AT&T excited about Windows Phone 7, pleased with sales

att-logoWhile Microsoft refused to discuss the sales of Windows Phone 7, AT&T’s Glenn Lurie was slightly less reticent.

At the Dive Into Mobile conference he denied the company was concerned about the loss of iPhone exclusivity, saying the company was pleased with the sales of Android and Windows Phone 7 devices.

"We have come out very publicly and said we’re not concerned about it at all … If and when that ever happens, we are in a position to compete with anybody who has any device any time," he said.

“There are a lot of variables inside our base. The key is having a lot of devices that people want. We’re very excited about the new Android devices. We’re excited about Windows Phone 7. We’re the only provider in the US that has every OS."

AT&T has been rumoured to have ordered 8 million Windows Phone 7 handsets for 2011, and we have seen rumours of the HTC HD7 and Asus E600 both coming to the 93 million subscriber strong network.

Maybe AT&T itself has slightly more confidence in Windows Phone 7 than Microsoft itself?

Confidence in early sales of brand new platform doesn't mean much. Confidence in the actual product your making matters more. Did Android come running out of the gate being hugely successful? Nope, I don't think so, it took them 1.5 years to ONLY start gaining momentum.

Its amazing that WP7 has only been out for 4 weeks and everybody is screaming failure because nothing on sales has been reported, again, Google didn't even talk about Android success until far after the Droid was released, those guys went a year without saying anything on Androids success and everybody who wrote them off suddenly forget that they did so later on.

Get a grip of reality, people.

You're absolutely spot on, being a fanboy and running a business are two different things, the days of Microsoft opening the information gates are long gone, Redmond is taking the long view on WP7 and won't be revealing any sales numbers until at least CES early next year.

Android was so undercooked when it was initially released and did take over a year to begin to build any sales momentum yet all the tech/fanboy pundits seemed to have forgotten this.

Yeah I have to agree with you Interfame. He gave one example and I can think of an obvious one too. The Xbox! I remember when I first got an Xbox it was not the system to buy, most kids wanted PS2s. I stuck with the Xbox though and migrated to the 360 when it was released and look at how it has done. Just give MS some time to do some revisions and they'll come out just fine as usual. You gotta love them, they are such bull dogs. Try, try and try again!

The issue for Microsoft is that they need to keep the number hidden for a while so that the blogosphere doesn't have hard facts on which to "establish" that WP7 is failing. Perception counts for a lot in the tech market. Nobody wants to buy into a dying platform.

My guess would be that MS is hoping that WP7 will reach 1 million sales by sometime in January, at which time they can trot out the fact that it took Android 6 months to hit that mark. Even though that stat will be somewhat misleading (The G1 was only a single handset on a single, second-tier operator) it will be enough to convince the hoi polloi that WP7 is a legitimate platform to consider.

Have to say, it's getting a little tired, the whole sales figures, success, failure, isn't MS confident etc etc.. It's bad enough the BS being spouted in a lot of other so called tech sites without wmpoweruser joining the fray. It's EARLY DAYS people!
Yes WP7 is (very) late in the game. Yes it's going to take a while to build momentum, get some (decent) sales figures and build mind share. Yes MS should very likely improve on marketing efforts worldwide, not just in the US to help grow that mind share.

I totally agree with comparisons to at least Android's early days; it'll take a while but I for one have faith. There's too much riding on this for it to turn into a repeat of the KIN. The updates will come to fix issues and add features, the manufacturers will add more & more compelling devices and WP7 will slowly but surely climb up the ladder.

No one can deny the fact that competition is huge, IOS, Android and yes, RIM. But also, for the most part I've seen very few reviews/opinions (if any) of people who've actually used ANY of the WP7 devices for a length of time come back and say the product sucks because whatever anyone says that is just NOT true. Slowly, but surely more and more people will become aware of that, and hopefully MS & manufacturers will actively help make that happen with better promotion and more and more handsets.

    I love WP7 enough said.

Same here, Im a little spoiled having an iPhone 4 and a Samsung Focus, now that I have the two to compare to each other it's interesting to see two different approaches to mobile OS design, but more interesting than that is that as polished as the iPhone has become over the last 4 years, and as new as WP7 is, the two are very close on overall fit and finish, I would give a slight nod to IOS4 but only by a hair.

I cant wait to see what comes down the line from Microsoft for this exciting new platform.

"Maybe AT&T itself has slightly more confidence in Windows Phone 7 than Microsoft itself?"

Surur, You sound like a complete tool when you add nonsense such as this. But then again you guys did use the cretans at xxmobiles to cover for your blog so we should come to expect that sadly.

I agree, that conclusion is so weak, why is there so much push by WMPoweruser to tout sales numbers for WP7?

MS did not release the offical numbers? We know and most of us here probably dont care, I can speak for myself that I have been having too much fun with my WP7 to care less about inital sales and articifially padded stats put together by a self-created process by WMPoweruser. Honestly I liked WMPoweruser back then when it was exciting to read the good stuff that WMPower user, lately all I hear in most articles is "Oh what went wrong"? "Whats the current sales"?

Enough already, just focus on articles that actually make this site worth visiting!

As previously mentioned, PR Dept. should just say MS outsold original Android and iPhone during first few months. Word of mouth on WP7 is good. MS just needs to keep press dogs at bay. MS will get bump in sales when Verizon and Sprint are selling WP7.

  • GP007

You know, as of late whenever MS has been hush hush on things it's turned out for the best in the long run. These first month sales don't mean anything right now, the thing is can MS get a foot into the market by the end of the quarter and stop falling? If their marketshare actually shows a shift to the upside at the end of the qtr then that's all MS has to show you.

I had iPhones and all I have to say is, "I love Windows Phone 7" (Samsung Focus)!
