Marathon updated for WP8 – now with background tracking

The GPS training app Marathon have been updated for Windows Phone 8 and include many of the new capabilities of the OS. The most widely requested feature is the ability to run completely in the background, allowing you to use other apps without interrupting Marathon.

This version also adds:

  • The new Nokia Maps, including a 3D mode.
  • A new wide Live Tile with information about your latest result.
  • The ability to open GPX files and save them on the device or share to marathon-mobile.net, Twitter and Facebook.
  • The first and currently only app on the Store that can open KML files and view the route on a map.

Marathon 2.9 adds "Live Tracking" – lets your friends follow you on the workout

Marathon, one of the sport trackers available for your Windows Phone has been updated with a feature that continuously uploads your data while you are running. A great way for your friends and relatives to keep track of your progress during a race!

Tweet SampleThe application can be configured to post a link to Twitter and/or Facebook as soon as you start a recording. A convenient way to let everyone know what you’re up to! Live Tracking results contain the same information as any other result uploaded to www.marathon-mobile.net. Which includes a map, altitude and speed charts, interval times for every km or mile, time, speed, rank and so on. Live Tracking is available in both the free and premium version.

This update also adds translation into German for both the UI and announcements (Supported languages: English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Dutch and Swedish) as well as a few bug fixes. The accompanying webpage has also been updated with a new UI as well as new hardware to improve the experience even more.

Marathon 2.8 starts handing out achievements for your workout

It might not be the real Xbox LIVE achievements, but it’ll still give you a new goal to aim for and yet another reason to put on your running shoes. The recent update will brings the GPS training app Marathon to version 2.8 which now award you with various achievements for your workout. Initially there’ll be 55 achievements; currently 6 of them have yet not been awarded to any user. They are divided into gold, silver and bronze, so even if you’re not an elite runner you should be able to grab some of them.

Furthermore the new version fixes a few bugs, adds an auto pause feature as well as voices for the announcements in Spanish, Dutch, Italian, French and Swedish.

Marathon is an application designed primary to aid runners with their workout. It uses the phones built in GPS receiver to keep track of various statistics such as distance, speed, calories consumed and altitude change. Thanks to the voice announcement feature you’ll know your progress without picking your phone out of the pocket. You can also compete against your previous recordings or setting a goal based on time and distance. Even though its primary designed for runners Marathon can be used with all kinds of outdoor activities. Which, according to its users includes taking the plane to Mexico (Remember that receivers/transmitters are forbidden on most commercial flights).

Marathon 2.3 adds Bing Maps support, on sale for $0.99

Continuing on the health theme, are you one of those people who needs a little motivation to head out for a run? Then Marathon might be just the app you need to stay healthy. It’s one of those GPS based applications for runners which records your movement and thereby let you keep track of your performance. Marathon records various statistics, such as time, distance, speed, calories consumed and altitude change. You can also view a chart of your speed and altitude change, as well as see your route plotted on a map.

The app contains a neat announcement feature so you’ll know your performance during the workout and be able to adjust your pace to reach your goals. As an extra motivation boost you can compete against your previous results or a generic result based on time and distance.

There’s also a feature which lets you share your results on www.marathon-mobile.net, as well as posting a message on Twitter and Facebook.
