WM6.5 Facebook app at your service.
Weeeell, lookey here gents and ladies. Seems WM6.5 just seems to bring more ![]()
and more to the party. Today’s latest ripped .cab file for all to enjoy is a Facebook application derived from the WM6.5 ROM that has been picked apart by the vultures of XDA-Developers. At first I didn’t know if this was a HTC or Microsoft app but looking closely at the graphics and design, It’s HTC for sure.
As with any app that focused on a social website. Tracking your friend’s status, pics, apps areat your fingertips along with the uploading of pictures and the updating in realtime of your profile. Some heavy duty stuff and it looks quite good as well. Thanks to Pocketnow for the heads up. Click here for more info.
Acer to distribute it’s new line of smartphones through Brightpoint in UK.
Whether they have gotten the media attention they deserve or not, Acer has been
making plenty of headlines so far. The devices they have lined up have very impressive specs and they look to take a bite out of HTC’s market share. As we all know, Acer is first and foremost, a laptop computer maker with some strong ties to the European market.
Acer has announced that they will be distributing their line of smartphones through Brightstar and Brightpoint among others selected by Acer. This aggressive strategy is sure to ensure the foundation of at least marginal success. Click here for more info. thanks to mobile news cwp in the UK for the scoop.
Scrobble 1.3 Freeware that is actually well made!
Take a wild guess where the author reigns from. If you guessed XDA then you sir are the man! Acrosser from XDA has developed a free game that is based on, wait for it, Scrabble! It’s optimized for VGA screens but will work for QVGA and WVGA screens as well (for all you Touch HD and beta TP2 users).
The game works well with touch input and I enjoyed working with it. Not only that, acrosser says he’s working on multiple language versions of Scrobble as well. I personally recommend it as it’s a free game that if were on a “Windows Mobile App Store” would probably be worth $5.99 or even more. Show the guy some support and try the game out. Look up this thread to download it.
Ever Wonder where Microsoft comes up with this stuff?
Well boys and girls, wonder no longer as I have a great little tidbit to share with all of you. If you pay close attention to the second screen, I’m sure you will notice something very interesting. The company that is responsible for designing the screen above is called “the Astonishing Tribe”.
And what makes this even more interesting is that it seems they helped designed the new WM6.5 Locking screen which bears a strong resemblance to this screen. For those of you who found the new locking screen to be good looking, this should be essential news for you to know.
ACER Tempo Smartphone Series: X960, F900, M900 and DX900
Acer really put all of it’s eggs in 1 basket as they announce 4 new phones at MWC 2009 in Barcelona. While I really do like the specs of all four in regard to the niches of the market each will fill, it seems Acer forgot WM6.5 was going to be released today as none of them appear to be eligible for a upgrade.
The Acer X960 looks to be a competitor to the Touch 3G based on shape and specs. Looks like a great mid-range phone.
The F900 is strictly a Touch Diamond 1 competitor as it has great specs but it doesn’t match up to well with the Touch HD while the Touch Diamond 2 will end up being the better device.
The M900 is my opinion the jawdropper of the group. It manages to have a better camera then the Touch Pro 2 and it includes a LED Flash. It is about 15 grams heavier then the Touch Pro 2 and while it comes with a headphone jack, it’s of the 2.5mm variety. Not only that, it comes with SiRF star III for all you GPS fanatics. It looks like the Touch Pro 2 will have to win this one on software.
Finally we have the DX900 which is a interesting device that lines up against the HTC Touch Cruise 2009 with a special twist: it’s a Dual SIM device. the first SIM slot comes with HSDPA and Quad Band GSM while the 2nd is a Tri-band GSM only.
All in all, some really great phones by Acer were released as it seems HTC will have much more tougher competition this year with Acer, ZTE and now LG throwing plenty of support behind Windows Mobile.
You can check the specifications of the Tempo series below and more information can be found here.

Hilarious Microsoft Ad…From India
Some say a picture is worth a thousand words. If that truly is the case, No amount of words can describe the insanity that goes on in this Windows Ad from India of all places. Very smartly done and extremely funny. Must be seen to be believed. BTW, a cute girl with a HTC Touch, very nice possibilities.
Verizon to Release HTC Touch Diamond, offer Omnia for $99 in March?
Well look who showed up all late to the party??
It’s Verizon and it’s not even right to call it “fashionably” late at this point but they will be releasing the HTC Touch Diamond in March. The Diamond has been talked about ad nauseum yet still is a very cool device. Yet Sprint released the Touch Diamond back in September and even it’s bed buddy Alltell released this last year but as they say, better late then never.
Another interesting tidbit I found out about is that Verizon will be offering it’s Samsung Omnia for $99 after a 2 year contract. That’s a VERY good price for what is a power packed smartphone. Hmm, Touch Diamond and Omnia on the same carrier, I smell a catfight.
Thanks to Engadget Mobile for the heads up. Click here for this and more info on verizon’s plans for next month.
Blackberry Application Suite crops up on devices.xml
As an update to our last article on BAS (the so-called virtual blackberry), it seems RIM has sent this out as a beta to other companies. For those of you who have found Blackberry Connect useful, this blows it out of the water in so many different ways. This speaks to how powerful Windows Mobile is as we’ve seen it have both Andriod and now Blackberry running alongside Windows Mobile. Now let’s get to the nitty gritty.
Blackberry Messenger works (for all of you BM fanatics) along with Blackberry Maps. BES and BIS seem to work as well so this truly a very powerful application. But there are 1 or 2 drawbacks (as Jeremy Clarkson would say). As far as eligible devices go, only the HTC Touch Pro/Fuze and the TyTn II work are compatible as they have the physical keyboards which are needed for BAS is based on OS 4.2 . THAT right there is a big let down as the graphics are based on 4.5 but will have 4.2 underneath.
For those of you that don’t know, OS 4.2 is from the Blackberry Pearl and Blackberry Curve. I personally have found that boring, overly simplistic and their media features to be horrendous. OS 4.5 comes from the Blackberry Bold which I actually did like a lot. So BAS fixes the issue of it looking boring and being simplistic to a fault. For all you CDMA Fans, BAS is not compatible although it works with over 8 different languages. Windows Mobile handles all the texting and calling features so it’s not a full Port. Some may be a bit disappointed with that.
Much love to Boy Genius for the Scoop! Click here for the full article.
GPS Fix for O2 XDA Serra
As an owner of a HTC Raphael (Fuze in my case), I think that it’s one of the best devices out right now. It gets the job done with so many options for input. Yet it’s not perfect in every manner. One of the complaints on the device is the GPS lagging getting a lock with satellites.
That may now be a problem of the past as HTC has pushed out a GPS fix for the O2 XDA Serra. From what I’ve seen, it’s not a full ROM upgrade so install should be a cinch. GPS Lock-on is reported to occur much faster and in some cases, indoors as well. Click here! to download it.
Thanks to coolsmartphone for the heads-up.
Softbank taking an Interest in WM and it’s accessories
I’m sure none of you would expect this but Windows Mobile has a much bigger presence in Japan then one would expect. Softbank being the #2 wireless carrier in Japan in particular has recently taken an increased interest in Windows Mobile. The HTC TyTn I was one of the first devices brought over to Japan during it’s 3G stage. As of now, they offer the “X04HT” and “X05HT” which is the HTC Touch Diamond and Touch Pro respectively. Of course, the Touch Diamonnd is offered all over the world so there must be something interesting and different that is being done for Softbank
An interesting take Softbank has taken to differentiate their Diamond from the rest is that they are offering peripherals to enhance their offering. Bluetooth devices and charging stands are some of the peripherals being offered but by also offering it with unique and stylish designs helps it stand out. In a Market where 1-seg tuner and WVGA Flip phones dominate the scene, in a market where accessories and peripherals are much more important then most other countries, the fact that they are turning to smartphones as stylish and functional as these HTC Devices are a step in the right direction. The interview of Softbank by Nikkei Electronics contains all the information here
Scrub up your contacts!
Ok, the title may sound a tad inappropriate but it perfectly describes what this nice bit of software from Trinket Software does.
It can sort up your contacts in many different orders. It will scan your contacts and inform you of what information is missing which I think is incredible. Just about any bit of information that can be entered for a contact can be used to sort through them. I really think this is a decent program and is available to download from Trinket here.
Thanks to the guys at Pda.Pl for the info!
HTC’s Invasion of the Colonies
For the most part, most phones manufacturers don’t tend to send their blue chip devices to the U.S. and if they do, it’s usually after they are released in Europe/Asia. The only exception to this rule is Apple, who thanks to a strong relationship with AT&T focuses here in the U.S. and Motorola. LG and Samsung will release their best wares in Europe/Asia and then release it 6 months later in the U.S. on CDMA networks. Nokia takes too long releasing U.S. versions of it’s phones and it does a terrible job of updating it’s software.
HTC was not immune to this theory. The HTC Touch HD is the greatest example of this. A absolutely great device but is sadly not available in the U.S. But it looks like those times are changing. For the first time ever, HTC’s best devices were released on both GSM and CDMA networks in the same year when in the past, this was not the case. The HTC Touch Diamond and Touch Pro have been big successes for HTC in America along with the HTC Fuze.
But now thanks to the news of HTC’s leaked Roadmap for 2009, it seems that the U.S. is a market they will not ignore. 9 devices are on that roadmap specifically for U.S. Carriers not to mention U.S. Friendly versions of their other devices they will release worldwide. Some of the devices that I feel deserve mentioning are the HTC Topaz for AT&T which to mean is a indication that AT&T realizes they need to put their eggs in more then one basket (iPhone) and by having a killer Win Mo device which is touchscreen only and it looks sexy, that it’s a good thing. Also of note is the HTC Barium and HTC Jasper which they say is a refreshing of the HTC Fuze and Sprint Touch Pro respectively. It’s interesting to me because they are getting refreshes of these devices while the HTC Rhodium and HTC Tungsten is the long awaited HTC Touch HD Pro. it seems that these will be high end devices that will end up being a rung below the Rhodium and Tungsten.
I’m glad to see that HTC is releasing so many devices and is truly “covering their bases”. While the software will ultimately decide how good these devices are, there is no denying that the best devices hardware wise come from Windows Mobile and specifically HTC. And the best part is, the U.S. won’t be left out of this Barrage of devices.
Hands On With HTC S743
Even though everything these days is all about Touch, I must say that WM Standard devices have impressed me over the last year. None more so then the HTC S740. Alas, it comes without U.S. 3G so my excitement for it was tempered despite a great form factor and sleek design.
HTC must have a psychic tapped into my head because behold the HTC S743. All the great features like the 528 MHZ Processor, 2.4” QVGA screen, HSDPA 7.2, Wi-Fi and GPS are all here. The only difference between the 2 devices is that the S743 has 850/1900 for HSDPA and it’s missing the video calling camera. Needless to say it’s a slap in the face to all the Latin American nations with 850 3G and Video Calling but I digress. Thanks to Engadget Mobile for the Scoop.
