a tad bit longer than something else.

NB: I did mention the "pulling data" in my comment.

I personally believe the UI is intuitive but my parents can't figure out the Zune's UI, and they're very intelligent (albeit slightly technophobic). I believe the Apple iPhone OS UI is a very simple one to use, there's little to learn and as Microsoft has shown in their designs the "glimpses"/hints as to what to do next are readily available.

Overall I believe the UI will be popular but I can objectively say it isn't quite as intuitive as other interfaces we've seen… it makes up for it in aethetics I believe.

Also, the Kin user reviews I have seen by teens, posted on this site some time ago, had the teenagers saying they didn't find the UI easy to get used to. Just denying that it's the case doesn't stop it being true. Appreciating it doesn't have to be mutually exclusive to knowing it's faults.

And that's all you can say, efjay. That's all you have to share.

  • Buddy

WP7 may not be perfect but it 100% better then the crappy 6.5 I have to deploy to my users and keep apologizing for…

  • Diego!

I can't see the video clearly thereforeI think the video is laggy lol.

Anyway. I want to know what kind of device HTC is creating to outstand every other cellphone in the market with WP 7.

I wish there were already some spec. leaked :)

  • GP007

He's got a Windows Live tile on his start menu, I wanna see what that looks like personally. They've never shown the Live things for WP7 yet. Probably waiting for Wave 4 to go out in June.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Northerngeek Northerngeek

I was thinking the same. I have been trying to find a video from the conference delving into that hub but no luck yet.

      • kltye

That's not a hub – it's just his Windows Live email (aka Hotmail).

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/wreiad wreiad

What sense would that make? Doesn't the mail hub already handle hotmail?

          • kltye

There's no such thing as a mail hub, AFAIK. You set up individual accounts, just like on Android. The pinned shortcut is probably a shortcut to get to that particular email account easily, again like Android.

          • wreiad

Then you apparently missed out on a few things. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVPZKZdaFw4&fe

            (9:06)
It aggregiates your mail from various accounts, hence I don't see the purpose in having that and a shortcut just for windows live mail when the mail hub handles it already. Believe what you will, but to me, the Live tile is a Windows Live hub.

  • murani

This phone is actually alot more laggy than the LG Panther the developers are receivingl In fact that video showed some stuff (lag) that even the prototypes at MWC wasn't doing.

  • PedrodelaRiva

Firstly, where is the LANDSCAPE mode. Never have the chance to see it on WP7.

Secondly, I am about to move to Android. Just because of interesting apps available on Android and never available on Windows Phone. So where are the interesting Apps for WP7? Will WP7 have CorePlayer ? Kinoma Play ? Layar ? Deezer ?

"Anyone else being slowly won over by Windows Phone 7?"

    No. Next question?

Metro is still ugly. Nice animations, but ugly. Not sure if that's intentional or just a factor of time, but the white-on-black chromeless look doesn't inspire me.
