Brain Training Game for Xbox Kinect

The Xbox Kinect controller will be Microsoft’s major hardware/platform release other than Windows Phone 7 this holiday. Just like the latter, critics have lambasted the effort as copy of the Wii motion gaming capabilities and inferior to the PlayStation Move due the lack of physical controllers. It is also amazing to hear people bemoan the fact that most Kinect games shown so far force you to move around as you play the games (which the Wii also does) The video embedded above (which is unfortunately all in Japanese so if you know the language, please feel free to translate it for us) is called Karada de Kotareu Atarashii Nou-tore, or "Respond With your Body: New Brain Training,"  The game looks like it will be a lot of fun for the whole family with the added bonus of actual learning in the process.

From the website andriasang.com the source of the video

Professor Ryuta Kawashima is going HD for hits next title. And he’s doing away with the stylus too.

The neuroscientist who became a video game celebrity due to his contributing role in Nintendo’s multi million selling Brain Age games has most recently leant his talents to Namco Bandai for an all new Kinect brain training game.

Unveiled today at Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Media Briefing 2010 press conference, Karada de Kotareu Atarashii Nou-tore, or "Respond With your Body: New Brain Training," is a new type of brain training game where you train your brain through the use of your body.

Similar to other brain training games, the program determines your brain’s age as you solve problems in such areas as math, judgment and memory. This time, the problems, playable by between 1 and 4 players, are solved through body motions.

The fact that Namco is making a game for Microsoft gives me hope that maybe the popular Brain Age game, or a  similar product might also make it into the windows Phone 7 catalog.

PS3 Move is far superior to Kinect for all but the most casual gamer.

Kinect is a fantastic idea, and I'd love to have a go on it. However the current technical limitations, including severe lag and lack of accuracy, make it fairly useless for serious gamers.

Hopefully version 2 will fix these issues and be everything I'd hoped Kinect would be, but for now PS3 is less cool but more useful.

I've been seriously thinking of getting a console, and the differences between Kinect and Move are the main driving force pushing me towards the PS3. I'm in no rush though, so I'll wait to see what Move games are released as they're think on the ground at the mo.

The integration with WP7 would push me towards the XBox, except that it seem unlikely that I'll be getting a WP7 phone, at least for a year or so.

The latest reviews of the hardware/software for kinect indicate that the lag and accuracy issues is a software/developer problem. I'm more interested in the different experiences that kinect could bring rather than playing the same games with a different controller scheme.

That's neat, but too bad "brain training" games haven't been shown to actually improve intelligence.

Flash cards don't make you more intelligent either. But they are helpful tools to help students memorize things. Anything to make that funner to help your kids learn addition and times tables is great.
