AT&T Mango Updates Start on the 27th

Thanks to an exclusive dig by WPCentral, we now know the timing of the Mango update on at least one carrier.  According to Daniel Rubino, AT&T will start rolling out the Mango update on the 27th of September.  The Samsung Focus v1.3, the HTC Surround, and the LG Quantum will start the show off on the 27th of September.

The HTC HD7S will be updated in early to mid October and unfortunately once again the Focus v1.4 will be the latecomer, being the last handset on AT&T to the Mango party.  Users of the later versioned Focus will have to wait till the end of October to get their hands on some juicy Mango.  WPCentral has more information in their exhaustive post.

About Matthew van de Crommert

My name is Matthew and I work in Healthcare IT in Silver Spring, Maryland. Currently own a Samsung Focus, a Zune Hd and an Xbox 360 with Kinect.

I guess having the HTC HD7S means allowing the little ones first… Bummer lol.

Either way, the Samsung Focus owners deserve it, they have been through so much.

If AT&T can update 3 phones within the next week, I’m sure Verizon should have no problem updating one.

Thank god I have Rev. 1.3, but I am kind of bummed about losing my data now from having the beta. I wish they had a way to update without having to go back to my NoDo back up. Just sayin.

I wonder what other features they may have that aren’t in the beta version, if any.

I asked this question before got no answer. Do 7720 RTM users still have to revert to NoDo to get the complete Mango update that includes OEM firmwares?

      • Anonymous

        Yes sir.

Reason being, the current 7720 RTM that you have, its from Microsoft.
Everything from drivers to the actual software. Since this build was supposed to be for developers, Microsoft set up warranties for anyone under the 7720 build to go through them. (Developers of course)

This saves the carrier from having to deal with backlash from devices not working etc. I’m sure for reasons being, they said multiple times to back up your NODO build and make a back up copy and another copy just in case.

Reverting backwards to NODO should be pretty straight forward compared to upgrading the build 7720 to the Release one. Anything can go wrong upgrading from the RTM to release.

Even though, I think Microsoft might come up with a way to do it.

Well this has proven a lesson for me as to why Windows Phone is the best.  I didn’t want to wait for Sprint to get a WP7 device, as they were only saying first half of 2011.  And okay I wasn’t impressed that WP7 was missing things that it should have never been launched without.  So I got my first ever Android device, a Samsung Transform. I wasn’t sure about Android so I didn’t go all out. But I thought it was cool, it was supposed to get Froyo by the end of Dec 2010.  It was mid March 2011 before it finally hit. Now in all fairness WP7 updates have not been speedy or on time.  I’m not even gonna hold my breath for Gingerbread.  I think Samsung will skip it because it’s not one of their flagship phones. That’s right, rather than taking care of their customer and making sure their phone is as up to date as possible, they’ll likely just skip it.  So next upgrade will be WP7, where all the phones get all the updates.  And it WILL NOT be a Samsung!  I CANNOT wait until next year when I can dump Android and slide into the amazingly cool WP7.5.

We will welcome you comrade. I had an iPhone and wanted to get rid of it. I was glad I didn’t go with android. I went with WP7, a pre nodo focus and then nodo, but now I have the beta and I pray MS doesn’t eff this phone system up because I could  not see myself going to Android or back to my crappy iPhone. Ever

Thanks, sadly I’m stuck with this Samsung Android nightmare its looking like till Sept of 2012.  I’m really hoping Sprint gets the Titan and or the Radar, I’m kind of crazy I want that big screen.  I’d really rather have a Nokia WP7, but an HTC something would make me happy too.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Airan-Plaster/1719426825 Airan Plaster

Yeah the Titan looks awesome. I do want to see what the Focus S 4.3″ SAMOLED+, is all about though. I love my Focus and the screen is amazing.

Sprint has Android so far up its…I’m just not so sure what WP7 devices they will have.  Though much can change in 12 months.  Hopefully Nokia will send North America some Windows Phone love and not ignore us in favor of the rest of the world, Would be great to have more models on each carrier to choose from, though sadly the carriers seem to put WP7 in the basement and then wonder why it doesn’t sell.  I’ll get mine off line if I have to.  No sales person is going to try and stick me into another Android nightmare phone

          • http://www.twitter.com/wixostrix WixosTrix

Oh North America will be Nokia’s saviour, if it works.  It’s practically their main focus.  We will see them marketing like crazy.  They are already trying to come up with a branding for their US phones.  So if Microsoft can get this update out with any hiccups and it doesn’t cause issues over time, and Nokia can get some solid, feature packed hardware, there really can be a bright future.  I do feel a bit overly optimistic but Microsoft has been executing very well for the most part lately and surprising a lot of people.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZWIQU6F5MNQWGAIOKNHSCSJFDE Brian

How exactly is it their main focus – first roll outs will be in Europe, not the US and we probably won’t see a Nokia phone until sometime in 2012. If you think about how poor their reputation is in the US it does make sense for them to start elsewhere – they have a lot of brand rebuilding they will need to do here.

As for Microsoft executing well didn’t Balmer just admit the WP7 has done much worse than they expected it to – that’s hardly “executing well.”

          • http://www.twitter.com/wixostrix WixosTrix

Duh, we know they aren’t releasing any north American phones until 2012. I say it’s practically their main focus because they have the most work to do over here in the US. Yeah their releasing phones in Europe first because that would be easy, people over there already like Nokia.
And i said for the mist part execution has been pretty good lately. While Ballmer did admit to he was disappointed by initial sales he also said he was optimistic about its future with Mango and the upcoming Nokia phones. If WP7 had the quantity of ads Android had, we could be telling a very different story. Since that isn’t the case, we just have to except the slow start, just as many others. WP7 is a great product and the people who actually give it a chance usually love it.

So you admit there focusing on lots of other markets first yet some how that makes the US their main focus?

And how does Balmer being enthusiastic about the future (something that HASN’T happened) while being disappointed with the past (something that HAS happened) equal “pretty good execution lately?”

Nokia is not emphasizing the US because their reputation is crap here and the competition is very strong. As for people over there loving them Nokia now has the lowest customer retention rate of any major handset vendor: http://www.phonearena.com/news/The-iPhones-89-retention-rate-crushes-rivals_id22373

Microsoft’s execution has been admittedly poor to date, there’s little evidence that they understand why, and were already starting to hear things about the mango update (month long roll outs minimum, handsets with status unknown) that are sounding a lot more like the NoDo rollout than the next iOS rollout.

          • http://www.twitter.com/wixostrix WixosTrix

I merely meant, they are doing a lot of preparation for their American launch which could be one of the reasons why we have to wait until 2012, as opposed to getting some sooner. I didn’t mean any disregard to the other markets, but the US is where they have the most work to do.
Regardless of the extended roll out time frame, all of the devices will be updated. That is a guarantee. Unlike any Android phone. Nothing is guarantee unless they specifically say it’s coming. But they might not tell you that until way after the update was made available by Google. Often times the next update is looking, which will cause another uncertainty for updating.
I’m not expecting an iOS style release, at least not this early for them. You keep trying to pin that “pretty good execution” line I used against me. WP7 looks to have had a rocky year face first, but the back-end services and improvements in Mango is where all their amazing work is showing. They have the only ecosystem and platform that can competitively compete with Apple in the mobile space. Google has the platform, but not really a strong ecosystem. I can see Amazon getting there before Google.

I have yet to see any sign of Nokia doing preparation for a US rollout – zip, nada. Don’t get me wrong, with Nokia hemorrhaging smartphone customers as fast as they are (their marketshare will be in the single digits by year’s end) they need to focus where they have the best chance for a turn around – medium price handsets in familiar European markets, rather than in places where they are basically seen as bottom of the barrel (US).

You used pretty good execution, not me, but then you go on to admit it was a pretty rocky year. It’s one or the other (hint: it was worse than rocky) – it’s not like no one was doing well over the last year. They may be setting themselves up to execute better in the future (I’m not so sure), but one thing Microsoft has shown with the XBox is they are willing to take a beating while they wait for a competitor to stumble.

          • http://www.twitter.com/wixostrix WixosTrix

Alright man, whatever. All you’re doing is being pessimistic. I recognize both Microsoft’s success and failures. If you dont like WP7, that’s fine. If you think Microsoft has done a terrible job executing it, that’s fine too. Those are your opinions and you’re entitled to them.
Btw, there is plenty of evidence for Nokia’s US prep and they have been reported on this site.

“Though much can change in 12 months” – if the rumors are true and Sprint gets the new iPhone then I suspect you are right and much will change in the next 12 months for Sprint. Adding iPhone to their lineup probably won’t help WP7′s positioning any unfortunately.

If I were you, I would sell that Andriod and get a new or used WP7 from ebay. You only need to spend $100 or less net maybe. One year is a long time to wait…

          • Anonymous

Hey thanks, great suggestion.  I dunno, hope they don’t charge me a dumping fee for taking it off my hands.  I need to look into it

I’m in the same boat. I’ve been eagerly waiting for Mango for a long time, and I’ve had no choice but to use my android phone in the meantime just because I need some functionality that isn’t yet on windows phone (though Mango will bring it). For some reason these 5 days seem an even longer wait than the past few months haha.

good grief…if I owned a 1.4 Focus I’d be so pissed.  Seriously, ATT should just return all of those and demand 1.3s….what a disaster….Samsung fails it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Airan-Plaster/1719426825 Airan Plaster

Agreed! Epic Fail on Samsungs part. Or they could offer a sweet deal on the new Focus when it comes out. That would make some people happy.

Any news on what the Final ATT version will have that the current RTM does not?

Fingers crossed for the mobile hotspot being activited my ipad needs it. :)

I want to know what features we might get too. Hopefully good ones. I have custom ringtones on my beta Focus and that is awesome.

It shouldn’t be too difficult. Imagine the only things they could probably delay or disable would be Visual voicemail and the tethering option.

I’m not sure if I heard correctly, but from HTC only newer Mango devices would support the mobile hotspot feature. Unfortunately I can’t remember where I saw this.
