Asus Windows Phone 7 phone delayed to next year, possibly all WP7 devices?

wp7asusdelayed Northeast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar has told The Street that Asus’s Windows Phone 7 smartphone has been delayed, probably to early next year.

Production of the phone has been stopped temporarily. "The phone is still alive," says Kumar, but its arrival to the market will now probably be put off until early next year.

The cause of the delay is not known, but Kumar speculates that if it’s a software issue, it could affect all other OEMs, leading to delays across the board.

Of course this news come very soon after the announcement, and one has to assume when Steve Ballmer said that phones will arrive by the holiday season he already factored all such issues in.

Do you think Windows Phone 7 devices will arrive on time? Let us know below.

  • The OS was incomplete and even basic functions were missing or not shown on purpose. Microsoft has to fix that withing the next half year so yea I think there might be a delay once again. The more they wait the more can Android, iPhone OS and so on improve… It wouldn't surprise me if Apple makes a big step this year with a new iPhone & OS. Android, well that gets updated all the time so by the end of the year we might be on Android 3.0.. who knows.

MS can give to HD2 owners a WM7 beta….to see al the issues, and help the devs, to improve the first WM7 devices.

  • I just don't see a delay happening. I suspect every single Microsoft developer working on WM7 has their bonus tied to a Q4 launch. Also, What’s changed in the last 3 days to make Microsoft suddenly backtrack on the timing.

When have marketing dates represented human reality? I can also relate given I've been on the engineering side of the marketing date many times.

How can your development timeline change that dramatically in 3 days.

    1 Day before WM7 announcement:
    - Steve Ballmer : When will WM7 be ready for release?
    - Joe Belfiore : Q4 2010
    - Steve Ballmer: Perfect

    3 days after announcement.
    - Joe Belfiore : Steve, we aren’t going to make 2010. The WM development team is taking the entire summer off which we forgot to include in our development estimate. Sorry about that.
    - Steve Ballmer : $#%!#!%

    More sensensationalism.

Delayed in the USA… zero chance it misses holiday 2010 (see verizon Droid story). ASUS does not sell a WM device in the USA at this time FWIW.

delayed in lesser marketplaces where ASUS might be a recognizable name in stores? Who really cares ;-)

Meh. Analysts are wrong way more than they're right. Unless they actually have an 'inside scoop' that has some credibility, it's better to ignore them. I'd say that he's probably trolling for some readership uptick on the WP7S interest. :)

  • GP007:

I think come MiX we'll be surprised at how much MS has gotten done. Infact I bet the build they're show now is even older than we think and just a good one for the base UI. Maybe even a special branch just for MWC that they forked a month ago? We really don't know.

  • TheChozen:

@GP007: I think you're right about this. Let's wait and see what MS come up with for MIX

  • majg:

If it were HTC or similar… then perhaps its true.

However, how is the software delaying it if it hasn't be RTMs yet? Surely Silverlight/.Net/XNA/VS.net/Blend all work fine right now. lol

I agree with GP007, that MIX is going to be chock full of surprises.

  • Who?:

They'll push one device out over the holidays. It will be incomplete, but they'll promise never-ending updates. Nevertheless, the phone and OS will get panned, and things will resume as normal: with WM left by the wayside.

  • clint:

Microsoft has a tradition of overlapping beta releases. Usually by the time a beta is available to be shown (say at a tradeshow) it is already quite a few builds behind the current version. In many cases issues have already been discovered and fixed.

I don't think that there will be any problems with a Fall release, other than the fact that I can't wait that long!
