Bloomberg – Microsoft “plans to unveil its new mobile-phone operating system next month” says tipster

Contrary to the rumours started by unknown website Brighter Side of News an anonymous tipster, “familiar with the matter” has revealed that Microsoft intends to show of Windows Mobile in February after all.

The tipster did not identify Mobile World Congress, but this is the most likely venue for such an unveiling.

Debbie Anderson, a spokeswoman for Redmond, Washington- based Microsoft, declined to comment on the timing of an announcement. “We’re always working on future versions and have nothing new to announce,” she said.

I think they are, that's what all the hints are. They can't affored not to either and just talk about 6.6 at MWC.

Besides, it wouldn't surprise me if this "source" that talked to bloomberg wasn't told to do so from Ballmer himself! Gotta get the free PR ball rolling by hitting up the news sites.

i reckon they will announce wm7 and wm6.6. wm7 coming at the end of 2010 and wm6.6 coming straight away. also i think they will keep selling wm6.6 to lower end device that dont meet the minimum spec of wm7, till all new phones have high enough spec for wm7 as standard then they will kill wm6.6.

That sounds right to me. I'd have to agree. WM6.x phones aren't going to die once WM7 is here. Well, not right away anyways.

There will always bee a market for low end devices and these low end devices aren't going to be meeting the WM7 requirements for at least a year. this means that 6.6 will have an important role to play for quite a while. I'm kind of surprised they haven't made a version of WM7 for lower end devices though. they may just be keeping quiet on it though. if they are keeping quiet about a WM7 lite though then why are they making 6.6? I guess all will be revealed soon enough.

It could just be as an update to current and older phones that are getting 6.5 now or just got it. Leaving WM7 for only newer ones, or the very top end if the HD2 gets it.

That could just mean that they’re keeping their bases covered incase something goes wrong and they run into some sorta bug. Best to leave things open with something totally new like WM7 is suppose to be.

This many, obviously strategic leaks to hype a product that nobody has seen yet is kind of unusual for Microsoft. They normally show demos of the product prior to its new UI, and then they show the UI. It is unheard of for them to have something new and entirely different that nobody has seen 1 month prior to unveiling.

I would normally assume this means there isn't that much of a difference, but with the way MS staff have been hyping the product, and setting expectations, I don't see how it could not be a game changer. I wouldn't doubt it at all if they are underpromising delivery, and that it launches much sooner than we think (sooner than Dec 2010 at least)

Well, even 6.5.3 or 6.6 as it seems to be known now would still be a new version, would it not?

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for February, but this is just more useless ambiguous information. New version might mean 6.6 or it might mean 7, even a 0.1 upgrade is still a new version, especially since Microsoft unlike say Palm or Apple don't push out their incremental updates to everyone automatically.
