Another Twitter App For WP7
I guess once they start, they do not stop. Just a few weeks ago we had some people asking if there will be a twitter solution at launch. Well Microsoft announced officially and it seems their will be quite a few to select from.
This new one just posted a few hours ago on 1800PPC, is one of those applications for Twitter you will have to choose from. It is seems to have a very simple nice design to it, and might be something that even beats the Microsoft implementation of Twitter.
Features:
- browsing tweets in multiple views
- user management
- list management
- direct messages
- posting photos
- searching tweets and users
- inline pictures from various image service yfrog, tweetphoto and twitpic
- Posting tweets with pictures from the camera or library to twitpic, tweetphoto or yfrog
- multiple account management
- add geo tag to tweets
Desire HD ROM Port Now Available
We usually like to keep our Android news apart from each other but since there was much interest in the previous article, we though we should let you know of this. Just released today by Darkstone, you can finally download and use the Desire HD ROM that was unveiled last week. HTC has been cracking down on the leaked ROM and seemingly asking people to take down the links, but they got it a bit too late since Dark had a go at it.
His port seems to work fast on the video and here is a little information he provided:
HTC Desire HD build for HTC HD2 by darkstone (Beta 2):
Easier to list whats NOT working:
- Camera (app closes itself)
- Ebook reader (E-Books do not open)
- Ringtones (Unable to select a ringtone, get a force close error)
- Video playback from SD card is slow, needs rectifying
- LED Notifications are bizzare, sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t
// Creates a 1gb data.img (takes a long time to make on first boot, be patient. No, the HD2 has not crashed despite what the screen looks like! Wait 10 minutes or so.)
// Don’t worry about FB console not showing, that’s normal
// This shouldn’t really be considered as a build for daily usage, still experimental
// Copy the Android folder to SD card, run CLRCAD.EXE and haret.exe on your HD2
Git diff patches included, Thanks to gauner1986 for sharing his patch (and also correcting my mistake with PPPD)!
Thanks to mattc for support!
Thanks to football for the dump!
Thanks to the usual suspects at #htc-linux and #htc-linux-chat!
Kernel Tree: http://www.gitorious.com/linux-on-wi…x_on_wince_htc (Kernel compiled on 19/09/2010 by darkstone)
Diff patches used in the kernel provided are included in the build, found in the /Android/diff/ folder.
So if this all interests you, head over to Xda to talk and download it at his site.
Alphabet Crayon Game For WP7
In a world were teaching the basic things to a baby is the TV and Dora The Explorers job, this application can even employ your upcoming Windows Phone 7 device to the team. Posted by the guys at MD, this game strives to teach toddlers the way to go through the alphabet. The game was tested and proven functional by a 3 year old and so we can say it will work perfectly fine for my niece that always wants to see my phone. Now since I am sure we do not have many toddlers in our reader base I will keep it at that, and you can enjoy the video.
XDAndroid Done For The Build
Well guys this whole month I have not posted much Android news and since I usually limit myself to 5 a month, here is another story. It seems one of the most popular Android porting team is done porting/tweaking for Froyo to HTC devices. In a recent article by Pocketnow, the guys seem to have come as close to perfection as they can and are living it there for now. Their latest version is said to be noticeable faster, smoother, and cuts boot time by a significant number.
Here is the change log:
- FINAL 17.09.10
FRX01 by stinebd
- Added full language pack
- Added Chinese and Japanese IMEs
- Boot animation speedup (ro.opengles.version=1 sync from upstream)
- GApps package update (thanks to CyanogenMod)
- Replace Gallery3D with Gallery, for stability improvement
- Several changes to enable userland Camera support (from bzo, still needs kernel support)
- Userland built-in WiFi tethering support for Rhodium (rootfs changes and testing needed)
- Signed XDAndroid release packages
- Updated startup configs
- Using andboot as default root directory
Since all good things have to come to an end… I guess this is over for now and hopefully these guys will return when Android 3.0 is released for more porting.
Headover to XDA and your device’s forum for the download links.
Android Gets A Bit Of WP7 Envy
While there is no question that Google and Apple are on their toes about WP7 and what its outcome will be, and now it even seems some users want a piece of the new world. Over at XDA, a member has developed a new guide to get you the design above while still keeping good old Android. The design is taken a bit from both WP7 and even the Kin’s and I quite frankly love it. If I was not so lazy I would follow those steps and get this going on this Droid X I have next to me but gush darn it being a Minnesotan, I don’t feel like it.
This goes to show that while some might say the design and concept is stupid, a lot of others are trying to simulate the experience on the currently available hardware and software.
If you are an Android users (which I know some of you are) and want to try your luck, go to the thread in follow the steps.
HTC HD2 Already Running Desire HD ROM
It seems they HD2 is faster than some other Android devices at getting ports because in the video above DarkStone has a version running on his HD2. He managed to get this port only 3 days after the original release of the new device. Now it is not the fastest build I have seen on video but I am sure that is why he did not release it yet. I am sure he will improve, enhance, optimize this build so he can upgrade his line of Android builds.
What do you think of the HD2 and its unstoppable ability to keep up with current devices and take everything while still looking cool.

The Unofficial Change Log For The RTM Version Of Windows Phone 7
Having a friend that is a serious developer or is close to the Windows Phone 7 scene is nice, and thankfully for us we do.
Today he delivered to us the most elusive of things – an unofficial change log for the release to manufacturer version of Windows Phone 7.
Here is the changes he notices below.
Landscape in Search
Hotmail/live mail syncing enabled
Text fades out on lockscreen
Marketplace has lots of caching (before it redownloaded the entire database on each load, now it doesn’t)
Games hub loads much faster
Everything is faster
Slight change in Bing maps, app bar UI makes it faster to search, nicer icons
Panorama/pivots work!
Only 10 apps can be sideloaded at a time (which is a right PITA for development).
As time goes on he will add more to the change log. Keep an eye on the site or our twitter account (twitter.com/wmpoweruser) for the latest Windows Phone 7 news.
MMTaskManager Just Got Cooler
Having the ability to switch between tasks and close running applications is one of the features I am not going to miss in WP7 but still love in WM6 and MMTM is the best at it. MMTM is one of many different task managers that are available for Windows Mobile. Its does the same thing as others but in a recent update the application now brings an Android like popup box that gives you the ability to close all other running applications or switch to them.
Here is the change log:
MMTaskManager is a small and simple task manager that allows you to easily and quickly switch between current running applications. It also allows you to close any selected application or all applications right on your finger tips.
In additional to closing applications, MMTaskManager reports how much memory each of the application uses to see which application takes up the most space in memory. The app also display the total amount of memory your device has as well as available memory.
Features
- Task Switcher
- Fully close a running application by tapping on the X button (both WM 6.5 and WM 6.5.x)
- Position fix for old apps running on WM 6.5.x
- Soft reset
- Memory usage report (Total, available, app usage, etc)
- Multi-language
- Skinning
If this interests you… Download the task out of it
Avid Android User Shows Some Major Love For WP7
Its not everyday that an Android-centric editor writes an article talking about WP7 but it seems today is that day. Garett Rogers, who is a contributor for ZDNet wrote an article talking about his first experience with a Samsung WP7 device (most likely the on above) and he had nothing but good things to say about it.
He says his experience with the device was pleasant and pretty much restates what ever other writer has said before:
“The phone is really fast, and everything feels consistent from app to app. The “metro” style is also very refreshing — it’s heavy on typography and flat UI elements.”
Considering that he is an Android user I take this next quote as a pretty big deal:
“I’m not saying that Android is unbearably slow, but compared to Froyo, WP7 takes the cake.”
At the end of the day it seems everyone that experiences Windows Phone 7 always comes away happy (even Gizmodo surprisingly) regardless of these missing pieces some blogs are making sound like big deals.

QWVGA Dialer Skin available
I would really hate having a WQVGA device, mainly because it does not get any or minimal development but the XDAblog seems to have found something. The theme changes the design of the least used application of a WQVGA device, the phone app.
I cannot say much about it, but here is some info provided.
Specifications:
- Support only 2G “no video calling”
- Patched to use .png images instead of .bmp > Saved a lot of space
- Don’t consume device memory
- Contains smartdial and redial functions “thanks to signal34 and thormdac”
- Large icons
Upcoming Reviews
With Windows Phone 7 just around the corner for most, I thought I should get on a few more reviews for you guys and so that is what I shall do. Coming up soon, I have some new media focused reviews. Products like Beats by Dr. Dre and Monster headphones, because with WP7’s focus on media(Zune hub)… We all need a good pair of headphones, and these pairs even offer media control buttons and a call answer button.
I will also try and get a few comparisons for the 6.5 users that are looking for a 32GB Micro SDHC solution… And are not sure of were to go (Sandisk, TopRam, etc.).
If there is any other reviews you would like to see before WP7 is out, please let us know and I will work on it. Otherwise I will keep looking and reviewing to the best of my ability.
Standalone Remote Control App Brings The Battle To GRemote
For those who are not aware of GRemote, it basically allows one to control your computers using basic gestures from your phone. This WP7 client will allow users to do just that on the new OS. The software was posted over at 1800PPC, and it’s a standalone application that allows one to simple control your computers mouse wirelessly with your phone. The application developer Praethin did not include any video but I am sure you can figure out how it would work.
I love GRemote and hope they create a WP7 client as well, but for now this application deserves an uncontested place on my HD7 from T-mobile.
