feed me RSS Reader to be removed from the Marketplace
feed me will be temporarily removed from the marketplace within the next few days. Due to personal reasons I am unable to further develop or support feed me for the immediate future. However, I do hope to have a new version back online towards the end of the first quarter of 2012.
If anybody needs to reinstall feed me please get in touch and I will consider publishing an unsupported beta version. Any feedback is still welcome as I will be checking my e-mails periodically.
Thanks go out to all of the people that have supported feed me over the last 10 months.
feed me RSS Reader updated
Over the last three weeks feed me has had two updates containing many small enhancements that have greatly improved usability.
As well as adding support for themes, there is now a full import from Google Reader (folders in Google Reader will be imported as groups). The article view has also been completely revamped. There is a new full-screen view in landscape mode and you can now swipe between articles. A new ‘paging’ feature has also been introduced, allowing you to jump to the next or previous page in an article by tapping the top or bottom of the screen. You can see these changes in action in the video above.
Some of the other highlights include:
- Images can now be shown in the article lists
- Greatly improved scrolling performance
- Improved cache management
- The limit to the number of feeds for the live tile has been removed

A free, ad supported version of feed me version 1.6 is now available on the marketplace. This version includes all of the features of the current paid version, but is restricted to four feeds for the live tile. If the advertising works out as expected, this limit will be increased in the next update.
Key Features:
- Live tile shows new article count (for up to 4 feeds)
- Add a YouTube feed. All the standard feeds are supported as well as user uploads and searches
- View YouTube videos embedded in an article or web page
- Watch HQ and HD YouTube videos over your 3G connection
- View or listen to podcasts and download them for offline access
- Listen to podcasts in the background while browsing other articles
- Tweet or e-mail articles, post to facebook or send the link in a SMS
- Add articles to Instapaper or Read it Later
You can view full details on the website and you can get feed me here (opens Zune).
Check out the video below for a quick tour of what is new in this release.

feed me 1.6 – now with HD YouTube video

Have you ever wanted to see when new videos have been uploaded to YouTube directly on a live tile? Read on…
feed me version 1.6 is now available on the marketplace. Now feed me offers full support for YouTube feeds, allowing you to set up 7 different types of feed quickly and easily:
- User uploads (just enter a username)
- Video search (enter the keywords)
- Top rated
- Top favourites
- Most popular
- Most viewed
- Most recent
The last five can be set to a specific region (or left non region-specific).
The videos are laid out differently to normal articles, with a video thumbnail, rating, uploader and description (see the screenshot above). Clicking on the thumbnail starts the video in the integrated player, allowing HQ and HD playback over 3G without leaving
the app (leaving updates and any podcast downloads you may have started running in the background). Of course these feeds can be selected for the live tile just like any other so you can see at a glance when a new video has been uploaded.
All the YouTube version 2 feeds documented here are supported and should you add one of these feeds manually, it will be automatically recognized and displayed properly.
With feed me 1.6 you can also post articles to facebook, you can listen to podcasts while reading other articles and in the group settings you can choose to hide all of the read articles for that group. Check out the video below for a quick tour.
You can view a full change list on the website and you can get the update here (opens Zune).

feed me version 1.5 is now available on the marketplace. This is the first of two updates in the next two weeks and includes a new podcast download feature, new animations and some more minor changes.
You can now download podcasts for offline viewing. The download feature also supports pause and resume – you can manually pause a download, or upon exiting the app all downloads are automatically paused. A list of all downloads is available from the main page (the list is currently not categorized but this will be implemented in the coming update).
The page transitions mimic the standard WP7 transitions, greatly improving the apps integration with stock WP7 look and feel. The animations can be turned off in the settings if you prefer the old fade transitions.

‘feed me’ RSS Reader gets a major overhaul

feed me, my RSS reader for WP7, started out as a personal project due to the lack of an app that met my needs. All I really wanted was to be able to group feeds together so I could read all the latest articles for a specific area of interest without constantly switching between views. So in late February feed me 1.0 hit the market. This version was a simple but fast and easy to use ATOM, RSS and RDF reader that organized feeds into groups for easy browsing.
I quickly realized that there was still a long way to go before I had something that I would be completely happy with… and so I started to redo a few things. The programmer in me has since taken over and feed me has had three updates in the last two weeks adding a huge amount of functionality and a lot of improvements. It is now at the stage where I honestly feel it is one of the better RSS apps out there – but hey, it is my app
You can view a full change list on the website, but here are a few of the highlights from the recent updates:
- Live tile shows new article count
- Tweet articles
- Add articles to Instapaper or Read it Later
- View or listen to podcasts
- Allow feed me to run under the lock screen (allowing feeds to be updated when the phone is locked)
- Supports all windows-125* and ISO-8859-* encodings
- Add new feeds from Google Reader
- Backup and restore settings to our server
On top of this here are some of the key features that have been around since Version 1.0:
- Support for ATOM, RSS and RDF feed formats
- E-mail articles or send the link in a SMS
- A Google feed search for adding new feeds
- Filtering of views using the title and/or content
- Favorites for bookmarking items
- Offline browsing of previously downloaded content
feed me supports English and German and costs a mere $1,29 and is available from Marketplace here (opens Zune). There is also a fully functional trial version. This version has a limit of four groups with a maximum of four feeds each. It is also limited to a single feed for the live tile and does not support audio and video content (e.g. podcasts).
There is, however, no time limit on the trial, so if you can live with these restrictions then you can consider this a free app.
